“Home cooked meals!”
Reviewed 22 August 2008

I love the Pearl Country Store Bar-B-Q. Whenever I travel to Micanopy it's such a treat to get a real, home-cooked meal. The folks there are so nice and accommodating. Hard to find "Old Florida" these days - the Pearl does a great job making that still happen. You have to try the chicken and the incredible home-made pies!

“This Place has it All!”
Reviewed 22 August 2008

We were visiting recently in the Gainesville area and happened on to Pearl's. It's a fantastic place to check your email with its free wi-fi. The place fills up fast with hungry locals looking for great coffee and a hearty breakfast or lunch or to take out dinner that includes huge slabs of barbeque ribs. But that is just for starters. It has a really good selection of books by area writiers and other treats like locally made jellies and preserves and even a limited supply of fruit and vegetables. There is a whole store to explore and they sell gasoline as well. We were very pleased and plan to come back again and again.

“Real Florida”
Reviewed 18 August 2008

Pearl is one of my favorite places for good food at reasonable prices.

Yes, it shares a building with the "convenience" store, and yes there is a gas station out front. Uhmmm, that's why they call it "Pearl COUNTRY STORE" and not Pearl Restaurant. The store really has very few "convenience" items, and a lot of locally made products and regional-topic books and gifts.

Actually, the restaurant part of it is located in the back corner and not in the middle of the store as suggested by the first reviewer. I was just there today and saw at least six tables, plus some counter stools where you can watch them do their thing.

The pulled pork was pulled by hand for MY sandwich. The fried okra was great, too. I've had chicken or ribs on other occasions and it is always dripping with sauce and falling-off-the-bone delicious.

So if you want a Cracker Barrel, don't go. If you want the feel of a Real Florida country store, don't miss it. Pick up a free mini-bumper sticker when you pay for your meal. And be sure to say hello to the old man sitting on the bench out front.

Ignore that other review. How can you review a restaurant if you didn't eat the food? The BBQ at the Pearl is great - getting the pork is probably your best bet. They have a great sweet sauce and a good hot sauce as well. The breakfast is pretty good. The eating area has seating for around 20 people or so - it is not a formal sit-down restaurant, they do not have waiters or anything like that. The people there are very friendly, and the locals that hang out there are also. They do a great job of promoting lots of local things as well such as artists, authors, and they sell produce that is farmed locally. Truth is, the Pearl is very much an authentic southern-style restaurant.

“Hardly a restaurant”
Reviewed 10 February 2008

How does one hear of the Pearl County Store?

If you're on I-75 driving through north central Florida, you're bound to see the Billboards for Cafe Risque (a strip club), located in Micanopy, Florida at exit 374. If you're in the mood for food, however, you may also notice that the only dining establishment advertised as being at this exit is the Pearl County Store. (But be aware - it is a few miles away from the Interstate & difficult to find if you're unfamiliar with the area). But I digress. . . that's one way to hear of this so-called restaurant.

Another way you'd probably hear of this place is driving by it on 441.

Another way to hear of it is to see its quasi-commercial (read: paid programming advertisement) on one of the local Gainesville TV stations. This commercial makes it out to be a quaint mom-and-pop breakfast joint. This is how my wife and I heard of this place.

So, on a Saturday morning, we took a drive down 441 from Gainesville to Micanopy. We were excited at the prospect of dining in a mom & pop breakfast joint; from the commercial we'd seen for the place, we believed it would be a scaled down & authentic Cracker Barrel. We arrived there at peak breakfast time.

Much to our surprise, when we walked through the doors of the Pearl County Store, we found ourselves in a gas station style convenience store. We noticed the so-called dining area. It consisted of two or three booths. All around those booths people walked around, shopping & checking out. Very strange.

We didn't sit down and eat, so who knows, perhaps we missed out on the best meal of our lives. It was our mutual feeling that the 10-15 minute commercial about this place had completely misled us as to the establishment's character. Nowhere in the commercial was it mentioned that this was a convenience store with dining. If the commercial lied about that, we assumed it was probably lying about the quality of its food.

So, if you're driving I-75 and looking for somewhere to eat, I'd advise you let your stomach rumble until you reach Gainesville or Ocala. If you've just watched the commercial on the local Gainesville channel & think it'll be like the Cracker Barrel but more authentic, think again. And if you're driving 441 and want to grab a quick bite, be my guest. You'll either confirm my suspicions that the food would be as terrible as the place's atmosphere, or get to experience a delicious meal that I never will.
