Since I am the type of person who likes to know what I am getting into (especially when traveling away from home) I will describe my entire trip. For those not interested, I will talk about the Hotel Indigo Miami Lakes first...then continue.
My girlfriend and I fly into Ft Lauderdale International and drove to Hotel Indigo Miami Lakes, which was about a 30 minute trip with traffic. We got our hotel through Priceline.com after much searching and deliberation. We were very happy with our choice.
The hotel was small, sitting next to the Don Shula golf course and steak house. The front desk staff checked us in immediately (even though we arrived at 12 PM.) We stayed in room 3124 and had a great view overlooking the pool. The room was large enough to not feel cramped and they look exactly like the pictures on the website. We stayed for an entire week in the same room (except for one night when we stayed in Key West at the Hyatt.) There was plenty of room at the pool (two other people were at the pool one day...other than that it was empty.) We were aware of a few other couples/families staying at the hotel, but for the most part it seemed empty...which was fine by us. The hotel staff was very friendly and helped us anyway they could, be it directions or a plastic knife to cut limes. Overall we were very pleased with the hotel and would stay there again in a heartbeat!
Short travel guide outlining places we went and ate:
Cancun Grille - 3 minute trip from Hotel Indigo.
*Authentic Mexican cuisine and good drinks. $70 for two meals and drinks.
Miami Beach (South Beach) - 35 minute trip from Hotel Indigo
*Ocean Drive: 5th St - 11th St (Topless areas) 13th St - 15th ("Gay Beach")
*Jerry's Famous Deli: apparently a South Beach stop...not worth stopping...VERY expensive.
*Street Parking was $1.25 hr/4 hour maximum. Garage parking $1 hr/10 max.
Key West - 3.5 hour trip from Hotel Indigo
*Beautiful drive down Route 1 South.
*Stayed at the Hyatt (Priceline: $100 plus $20 resort fee...GREAT for a hotel room that normally costs $350 - 500!) The room was nice and clean with a huge bathroom and shower. The pool was VERY busy the day we were there; it was a small pool and very little seating.
*Key West Lighthouse: $10 pp and definitely worth the climb for the panoramic view.
*Sloppy Joe's: bar fare and great mixed drinks (pride themselves on "an extra pour")
*Captain Tony's: original Sloppy Joe's. Just drinks and business cards stapled everywhere!
*Willie T's: Great drinks. Feel free to write on a dollar bill and staple it somewhere.
*Mallory Square: view the sunset with the rest of the town. Worth it at least once. Entertainers and vendors. Great pictures at the far left of the boardwalk.
*Margharitaville: more great drinks and interesting clientele.
*Yellow Giraffe: stop in for Key Lime Pie.
*Mile Marker Zero for Route One North and South: found at Front St. and Whitehead St.
Bahia Honda State Park:
*Best part of our whole trip! Consistently ranked in the top 10 beaches in the country. Totally, totally worth the trip!
*Shallow, crystal clear water (ankle/knee deep) for at least 100 yards out.
*$4.50 pp (goes down slightly the more people you have) or $20 for a car load of 8.
*Great for swimming, shell collecting, and relaxing.
Everglades National Park:
*Royal Palm Visitors Center near Homestead, FL. about 45 minutes South West.
*Various boardwalks through different areas of the park.
*An hour trip to Flamingo, FL through the park. There is gas/food/bathrooms at the visitor's center.
*Lots of birds, lizards, LARGE grasshoppers, and mosquitoes!
*BRING YOUR BUG REPELLENT!!!! I REPEAT: BRING IT, USE IT, LOVE IT!
Over all the trip was a ton of fun. Get out and experience as much as you can. A little driving off the main path will help you find some wonderful things.
