The Microtel Inn & Suites in Palm Coast is not a place I would stay at in the future. The hotel's description of "newly renovated rooms" is inaccurate.
Driving up to the Microtel, the exterior looks fine, the parking lot in great condition. My in-laws had stayed at this hotel several years ago and enjoyed their stay, so my husband and I were optimistic that our experience would be similar. Unfortunately, it quickly became obvious that the hotel is tired and in need of a serious overhaul.
Walking through the front door, the reception area is basic and dated, except for the flat screen TV and "newer" (not marble or granite) check-in desk. We also noticed a slight odor upon entering the lobby, but dismissed it as being "the lobby". We were assigned our room and we were on our way to get settled.
The elevator ride to the 3rd floor was smooth, but it was obvious that the elevator walls and buttons have been abused and need to be cleaned. As soon as the doors opened to our destination, we were welcomed by a horrible smell. It smelled like musty carpet that had been deodorized. It was difficult to get away from it.
We entered our room and immediately noticed the high humidity in the room. We initially figured it was because the A/C needed to be adjusted in order to pull the humidity out, of which we dropped the temperature of the A/C to 68. We unpacked and got ready to leave. We didn't notice until after the fact that the tub faucet had a continuous leak.
Outside of the leaky faucet, the dark green carpet in the room felt "sticky". We also noticed an older model cloth-covered recliner. The bottom of the bathroom door was cracking and peeling. The overhead light fixtures had dead bugs, and the overhead bathroom light fixture was rusty. The "closet" was an old faux-panel pre-fab item without an iron or ironing board. The "dresser" drawers were old with the bottom of the drawers bubbling. The mirror in both the bathroom and the bedroom were obviously old. The light switches and outlets looked as though that hadn't been cleaned in years. I was afraid to touch them.
When we returned to the hotel later that evening, we noticed that the humidity level of our room had not changed, but we tried to make the best of it. The next morning, we woke up to damp bedding and clothes. My sinuses and chest were terribly congested and I was coughing. After showering and entering back into the room, I noticed that the room itself had a musty smell. We agreed that we couldn't stay in that room another night. It wasn't physically healthy. The combination of moisture and smell indicated that mold had to have been present in the room and elsewhere in the hotel.
We spoke with the front desk staff who understood our concerns and allowed us to move to another room down the hall. We were told that it was one of the newer renovated rooms. I'm wondering when the renovation took place - 10 years ago?
In the new room, it was cleaner and more acceptable. It didn't smell like the previous room. However, the cord on the hair dryer had what appeared to be either dried food or blood. Also, the toilet didn't flush very well and clogged, and the switches and electrical panels appeared to need a thorough cleaning.
What I can say that was positive about this hotel is this: the staff was very understanding and helpful. It must be difficult keeping a smile on one's face while working in a facility that is knowingly sub-par. I commend Drew from reception. I also commend Brandy, from Housekeeping, who was expeditious in bringing a dehumidifier to our room while we were packing it up to move.
The continental breakfast is just that. Three selections of dry cereal, a few selections of instant oatmeal, bread, bagels, muffins, juice and coffee.
It was nice that a coffee station was available at all hours.
After returning home and unpacking, we noticed that all of our clothes were damp and smelled musty, just like the room.
I have stayed at Microtel in the past, just not this location, and had a decent experience. It's unfortunate that this location is in such poor condition.
