“I only I'd known there'd be a club downstairs and lazy accusatory staff”
Reviewed 23 May 2011

AVOID THIS PLACE!! I should have noticed there was a problem right when we checked in. The staff was lazy and the desk clerks were not very helpful or friendly. When we checked in, we found out we'd be placed at the hotel next door. The room was comfortable but the shower was gross. The walls were paper thin and we could hear people (particularly loud young girls) coming and going and the conversation of the gossipy maids in the rooms next door. An hour later a heavy base and loud music in the bar/restaurant started below us--it was so loud that the wine glasses on the shelf were moving and vibrating. And it did not stop until 4 am despite calls to the front desk, promises from the staff that it would end at 2am and that they would have the base lowered, and us finally showing up with our bags packed ready to leave. When we showed up the desk clerk blamed us, saying we "should have known it was going to be loud, you're in South Beach," but we were never informed of the music situation upon checking in and I don't think guests should be treated this way when you pay over $200 per night. Finally we asked for the manager who still refused to move our room since they were supposedly full and if we wanted to check out they refused to refund us. The most they offered us was very insulting--a 25 dollar gift certificate to the noisy restaurant below the room. For the price we paid for the room and all the hassle it really didn't make up for the poor service. We were given a new more comfortable and more quiet room the next afternoon, after the front desk called us on a cell and said we better get back to the hotel immediately if we wanted to be moved, then told us to get our stuff out of the original room but locked us out with our stuff inside. It was really more hassle and too little too late. Plus the new room didn't have much privacy, and looked directly into another guest's windows if you didn't keep the curtains fully closed 24/7 This was a horrible stressful experience when we were already tired from traveling. The staff seemed to assume that because we were young (mid-20s), we didn't need sleep or quiet but they gave an older couple in front of us at check-in a nicer room in the actual Catalina hotel. HORRENDOUS SERVICE AND OVERPRICED, NOT RECOMMENDED.

Music is blasting all the way through the morning (5am), room service is horrible. Do yourself a favor and dont go here. We checked out early and would never go back. I want a refund for my hard earned money.

This hotel was very clean and modern, room was quiet and comfortable. The bars and restaurants downstairs were very lively and the food was great. The beach was right across the street, they have their own area for guests with chairs and umbrellas. The pool was very clean! Everything is within walking distance, shopping, clubs, etc. I would recommend this hotel to anyone whether you are going to Miami for fun or for a family vacation. I will def be staying here again!

i stayed at the hotel and the restaurant was under staffed so i had to walk to the counter to get a waiter so i could order then a spanish waiter was sent over who understood nothing we ordered so i had to wait for someone else to come take my order....... the free shuttle was terrible he came 30 minutes late to pick me up from the airport and days later going back to the airport he was 30 minutes late and everyone at the hotel leaving that day almost missed their flight so we called a cab......my jewelry was stolen out of my bag the last day when the hotel held my bag until the shuttle came later that day and the manager has contacted me one time since then just asking for a description of my jewelry never recieved an email from her since which is absolutly ridiculous.......worst hotel stay in my entire life

Our girlfriends surprised a friend for her birthday with a trip to South Beach! We all stayed at the Catalina, which turned out to be perfect in so many ways! Their 2 pools, close proximity from the beach, restaurants, clubs an bars made it the perfect place to stay with our group of friends. Its also a quick walk to Lincoln Road Mall, with all their great places to eat, drink and shop. Nicole was wonderful in arranging our rooms as well as suggesting venues for our evening rendevous!

I recently had the lovely chance to stay at the Catalina Hotel in Miami Beach for 3 nights, and was soooo pleased w/ my stay. Great customer service, trendy, clean, boutique, great roof top pool, and great mini bars in the room! It was a poppin' place and I'd most definitely stay there again in the future.

Room Tip: Don't forget to check out the roof top pool!

First and foremost...don't let the title of this review put you off. As you will see from my other reviews, i am not unnecessarily critical...just honest.

Catalina South Beach - as it's new website now calls itself - is three hotels all next door to each other. Hotel Catalina, straddled by The Dorset (Home of the Kung Fu Kitchen) and Maxine's, which also hosts the restaurant of the same name. All three hotels are vastly different, which is a difficult proposition to get right. (Almost like enticing people into an Indian themed restaurant, only to serve them a roast dinner!) I only hope the empty, under-refurbishment hotel next to Maxine's is not going to be the fourth in the series!!!

Check in for whichever hotel you are placed in, is handled centrally, by The Catalina. It's pot luck as to which staff member will look after you here, and they range from quite pleasant and amiable, to downright rude and cr@p at their jobs. Room upgrades are easy to come by with the price for doing so, very much open for 'haggling'. We upgraded from a standard "On a budget" room to "classic comfort"...and having originally been offered this at $100 per night...we managed to agree on $25 per night for four nights.

We suffered quite a protracted check-in due to the upgrade, and a lack of communication between housekeeping and front desk, followed by the "cr@p at their job" variant of front-desker, clocking off halfway through. We then had to cart our suitcases back outside, down the street, and into the "Maxine" hotel through the restaurant and bar, to finally get access to our room.

The room (307) was good, funky looking and well worth the cost of the upgrade. We had a wet room, and even a walk in closet - although this was very gloomy even with the mock chandelier. The "pool view" was a only achieved when the wind blew sufficiently enough to move the large bush covering the window, to allow us a view of the very nearest square foot of the pool closest to us. (The pool view - or lack thereof - wasn't an issue, just be wary of your expectations when checking in. The woman would have had us believe we were in an underwater room, the view of the pool was that great!)

We ate at both Maxine's and Kung Fu Kitchen...both were very good and reasonably priced for the location, service was good as well. We took advantage of the "free cocktails" for hotel residents in Maxine's a couple of nights from 7-8pm, which was a nice touch. Basic spirits and mixers is your limit...but it's free and the bar staff are friendly.

This brings me to a notable stand out from the stay at Catalina. Camillo. Camillo can often be found from around 5pm in Maxine's bar, with a mohawk hair cut and outgoing, friendly demeanour. He introduced himself as the manager of the place and couldnt do enough to help, and offer dinner / bar recommendations locally as well as just being a chirpy, friendly bloke. It was evident that any staff member that works in his presence was vastly different to those elsewhere... Shame The South Beach Group can't get a hotel full of him and his type...as it would change the attitude of the place exponentially.

Although we didnt use them, the pools looked okay, and the free towels and loungers on the beach is a nice touch - which we used every day. The hotel is in a good location, which feels safe to walk around at night...and is literally 3 mins walk to the beach.

Overall, it's a decent place. Good food and drink, interesting and varied decor - all well maintained, and in a great location. A few staff experiences left a lot to be desired but that's life.

PS: The best food we ate in Miami was at YUCA. (Young Urban Cuban American) Which is a posh looking place on Lincoln Road a few blocks from the hotel. Nice staff, reasonably priced and delicious food, excellently presented. Can not recommend this place highly enough.

Room Tip: Haggle the price of a decent upgrade for sure!
