My review will be split in two, Unit #1308 and its owner and then the building.
When booking this condo #1308 with the owner, Grace Baine, we should have known something was wrong when she told me the spare key was in the lock box on the door. Apparently someone else had changed the combination and she could no longer access it. She instructed me to remove it, go to Home Depot and buy another one and install it for her and then I could use the spare key..
After our long drive from Nashville, we were to go to the contacts residence and retrieve the key. Unfortunately, she gave us the wrong building but at least we had the correct phone number to call the contact and find out where she lived. The contact did not accompany us to the condo, which we thought was odd, but gave us the key and sent us on our way.
After doing some grocery shopping, my wife & I arrived at Unit 1308 at on Saturday, February 1, at 7 PM. As we entered the condo, we were greeted by a pile of dirty white towels on the floor near the washer and dryer, as well as someone's clothes still in the dryer. We walked into the kitchen, the sink was stained and dirty and there were still dishes in the dishwasher. Some dirty dishes had made their way into the cupboards as well. The stove had grease on it (the oven was clean) & the fridge had some sort of spill in it along with some of the previous tenant's food. The kitchen floor was filthy & your shoes would literally stick to it. The kitchen garbage can smelled and there was still some garbage in it.The previous tenant's used bedding was rolled up in a ball in both bedrooms. The main bathroom had what appeared to be dirt in the tub but actually was long dark scratches. There was hair on the master bathroom vanity and some kind of hardened gell.We set our luggage & groceries down and began to wash & clean from top to bottom. There was no mop so all the ceramic floors were cleaned on our hands and knees. We washed all the sheets and towels, washed all the dishes, even the ones in the cupboard, vacuumed all the carpets and dusted, and cleaned both bathrooms.
On Monday morning, we had a knock on the door. It was the cleaning service she had cancelled. They were there to retrieve their linens and towels which we had washed and were using on the beds and in the bathrooms. There were no other linens in the condo. The lady graciously allowed us to keep them for our stay which we greatly appreciated.
On Wednesday, I received a notice on my vehicle that it was going to be towed if I did not have a parking pass. I went to the management office and purchased a $20 permit. Parking was to be included in our rental fee. Apparently there was supposed to be a parking pass left for us to use, but there was not. I did receive my $20 back from the building management, who could not have been more supportive and understanding of our situation.
Conversations with this owner, through emails which I have kept copies of, were very confusing. She admits she cancelled the cleaning service prior to our arrival but didn't understand why the condo was not clean. We still aren't sure why she would think it would be clean when she didn't pay anyone to clean it. She stated that there were only 2 people in their before us so it couldn't be as dirty as we claimed. She suggested that we must be used to staying at the Four Seasons where we get maid service everyday. I had to remind her that even Motel 6 cleans the room for their next guest. She reluctantly agreed to reimburse us the cleaning fee of $99, still claiming it was our fault for not calling immediately, but now has decided its only worth $50. She has told us she has sent it but that proved to be untrue. She believes that because she offered to send a cleaning lady to clean, two days after we just cleaned it, that she has done her part. It is our fault for not calling her at 7 PM on a Saturday night so she could do something about it then. Not sure what, considering the time and day and the fact she no longer had a cleaning service and she lives in Georgia !! Anyway, if you are looking for an owner who is hands on, this is not the condo for you.She lives in another state so she depends on others to do her work for her, which is fine, if she doesn't cancel their service She accepts no responsibility for anything. It is always someone else's fault.
That said, the condo has wonderful views & is spacious. The building is clean and is constantly being maintained. The people who run the building are top notch and very helpful, even though I rented through a private owner. This is the reason for the high rating. I definitely recommend Emerald Isle as a destination, just not Unit #1308.
NOTE: Notice that there are no pictures of the TV's, one in the living room and one in each of the bedrooms, because they are not of this century & are certainly not HD as advertised. The DVD in the living room does not work. Pier park is 2 miles away, not the 1/4 mile as advertised. The two bedroom pictures she has displayed are of the same master bedroom with different furniture sets in it. We are not sure where the dark wood bedroom set with the flowing white drapes and those lovely linens are? Buyer beware.
