“Very pleasantly surprised”
Reviewed 18 August 2014

We were only planning a weekend trip before all of our teenagers started school or college, so were really only looking for someplace directly beach-side, that was a decent place to stay. We've stayed at other hotels in the area—big-chain hotels—and either weren't happy with the rooms or the atmosphere. This was NOT the case with Palmetto Inn. The staff were always smiling and helpful, whether at 9:00am or 11:30pm. The room was very clean, even the dishes, which isn't usually the case. The one time we saw the cleaning staff they were very nice, didn't have any issues with us not being ready for them to clean our room, and had already come and cleaned by the time we returned from the beach just a short while later. The pool was a big issue with my son, who LOVES to swim, and unlike every other hotel we've ever stayed at that closes their pool at 9-10 at night, Palmetto keeps theirs open til midnight so you can go play all day and swim, or relax in the hot tub, all night. What little sand was in the pool late that night was gone before it opened the next morning. We even saw the staff taking painstaking care to "vacuum" it out. Both my husband and I were very pleased with our stay at this hotel and will stay here again the next time we come down to PCB! The only problem I saw was parking. The parking lot beach-side is very small and most times you have to park across the street. This wasn't an issue with us since it was past the summer crowd and traffic was very light, but I could see it being a problem in the height of the season or if someone had small children.

We have stayed here 3 years in a row and we love it! It is family-owned and it shows. The prices are reasonable and they have several different rooms and suites to choose from. Daily maid service is included which is nice because all the sand gets swept and vacuumed by someone else!!! You just have to try this place once and you will find yourself going back year after year as we do and many other families do.

Loved this place!! Was an excellent choice having kids! The pool area is amazing, great location and employees are super friendly! Will definitely make this our spot to stay in PCB every year!! I loved that it was only 7 floors so you didn't have to wait forever for an elevator like in the bigger condos. The gift shop in the lobby is great and reasonably priced and our son loved the snow cones in the lobby! The tiki bar was great for adults.

We returned to the Palmetto for the second year in a row. We have 2 children 13 and 9. We love that the location is great, it is clean, it is nicely furnished without being over the top, the price is reasonable, they have everything you need in the lobby area, they have a great pool, it's just a great family hotel. It only has 7 floors and we liked it more for that reason. There is a Winn Dixie at a short distance across the street and not far from pier park. When we go to PCB, the Palmetto is where we will stay.

We spent a week in their Queen Deluxe Room and it was perfect for two adults and two children. This is actually a condo inside a hotel setting. There is a full size kitchen complete with dishwasher & plenty of countertop prep area. The refrigerator has an ice maker which is very important because there is no free ice machine here. Be sure to drop the arm on the ice maker as soon as you get into the room so it will start making ice asap. The Palmetto equips the kitchen with essentials like a coffee pot, blender, & toaster, Corelle dishes, flatware, cutting board, 3-pc cooking set consisting of a small skillet, saucepan, & soup size pot, 3 graduated sizes of plastic serving bowls with lids, a can opener & wine bottle opener. I was very happy that I brought my favorite large skillet, saucepan, good kitchen knife, measuring cup, wooden spoon and spatula since I cooked every meal. There is a round dinette set with 4 chairs that are covered in a vinyl(?) fabric which is great since we lived in swimsuits that were wet half the time.

The living room has a sofa sleeper with matching chair & ottoman also covered in the same water repellant fabric which again was a smart move, because no matter how careful you are, you'll still bring sand back in with you. Everything was easy to wipe off and comfortable to sit on. There was a flat screen tv with satellite channels. No dvd player so we brought our own player & dvd's for the kids.

The bedroom is huge. It has a BIG walk-in closet, 2 queen beds, a dresser, tv and large table/desk with a chair. With all this in the room, there is still so much floor space you could put a couple of roll-a-way beds or inflatable mattresses if so desired. There are no luggage racks to hold your suitcases but the closet was large enough to leave a couple of bags open on the floor & you still had plenty of room to walk around. The a/c is wonderfully cold and didn't cycle all night. The black out curtains block all light so you can sleep in if you want...but who wants to on the beach?! The sunrises are gorgeous...as are the sunsets!! We slept like babies except for one thing...the beds are hard. If you like a hard bed, it's no problem. But we woke up every morning with stiff backs so next year, yes we plan to return next year!, we will go down the street to Walmart and buy mattress toppers as a simple fix.

The balconies on the Queen Deluxe Suites are the largest and have two chaise lounge chairs and two white plastic patio chairs. You look straight down over the pool or out to the beach and water. The balconies are in the shade which made for a nice break after being on the beach all day. It was the perfect place to have coffee or drinks or even to take a nap.

Beachside lounge chairs and umbrellas are available for rent from a separate business. Go out early in the morning and pick where you want to sit (we needed an end so we could set up the toddlers sun tent & extra umbrella next to us), then negotiate your price & claim your spot for the number of days you will be there. Your name and the lounge chair numbers are kept in a log at his stand. It was normally $35 a day for two chaise loungers with cushions and an umbrella but we negotiated to $25 for 4 days. I'm sure if you were there 7 straight days, you could probably get him as low as $20 a day. If this is more than you want to pay, there is a Winn Dixie grocery store & a CVS drugstore within easy walking distance. Many people went there and purchased a $20-$30 7-foot sunbrella and bought beach chairs so they could pick where they wished to sit without paying a daily fee for lounge chairs & umbrella. There's so much room to spread out that it's not a problem at all. The Palmetto has a children's play area on the beach equipped with the Step 2 style equipment that never got hot to the touch. When you leave the beach, stop on the deck and rinse your feet off before slipping your sandals back on. I tried walking on the pool decking without shoes the first day and it was agonizingly hot. I couldn't make it all the way across without stopping and pulling my sandals out of my bag.

The atmosphere is the big draw for us to the Palmetto. This is a FAMILY oriented establishment & it was common to see families of multiple generations. It is privately owned, the family works there every day & the front desk is manned 24/7. They don't rent to anyone under 25 because they aren't interested in the college drinking/partying crowds. On the private beach in front of the Palmetto, we were never crowded, never heard any cussing, yelling or screaming & never saw a thong swimsuit. Out of 5 days on the beach, we only heard music played from a "boom box" one time and it was music we all enjoyed. There was the occasional adult beverage but they weren't the norm. Everyone was polite, friendly and having a marvelous time. Let me clarify that I'm no prude. My husband, friends & I all ride Harley's all over the U.S. & do our share of partying, but there's a time and place for everything. The Palmetto is for good clean family fun.

The water and sand are simply gorgeous! I was surprised to find the water so clear that I could see my legs and the sandy bottom even when I was in water over my head. You can walk out a good 20+ feet and the water never comes above an adult's knees so it's very enjoyable for the younger kids. Our 2 & 5 year old grandchildren played in the water safely with their pfd's. There were no jellyfish or anything else nibbling or rubbing on us, no rough shells to cut your feet, the seaweed was minimal and it was short so you didn't get that slimy feel of long weeds startling you. You could easily walk out to your chin and never step on the seaweed because you could see where you placed your feet. We never broke a sweat laying on the lounge chairs because the breeze was constant. I'm sure that's also why we never encountered one mosquito either.

HIGHLY recommend the Palmetto!!! It's at the west end of the beach where traffic still moves and isn't overcrowded. A short drive down the beach front road will have you at all the restaurants, activities & noise you could possibly want. Pier Park Dr. is THE place to visit for shopping, eating and even has an IMAX. As a side note, if you're in need of a new swimsuit, you can't beat Panama City Beach shops for the latest in all sizes (including plus sizes), shapes, etc. at very reasonable prices.

I know this has been extremely lengthy, but the Palmetto deserves all the praise we could heap onto them for maintaining the family friendly atmosphere we so enjoyed!!!!! See you next year!!!!

Room Tip: All "Queen Deluxe Suites" are by the elevators and there is the occasional noise. We alway...

Many thanks to the TA Reviewers that have taken time to express their thoughts on the places they have stayed. Once again you have come through and directed me to the right location. TA put me onto Palmetto Inn and Suites and it was just about perfect for us. Not Plush, Not Corporate, but nice, clean, comfortable, with all the amenities you could want. The owners run a good old fashioned ship. There are four things that I must have in a Great Room Rental. It must be Clean, with a Comfortable Bed, a more than functional AC/Heat system, and a Fire Hydrant water pressure shower. The rest is Lagniappe. The older I get the less I need a TV. This had it all. We had a Suite with a balcony on the second floor. The kitchen was fully furnished. It had a great view of the beach. The Cabana Boys took good care of us with our chairs and umbrella rentals. The 4 outdoor gas grills get more than their fair share of use. They are a little slow to cook, but who needs fast on vacation. The location is far enough away from the City and main part of the beach that you can miss the teenies and twenties showing off. Really enjoyed this experience, the staff was wonderful, and it probably won't be the last time we visit.

If you're looking for a party this isn't the place. Nice, clean facilities and is always maintained and quiet. We've stayed 3 different times and have never had a problem. Stay on the beachside as it's a nicer building plus you get the spectacular views of the Gulf. Only drawback is most tourists locations are not sighing walking distance. However, the service, kid and family friendly location makes this the crown jewel of PCB.
