“Quaint hotel in Palm Beach”
Reviewed 5 March 2014

We just returned from a long weekend visit to Palm Beach. The Colony is only 2 blocks away from Worth Avenue and a few blocks from the water, so it is a great location. Our room had been recently refurbished, and while small, it was adequate. The bathroom was very small with a walk in shower and no bath, so be sure to ask for a room with a bath if that is your preference. Water did spray onto the floor with each shower. The toiletries were by L'Occitane en Provence, a company I like, but the lemon verbena scent was reminiscent of furniture polish, so maybe a different scent would be preferable. Our room was not cleaned the first day and when we spoke to the housekeeper. she assured us it had been cleaned, even as we saw an unmade bed and towels on the floor. A call to the front desk resulted in a cleaned room.

Our rate included "The English Breakfast" or a $20 credit for another choice. The breakfast was good, but service was slow. The pool was small, but lovely, and meals could be taken around the pool, which was fun. We wanted to order a drink one afternoon about 4 and asked for a snack menu. The choices were a hot dog from the pool bar or dinner appetizers from the restaurant, all very heavy. Again, the service was very, very slow- 45 minutes for appetizers of shrimp cocktail and flat bread and there were only a handful of guests. There is a nightclub featuring old Broadway stars which contributed to the slow, old-fashioned feel of the hotel.

We had a rental car and used the valet service frequently. Though polite, the valet staff could not give us directions, something a valet should be prepared to do. The front desk could not help either, which was frustrating.

There was a sundries shop but is closed on Sundays, which was very inconvenient, but seemed to fit with this old-fashioned hotel.

We enjoyed our visit but would choose a different hotel in the future.

Betsy, thank you so much for your feed back.
I could not agree more regarding our location. Being 1/2 block away from Worth Avenue and just 1 block away from the beach, The Colony Hotel has the best location on the island of Palm Beach!
The hotel does not have a sundries shop, but we do have Cafe 155, which serves the local community. Cafe 155 is open Monday through Saturday, and it is the number one choice for breakfast or lunch, for those folks that want quality 'grab-n-go', or a quiet setting for their meal break or snack.
As per our cabaret, we do have quite a few Broadway stars joining us for week long engagements. A very intimate setting at the Royal Room Cabaret, allows our out of town guests and regulars to enjoy Tony, Grammy and Emmy award acts, along with a 5 star dinner experience. It does add to the old world charm, that is characteristic of The Colony Hotel!
Thanks again Betsy, please know that your feedback is very important to us, and we will implement the appropriate steps to make sure that our staff and levels of service are at the best that they can be.

Walk to great shopping on Worth Avenue, great restaurants, the ocean. The hotel has a small but lovely pool. The room had plenty of closet and drawer space. Bathroom was very dated and soaps and shampoos all scented like cheap dishwashing liquid. Definitely bring your own. Super comfortable beds with the most wonderfully soft linens. I asked the concierge about buying tickets to the Palm Beach Art and Antique show and he handed me 4 free passes.

I deducted two stars for the accumulated dirt and food under the bed I discovered when searching for a dropped earring. Very poor houskeeping.

We decided to stay @ the Colony based on the location. Worth Ave is literally around the corner & the beach is a block away. When we checked in the front desk agent acted like she was doing me a favor by checking me in. Not a smile, not a welcome, nothing. Usually the front desk agents welcome you & give you a rundown of the place. Not at this hotel, she gave me the room key & we were on our own. We checked into our 5th floor "newly renovated" room. What a joke! This is an older hotel & obviously the rooms are going to be smaller. I didn't have a problem with the size of the room as I did the room itself. If that was newly remodeled, I'd hate to see an older one...gross. They call it "Old Palm Beach Style" more like Golden Girl style circa 1985! The "new" shower flooded the floor every time we used it. The room also had a musty smell, thank God the window opened. The pool area was well maintained & had a relaxing atmosphere, it was so pleasant. The bartender in the "famous" Polo Lounge was absolutely horrible, no personality @ all. We sat up at the bar & were only served one time & he never bothered to ask if we'd like another drink. Besides my husband & I, there were only two other people @ the bar, he had no excuse for his lack of service. The friendliest people were the maintenance & the housekeeping staff! The other hotel guests were also quite friendly. Everyone was there to have a nice time & the hotel staff did nothing to ensure that! For $550.00 a night I expected far better service than you'd get from a Best Western. My opinion, the only reason why this hotel still exists is because of the location. Otherwise they have nothing else to offer. You can only ride the back of an historic reputation for so long, especially if your doing nothing to maintain that reputation. Next time we'll be trying The Breakers or The Brazilian Court.

I recall the lady and her comments quite well. The Colony was built in 1947 in the British Colonial style. Our 5th floor was totally rebuilt last summer, everything, including a totally new air conditioning system. Decor is by Carleton Varney of Dorothy Draper Co. (think the Greenbrier, Grand Hotel Mackinac Island, the White House).Colorful, lively look but we don't do "hip'. And, the shower does not flood, we checked immediately.

I had an awful experience dealing with The Colony while attempting to book a block of rooms for my wedding guests. The sales team generously offered their rooms at 20% over rates that were available online, and they were uncommunicative around the requisite contract - leaving my guests unable to book rooms. I had clearly communicated to The Colony that my guests would be calling to book rooms and they kindly decided not to advise their staff of our room block.

Here is an excerpt from my final communication with them:

I repeatedly had to chase you down regarding our proposed arrangement. This was infuriating. I am an incredibly busy man and do not have time to track down a person I'm slated to give $7,000 worth of business to. You also claimed to have sent me several email with the contract attached. Judging by the email XXXX forwarded, you did. However, I noticed the To: field was omitted, indicating to me you had incorrectly written down my email. While this was an honest mistake, you made no attempt to follow-up with me to ensure I had received the contract. This is especially infuriating as I had explicitly told you my guest would be calling to book their stay. All of this occurred after our in-person meeting at The Colony around Christmas where you told me, and I quote "we are all set" after I asked you if you needed any further information from me or required anything additional to secure our block of rooms for our guest - at no point indicating a contract needed to be executed. Additionally, imagine how embarrassed my fiance and I were when our own guests were finding 15%-20% cheaper prices on rooms via the web versus what we were able to solidify through a room block!

Ryan, as previously stated through e-mails, The Colony Hotel values your family's patronage of our Hotel, and will continue to do so. As usual, all friends and family members that are staying at our hotel over the wedding dates will experience our customary Colony hospitality.

This is the second time I've stayed at the Colony and I am always impressed by the quality of service. It's hard to single people out but the Front desk were most accommodating, the breakfast staff were charming and attentive, the coffee was top notch and the orange juice was freshly squeezed. The rooms were quiet and comfortable. I thought it was a nuisance that there was no ice machine on any of the floors, but the bar staff were only too happy to supply some to the room. I had to host a couple of business lunches and the food and service was nothing short of excellent.
I genuinely look forward to a return visit.

Although the hotel is old and the bath rooms are not contemporary, they have been somewhat updated. The hotel is a wonderful place to relax and be away from the hustle and bustle of a large hotel. The staff id so attentive to every detail, they bend over backwards to make you feel comfortable and cared for. love it!

Room Tip: try and get a room away from the elevators. You can hear them all night in room 333

We attended a dinner and cabaret featuring Michel Bell & Catherine Matejka the day after Thanksgiving. The dinner and service were excellent and the wine list was exceptional. The show was very good with a wide variety of music and Michel was great at telling little stories to introduce each song. I do think that the use of the microphone was not needed because of the size of the room and because of Michel's booming voice. I would definitely return to this venue for another show.
