“Mildly disappointing”
Reviewed 23 April 2014

My husband and I spent a long weekend here in April. This is a boutique hotel with a modern decor, the rooms are very much Ikea-meets-eco-warrior. They're not big, and seem a bit cluttered, given that they've tried to squeeze a bench, large table and chair in along the king-size bed, but I've experienced worse. The room seemed thoughtfully designed, with plenty of closet space, a safe large enough to fit my clunky laptop, loads of power outlets, and the coolest mini bar I've ever seen (it comes with a cocktail shaker ...). The bed is very soft, not my cup of tea, but then many people like that. The bathroom is also on the small side, and this is where my problems started: there is a window between the wall of the shower (wave!) and the bedroom. Leaving aside people who may be sharing a room without being a couple, my husband and I do like to give each other some privacy in the bathroom. I mentioned the issue to the front desk, and I will say that they reacted immediately - there was someone in our room to deal with it less than 10 minutes later. However their fix was to cover the window with a couple of hand towels and duct tape. Not so attractive (see photo). It looks as though there may have been a shade above the window at some point, but it certainly wasn't there in our room. I also ran into an issue that is a pet peeve of mine: here's an eco-friendly hotel that very much encourages you to re-use your towels. But are there enough towel racks or hooks to hang them up? Nope.
The lobby and pool areas of the hotel were really nice, and at first glance there certainly seemed to be enough lounging space. However (and our trip did coincide with spring break, maybe making the hotel busier than usual), we weren't able to secure loungers at the pool or on the beach on any of the three days we were there, because there just wasn't enough space for the size hotel. Also, they make you pay for umbrellas, both at the pool and the beach.
Maid service was somewhat spotty. On the first day, our room was never serviced. We did spend some time in it here and there, but I think there was plenty of time for service otherwise. The other two days, maid service was so late we were considering calling down to ensure the room was cleaned. On both days, they forgot to replenish the body lotion, which I then had to call for. Having said that, I really did like the toiletries. There are three large bottles of shampoo, conditioner and bath gel mounted on the wall in the shower. The shampoo and bath gel have some zing to them - there weren't any ingredients on the bottles, but I'm guessing tea tree oil.
What I did like is that this hotel doesn't nickel and dime you over every amenity like some others: there are bikes that you can rent for free, two hours at a time, internet throughout the hotel is free (although didn't work very well), and I've heard pool service provides you with water and fruit free of charge. There's a bottle of water in the room that is replenished daily.
Staff overall were friendly. We didn't try any of the onsite restaurants, but certainly had no issues with the front desk staff or concierge, though they probably could have done with some extra support that weekend, given that the hotel was obviously fully booked.

Room Tip: Every other room has a balcony. They're very small, but if you're interested in one, check t...

We spent a night at the James Royal Palm after a good experience last July and ... what a total disappointment! The service staff at the front desk were extremely rude and unapologetic despite the hotel's errors with our check in and check out. At check in, the front desk staff did not have our reservation despite booking two days earlier. We were held up for an hour at the front desk only to basically have to check ourselves in, I have never experienced something like this and not even an apology. The hotel and beach club remain the same, but now on top of the resort fee the umbrellas are extra. No big deal. We ordered a bottle of wine for the beach and the server realized it was my travel companion's birthday. He "brought a surprise" which we did not ask for. While it turned out to be a slice of cake that melted before it arrived, the real surprise was the bill upon check out. The hotel attempted to charge us for a prepaid room and charged us for the cake the server "surprised" my companion with. The server also included a 18% gratuity for himself on top of the whole thing which resulted in him having a 40% tip since we tipped him separately before seeing the room charges. Nice huh? I find this type of expectation and behaviour dishonest on the part of the hotel. When we came to settle the bill, the woman at front desk was rude and frankly indifferent to the fact that (a) the hotel attempted to charge us twice for the room, (b) included nonexistent room service charges, (c) we were charged for something we did not ask for and (d) we were inconvenienced at check in and check out by the hassle and time spent away from the beach for which we had to pay an additional 41$ to access. She did not apologize once and was surprised when we asked for an itemized list of charges when the charges should have been $100 and not an opaque $400. Perhaps the $300 was a James Royal Palm "convenience" fee? Or maybe a surcharge to send front desk staff to Customer Service 101? Will not be staying here again after this indignant, frankly unprofessional service. There are plenty of better hotels at this price point to choose from which clearly will not take advantage of their guests. Check your bills when staying here.

Fantastic location, relaxed yet hip vibe, tasty cocktails all located right on the beach. Loved sitting by the pool and playing in the pool with our son (he's four), and walking out to the well furnished and staffed beach.

Excellent South Beach location - walked everywhere. Hotel is a historical landmark with a modern edge. Staff and amenities were excellent. My husband and I enjoyed the comfortable, fresh decor. Room was calming and inviting. Linens, towels, amenities, service were all excellent.

We stayed here for a short break Easter 2014 to escape the winter. We had a great time. The location is good right in the middle of Miami beach - a short walk from ocean drive and the Lincoln street area. it is also just around the corner from Espanola street with the restaurants. We found the hotel very nice from start to finish. We had a seaview room with an amazing view of the beach and were able to sleep with the window open at night listening to the ocean. The pool area was very welcoming. The staff were all friendly and helpful.

Excellent location, hotel and beach. Double bed too narrow for two but otherwise just great and comfortable. We stayed in Deluxe room with sea view. (I believe all Deluxe rooms have partly sea view and bigger/expensive room have only whole sea view)
