Attraction details
Owner description: The park has two ravines up to 120 feet deep with steep banks at 45 degree angles. Unlike common gullies, trenches or sinkholes caused by temporary flooding, the steephead ravine is a permanent feature with a spring-fed creek that never dries up, called Whitewater Branch. The underground water bubbling up cuts into the bank and carries the sand and soil downstream to the St. Johns River. Over thousands of years the ravine has widened and deepened to what you see today. In 1933, this ravine was transformed into a dramatic garden by the federal Works Progress Administration. Much of the original landscaping still exists as formal gardens and an extensive trail system. A 1.8-mile paved road winds around the ravine, offering motorists and bicyclists a view of the gardens. The Ravine Loop is closed to vehicle traffic one hour before sunset, but remains open for pedestrians, bicycles, and wheelchairs. The garden's peak flowering period is azalea season, late January to April. Numerous picnic sites, equipped with tables and grills, are available to visitors. The Roy E. Campbell Civic Center complex features a large covered pavilion, auditorium, and meeting rooms that are available for rent. Located in Palatka at 1600 Twigg Street.

“Great place for a picnic”
Reviewed 20 March 2014

Very nice facilities for short, picturesque hikes and picnics. The maps could be more detailed, but it was nice to wander around. Make sure to see the suspension bridge.

“Azalea Days, any day great to visit Ravine Gardens”
Reviewed 3 March 2014

Park Manager Mark Giblin, (with help of staff and volunteers) are succeeding in making Ravine Gardens a fun place to visit. I LOVE this State Park. You can hike (it has hills), picnic, exercise, or drive around the perimeter. They have a gazebo, a large picnic area with grills, suspension bridges, fountains, etc. They have parking outside the park, and you can walk in. Or you can drive in and park. On most days, you can drive in, and drive around. Yesterday was the exception. They had Azalea days. They had chairs on the lawn for you to wait, then you could tour the park in a wagon (covered or uncovered). I loved it because, it was easier to see, not having to drive!, This is one place in Florida to see a little elevation!. This is a natural ravine not a sink hole. I remember the last time I was here, the lady manning the gate was so friendly and helpful. And if this post is fresh...this is March 3, 2014. There is plenty of time to see the azaleas in the next two weeks. They have awesome displays inside. Sometimes there are craft fairs, etc and sometimes there is a garden shed open. If you have just a few minutes or several hours, you WILL have a great visit. My only regret is that I don't live closer. I stopped by on my way back from camping in Jacksonville. The park is its name Ravine Gardens. It is a treasure.

“Beautiful Gardens”
Reviewed 2 March 2014

First and foremost, the guard at the gate and the tour guide were extremely pleasant and very helpful. The made us feel that they appreciated our business.

The tour was well done and very informative and the gardens were absolutely beautiful. After the tour, we walked around to more closely enjoy the various places that had been pointed out
and that made the experience even greater.

I would strongly suggest that you make this part of your plans if you're in the area.

“Unique state park with gorgeous scenery”
Reviewed 18 February 2014

Although this park was a lot different than the photos appeared, and not exactly what I envisioned, it is a unique park worth visiting. Instead of a formal gardens, there is a 1.8 mile path that you can drive, walk or run along (we drove) that runs along the upper edge of the ravine. There are multiple pull-off spots to view the ravine and azaleas in bloom. There were several bridges and well-kept areas that were perfect for a walk through the ravine..
