“Very Disappointed in My Stay Here”
Reviewed 24 May 2011

my boyfriend and I booked this hotel for our long weekend getaway. We were so disappointed in our stay here that we checked out a day early and went to a different hotel. This hotel seems to be more concerned about the patrons of their restaurant and bar than they do about their hotel guests. It is a pretty cool atmosphere if you want an all day and all night party. We stayed on the top floor (4th floor) and we're able to hear the music from the bar at 430am. And we didn't just hear the beat, we heard the lyrics and all. All night, each night, we heard the entire party from the bar. We didn't get any sleep. Also, room service never came. Before we left on our third day room service did come, but only to check the wet bar and give us a bill for a missing snack. They didnt clean or give us new towels or anything. The pool was ehh, i was not impressed. I have a pool in my building at home that is much nicer.

We had even upgraded our room to the "penthouse" for a very good price, and we were barely able to fit (2 people, two rolling suitcases) It was very tight. I can't imagine what would have happened if we didn't upgrade. The room had some cool accents to it, but overall it was dark and small. That staff wasn't very friendly or helpful. Overall, I would only recommend this to someone who is looking for a 24hr party. I thought hotels are supposed to be peaceful - this was the opposite.

I stayed at the Catalina from 21 March - 28 March with my boyfriend. We were in town for Ultra Music festival and looking to cram in a few other bits along with catching some much needed rays!

As you can see from the title of my review I wouldn't not stay at the Catalina again as we felt the cons far out weigh the pros.

The hotel IS in a great location. Just over the road from the beach and close to the restaurants, shops, bars and clubs.

The roof top pool is a nice area and there was an older guy up there serving (I think he started during our stay) who was great, very helpful and even brought us over drinks of water (which is free) in between our cocktails (which were VERY pricey!).

It was great to have free loungers and towels round the pool and at the beach and the free beach bag was a nice touch.

Now for the not so good:

The hallways to the room are dark and feel like something out of a horror movie! They smell musty and there is dark carpet on the floor and grey walls with very little lighting. I think these could easily be improved with a lick of cream paint on the walls and some extra lighting.

We were staying at The Dorset part of the hotel. We had to change our room twice. The lock on the safe in the first room was broken so after a maintenance guy failing to fix it we asked to be moved. We stayed one night in the next room (which was much smaller than the first). It was right next to a water tank which was really loud. We were put in a third room on the afternoon of our second day. This room was better, it was on the next floor up (3rd) and the windows looked out on to the strip in front of the hotel. However, it wasn't perfect. The windows were filthy and there was hair and dust on the floor but by this time we just wanted to get on with enjoying our holiday and it was the best of a bad bunch.

Throughout our week in Miami our room key would not work. This was really frustrating for us. Getting all the way up to room only to find that it wasn't working and then having to go over to the Catalina building to get it fixed. Of the numerous times I went over to have this problem rectified the staff did not once apologise.

We ate in the Maxine restaurant twice. Once for dinner (before heading over to Liv nightclub at the Fontainebleu, a real must!) and once for breakfast. We found the food at dinner below average but the serivice OK but the food at breakfast was nice however the service was terrible! So very hit and miss!

Others have complained about the music coming from the bar/restaurant downstairs. This wasn't an issue for us as we were out till late most nights and we like house music however if you are thinking of having a few early nights or house music (it is even played at breakfast) is not your bag I would suggest this is not the hotel for you. On saying that, our stay was during a music festival and spring break so thing may be quieter at other times of the year. During our stay most if not all hotels had some kind of parties going on.

We booked this hotel as we thought it was a good price and looked an ideal location for getting around Miami, however next time I would pay a little more and get something better.

A few tips for holidaying in Miami:

If you are looking for a great, upmarket steakhouse AVOID Meat Market.! My steak was tough and flavourless! Try Prime112 instead.

If you are looking for a few chilled drinks get glammed up and try the pool bar at the Delano. Nice setting and you can pretend you are staying there (if only for a bit!).

We had great meals at Joes Stone Crabs and the Beer and Burger Joint so would recommend both.

Breakfast is good at both News Cafe and Front Porch cafe.

Drinks at Wet Willies are AMAZING!

If you are English rent a car and go to Sawgrass Mills shopping mall. Lots of great buys to be had especially if you are into brands like Ralph Lauren etc.

You must see the Everglades. We rented a car and went to the Everglades in the morning and Sawgrass Mills in the afternoon. We took an airboat ride and then did the tram tour at Shark Valley (which was brilliant). If you only have time for one, either the tram tour or an airboat ride, go for the tram ride - it is much more interesting and you will see a lot more (including gators up close).

We had a great night in Liv nightclub seeing a Steve Angello set and would recommend the club.

Make sure you are in town for Ultra music fest if you are a house head, it was a lot of fun!

Overall a brilliant holiday but we won't be returning to The Catalina.

Room Tip: Ask to be on a high floor in Dorset Block

AVOID THIS PLACE!! I should have noticed there was a problem right when we checked in. The staff was lazy and the desk clerks were not very helpful or friendly. When we checked in, we found out we'd be placed at the hotel next door. The room was comfortable but the shower was gross. The walls were paper thin and we could hear people (particularly loud young girls) coming and going and the conversation of the gossipy maids in the rooms next door. An hour later a heavy base and loud music in the bar/restaurant started below us--it was so loud that the wine glasses on the shelf were moving and vibrating. And it did not stop until 4 am despite calls to the front desk, promises from the staff that it would end at 2am and that they would have the base lowered, and us finally showing up with our bags packed ready to leave. When we showed up the desk clerk blamed us, saying we "should have known it was going to be loud, you're in South Beach," but we were never informed of the music situation upon checking in and I don't think guests should be treated this way when you pay over $200 per night. Finally we asked for the manager who still refused to move our room since they were supposedly full and if we wanted to check out they refused to refund us. The most they offered us was very insulting--a 25 dollar gift certificate to the noisy restaurant below the room. For the price we paid for the room and all the hassle it really didn't make up for the poor service. We were given a new more comfortable and more quiet room the next afternoon, after the front desk called us on a cell and said we better get back to the hotel immediately if we wanted to be moved, then told us to get our stuff out of the original room but locked us out with our stuff inside. It was really more hassle and too little too late. Plus the new room didn't have much privacy, and looked directly into another guest's windows if you didn't keep the curtains fully closed 24/7 This was a horrible stressful experience when we were already tired from traveling. The staff seemed to assume that because we were young (mid-20s), we didn't need sleep or quiet but they gave an older couple in front of us at check-in a nicer room in the actual Catalina hotel. HORRENDOUS SERVICE AND OVERPRICED, NOT RECOMMENDED.

Music is blasting all the way through the morning (5am), room service is horrible. Do yourself a favor and dont go here. We checked out early and would never go back. I want a refund for my hard earned money.

This hotel was very clean and modern, room was quiet and comfortable. The bars and restaurants downstairs were very lively and the food was great. The beach was right across the street, they have their own area for guests with chairs and umbrellas. The pool was very clean! Everything is within walking distance, shopping, clubs, etc. I would recommend this hotel to anyone whether you are going to Miami for fun or for a family vacation. I will def be staying here again!

Our girlfriends surprised a friend for her birthday with a trip to South Beach! We all stayed at the Catalina, which turned out to be perfect in so many ways! Their 2 pools, close proximity from the beach, restaurants, clubs an bars made it the perfect place to stay with our group of friends. Its also a quick walk to Lincoln Road Mall, with all their great places to eat, drink and shop. Nicole was wonderful in arranging our rooms as well as suggesting venues for our evening rendevous!
