Owner description: Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary is a 13,000 acre Preserve. The Sanctuary is open daily from 7-5:30 with last admission at 4:30 pm. Visitors will find a gentle, pristine wilderness that dates back more than 500 years. A 2.25 mile boardwalk meanders through pine flatwoods, wet prairie, around a marsh and finally into the largest old growth Bald Cypress forest in North America. These impressive trees, relatives of the redwood, tower 130 feet into the sky and have a girth of 25 feet. Their massive branches are draped with mosses, lichens, bromeliads and ferns. The forest is also home to alligators, otters, white-tailed deer and red-bellied turtles. A wide variety of wading birds, songbirds, raptors and the fabulous Painted Bunting can be seen throughout the year. Photo opportunities are available at every turn of the boardwalk trail.

What a neat place! The boardwalk was nearly 2.5 miles long, and had various types of habitats. We went in the summer, so there was not much wildlife out. Still, it was a nice walk, and I would definitely do it again.

I love this place, and I always take our guests to visit it. It is a little bit of real Florida very close to home. It is peaceful and beautiful and allows us to view wildlife in its own environment. The staff and volunteers are helpful and are happy to point out interesting sights. Also helpful are the many well-informed photographers and other visitors. When I see a number of people all looking in one direction, I usually ask what they're watching, then they point it out and explain it. I've learned a lot that way.

My family and I went to the CSS in late winter this year. It probably wasn't the best time to go as there was very little wildlife to be seen. There is a path to follow throughout the "swamp" and a nice elevated deck to avoid taking any of the "swamp" home with you in your car. We spent several hours looking around- seeing an alligator/crocodile or three and many different birds.

Even though this is in the middle of nowhere, all our family had a great three hours walking around the boardwalk. You cannot get closer to alligators and other wildlife, at one time one the alligators was actually under the boardwalk. Staffed mainly by volunteers this attraction is well worth supporting, but make sure that you take some water with you!

Been here 3 times and have enjoyed the experience every time. This is a fascinating area which is full of wildlife. As a photographer you will find this place a real treat. You need to take your time and walk through very slowly, around every turn you will come across birds, insects, plants and larger wildlife ( alligators, deer, raccoons etc). You need to be every quiet which unfortunately the Americans are not! This was the only drawback and I felt it a great shame to hear a child call out "this is boring, there is nothing to see". No wonder the whole family could be heard from at least 200 meters away.
