This was our 2nd visit to Normans. The first visit left us feeling somewhat indifferent. An interesting menu but an uncanny number of items were over seasoned which gave us the lingering thought of being over-priced for the quality. On our first visit - as well as the 2nd visit - service was exceptional, but the dining room seemed a bit stuffy.
I've a very immature palate when it comes to wine. Wine falls into one of three categories "dont like it", "its good" or "wow, its really good". After many years Ive come to learn that I can not tell the difference between a $10 bottle of wine - and a $100 bottle. On the first visit we were recommended to one of their least expensive bottles a $140 cab. It landed in the "wow, its really good category" A good bottle - but not at that price for these taste buds.
We decided this week to give Normans a 2nd chance - and are so glad we did.
We opted for the Prix Fix with wine pairing - leaving the smart decision making of wine & food pairings to those who know better. The meal was outstanding, the wine were all in the "wow, its really good category". At one point during the meal I became a bit sad ... it would take me hours and hours of cooking - and perhaps hundreds of dollars of ingredients to replicate just one of the delicate tastes in this meal (if I could even pull it off).
The food was great - not over seasoned this time. The wine was great.
HOWEVER .. Let me explain how this meal will become a permanent resident of my culinary memory.
Normans recently renovated and opened an outdoor dining patio that over looks a picturesque golf course and lake. The patio is one of the nicest al fresco venues in Orlando. The covered patio is protected from the elements with plastic curtains; and with ceiling fans in the summer and heaters during our so-called winters in Orlando. Though still a very warm 90 degrees at 5:30, a gentle breeze cooled things off nicely before the afternoon storms arrived from the east. Service was attentive and courteous - but dining outside, the service was lighthearted and personal .. you felt as though you were in tandom with your servers. They came to know out likes, our personalities. We got to know a bit about them and heard about what made them most proud about being affiliated with Normans. With a bit of wine, outstanding service and a great atmosphere the meal became not just great for food - but an experience of joy, happiness and happy experience. Though my wife has a compliment of pretty smiles - the one I saw on her last week was new - Happy, light-hearted blissfulness'nothing matters other than hear and now' smiles. Im smiling remembering that magical evening - thank you Normans!
(Ive got this idea - I will need to call Normans ... can we stop by just for dessert and after-dinner cocktails? Their desserts are freaky good)
