Planet Pizza is a family owned restaurant which has just opened in New Smyrna Beach. This restaurant is an offshoot of their very successful restaurant in Orlando. The family comes from Albania and are successful because of their work ethic, customer service and generosity.
The beachside restaurant is located on the main drag (3rd Avenue) in a small strip mall. Parking is adequate. The astro-themed restaurant is cheerfully painted and decorated with less than 10 tables. What is very distracting is the loudness of the music which should be toned down by half.
The pizzas are sold in 16 and 20 inch sizes...the 20 inch is a monster, but plenty of them went out the door by pick-up or by delivery. The phone was constantly ringing as word has already spread of the taste and quality of the food in the 3 weeks since their opening.
The diners ordered a White Pizza and a 1/2 Vegetarian and 1/2 Peppperoni Pizza in the 16 inch sizes. The restaurant also has soft drinks as well as bottled beer.
What struck the diners first was the quality of the ingredients, especially the cheese. The shredded mozzarella was of exceptional quality, not the usual cheap chain style. The white pizza featured fresh garlic, ricotta and mozzarella. Unfortunately, fresh mozzarella was not on the menu, which this writer prefers. The taste was great, but the crust was flimsy and not New York crisp. The half-n-half pie featured fresh vegetables and the pepperoni was not greasy. The crust was thin and crisp as it should be.
The owners wanted our feedback and wanted only the best for their customers. Prices are higher than the chain restaurants, as they should be for the exceptional quality of ingredients and the plentiful use of the toppings. Service was excellent.
Planet Pizza is for the lover of pizza who appreciate quality, freshness and attention to detail. Incidentally, a fun bit of originality: if one orders a 20 inch pizza to go, the plain white box will have a handmade drawing made by the owners and are individual to each customer. This restaurant is being reviewed by the writer for pizza only. Other selections such as chicken wings, calzones, gyros, subs and salads would be expected to be of equal quality and taste.
If you are looking for generic pizza, this restaurant is not for you, but if you are looking for individual and freshly prepared pizza and appreciate a better product, then Planet Pizza is for you and comes recommended by this writer.
