In the area of Hi-Rises, over run with Condo's and ridiculously priced hotels this was an incredible find. One story old Florida Style Motel, seems a rather harsh word to describe it. My unit was like stepping back in time. Full kitchen, living room, separate bedroom and bath, lots of closet space, and fully equipped kitchen. It was wonderful. A lot like stepping back in a time machine. The décor is very well maintained 50ish 60ish style. Henry, the owner will tell you all about the area and offered me great suggestions on where to eat and what to see while in town.

Bed slept well, coffee pot worked in the morning, the refrigerator had ice, and the AC wasn't some noisy clunk. Nothing pretentious, just a nice, clean, and very casual place to stay. Would recommend it to everyone who wants to be close to it all, without being in the middle of it all.

The owner is a delightful character and tries to provide guests with many amenities. Most guests stay for extended visits and are comfortable with the old kitchy furnishings and look of the 1950's style motel. The exterior and grounds are well kept. The ground is covered with gravel that gets tracked into your unit constantly if your shoes have ridges in the soles and nowadays whose doesn't? The owner provides beach chairs, towels, and umbrellas to take to the beach a short walk away. He even has tubes of bug repelent and sunscreen in case you don't have any. But there was no shampoo, conditioner, or lotion in the bathroom. I can understand that for those planning to stay for weeks or even months that wouldn’t be an issue but short term guests might expect there will be some. There was not. Nor was there a hair dryer. The rooms are very small and jammed with very dated furniture. The linens on our bed were very tired, to put it mildly and the bed lacked a headboard. The ceiling fan was caked with dirt on the blades. And the worst part is the musty smell in the units. The chest of drawers had such a musty smell that we didn't dare put our clothes in them lest our clothing acquire that musty smell. This forced us to work out of our suitcases. I was surprised at how many reviewers said the rooms were "immaculate". I think that statement is a real stretch. The cleanliness was inconsistent. With all that said. I think the Gondolier should be considered only if you think that the things I've mentioned won't bother you. It’s big on kitch and is walking distance to the beach but we shortened our visit and moved elsewhere. We paid a lower room rate where we moved and the accommodations were much nicer and there was a continental breakfast by the pool every morning. BUT.....you couldn't walk to the beach.....so if that's a priority you may be willing to overlook the shortcomings of the Gondolier.

One of the best kept secrets in Naples is The Gondolier Inn on 8th Avenue South. It is a taste of Old Florida in the heart of Olde Naples, and it's a pleasant walk to the beach, 5th Avenue (restaurants and shops), Cambier Park (band concerts and art shows), and the 3rd Street Historic District (Naples Pier, Saturday Farmer's Market, diverse restaurants and upscale shops and galleries). The Gondolier has been in business for over 50 years, and Henry, the present owner/proprietor, is the son of the original owner. Henry is a great guy, very affable and friendly; and as a native Neopolitan, knows everything there is to know about Naples. He's on location 24/7, and is ready to answer all your questions and meet all your needs.

The apartments range from studios to deluxe studios to one room bedrooms. They are not spacious, but they are cheerful, attractive, and comfortable. The windows and doors, front and back, have jalousies which bring light and air into the apartments, although there is also heat and air conditioning if you need them. There is original art on the walls, comfortable rugs on the floor, sturdy and fully functional kitchen equipment, plenty of dishes and glassware. There is attention to small details like paper towels in the towel rack, extra rolls of TP, sturdy bars of soap, dish washing detergent. The back yard is lovely, a green oasis surrounded by tropical shrubery and trees where you can while away an afternoon in dappled shade or bright sun, reading, napping, or just relaxing. There's also a gas grill and a picnic table. Internet service is provided, and the signal strong enough so you can pick it up anywhere in the apartment and even in the back yard. The dining table inside is large enough for you and your partner to spread out the morning paper to read as you eat breakfast. Right outside the front door is a good size bistro table and chairs where you can take that second cup of coffee (yes, there is a full size coffee maker) to plan the day's activities, or perhaps have a late afternoon cocktail or glass of wine before heading up to the beach to watch the sunset.

Incidentally, there is a sidewalk from the Inn all the way to Gulf Shore Blvd., so you aren't forced to walk in the roadway to get to the beach. As a bonus, the 8th Ave. S entrance to the beach is one of the nicest in Naples. A few steps up from the parking lot is a broad walkway and grassy area with several benches. If it's a windy day on the beach, you can set up your chairs on the grass and still see the Gulf without being sandblasted. Henry provides plenty of lawn chairs, beach chairs, chairs with shaded covers, and umbrellas, so there's no need to bring your own along. You can also borrow a cooler if you want to take along a cold drink or picnic to the beach.

The laundry room is well stocked with all manner of things you might need including fresh towels -- beach towels, large bath towels, hand towels, wash cloths, bath mats, and kitchen towels. Just bring in your used towels and help yourself. Henry also provides fresh sheets and pillowcases each week, so you don't have to spend your time and money washing sheets and towels. There is also a wide and eclectic selection of books, something for every reading taste.

One of best aspects about the Gondolier is what it doesn't have -- a back alley, so there's no early morning 4 AM delivery traffic or the sound of car doors slamming and engines starting at 5 AM from people heading off to work. It is peace and quiet, blissful and priceless.

In short, Henry cares about the comfort and happiness of his guests. He usually has his "No Vacancy" sign up in high season, but if you're flexible, you might find accomodations. If you do, you will be glad you did.

I found the Gondolier through this site, called the owner and left a message; Henry called me back within minutes. Though he prefers longer term rentals, he worked with me and put me in a vacant unit for a few days. Liked it so much I extended my stay.

What I liked has been mentioned in other reviews and is so true. Great location and reasonable (both rare in old Naples). Free assigned off street parking, immaculately clean, old Florida architecture and Henry himself. Fellow guests were great too. I could not understand how this immaculate time capsule had survived, until the owner/operator explained his family had built, owned and managed this place since day one.

Talking with the owner is well worth it; he's a local who loves to give you the inside scoop on his town and area. Thanks, Henry.

Room Tip: The rooms do vary, some are more like apartments, some are like motel rooms. Just talk to the owner and he'll work with you.

great location, short walk to beach and downtown & shopping. Very friendly owner operator. Rooms have retro look and are small. Made me feel like I was in Key west. Owner has beach chairs, umbrellas, books to borrow.

Room Tip: get room in back
