“Buyer Beware - Poorly maintained rooms”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 May 2014

Suffered through 4 days in the European room which is code for poorly maintained and small. This room is the least expensive and the management makes little effort to maintain. Bathroom light cover fell on my face, the staff has been removing the cheap covers to remove bugs. I had fresh bugs in my light fixture everyday and bugs all over the bathroom vanity. Manager made no consessions to make up for the poorly maintained room, although the staff overall was very apologetic. Bed and pillows were the hardest and most uncomfortable I've ever experienced. No towel racks, no full length mirror. Minimal expectations not met. Staff is great, food is great, nice beachfront. Very old building, rooms need major attention. After multiple days of complaining, the maid did a thorough bathroom clean to address bugs. Sigh....nothing ruins a trip like a bad hotel experience. Only giving the second star because the staff was so awesome.

Room Tip: Do not book European Room

Do wish to apologize to Cher J about the issues she encountered here with us during her stay. I personally went to the room immediately after she called the front desk (the first night of her stay) to report that the plastic lens on the light over her bathroom sink and fallen and hit her on her face since I was concerned about her well being and wanted to find out more as to why this had happened. I did want to make sure that Cher J was alright and see if she needed any medical assistance. Fortunately, Cher J was alright, so my next concern was to see how this could have occurred and resolve the issue. One of our night maintenance men was along with me and he replaced a light bulb and re-secured the lens to the light fixture. I did ask Cher J if there was anything we could do for her and she told me that she would like to move to a room with a view of the beach or the ocean. I did apologize and explain we did not have any rooms available with beach or ocean views available because they were already reserved in advance since it was the Memorial Day weekend holiday.

We do appreciate Cher J's complimentary remarks about our staff, but would like to elaborate a bit more about what we did try to do in lieu of an upgrade (since we had nothing better available this weekend to offer her). On the last day of Cher J's stay, she asked one of our managers about a full length mirror, and when he learned about that issue, he had one of the full length mirrors we use for brides and bridesmaids (to do hair, makeup, and wardrobe) and placed it in her room. Realizing that Cher J was a bit disappointed about her stay with us, we tried to contact her on the last night of her stay to offer her complimentary breakfast on the morning of her departure. We were not able to speak with Cher J but did leave a voice message for her and asked her to stop by our front desk in the morning for a breakfast coupon. We did try to be attentive and apologetic and did offer her some goodwill compensation.

With all due respect to Cher J; she reserved our least expensive value priced room which is smaller, does not have a view, or include a refrigerator or microwave. Our European room is best suited for someone who is looking for a great deal for a stay at an Ocean Front hotel, but may not need the space, view, or amenities that we offer in our larger rooms with the views and amenities we offer at a higher price. We find that some folks review our property photos which feature the full array of what we have to offer, but then reserve our least expensive room because it is such a great deal or because our other more premium rooms are not available. The last thing we want is for someone to be disappointed about their stay with us, but it can be a real challenge providing an upgrade when we do not have an upgrade available to offer. We pride ourselves on being up front and honest about our room accommodations as well as what we have to offer here at the Beachcomber. We do have a variety of rooms for varying price points to fit different budgets. We make no secret about the features of our European rooms and do not differentiate between the way we maintain these rooms compared to the way we maintain any of our other rooms. We hope that those reading about us on Trip Advisor know that we are serious about taking care of our guests and properly maintaining every type of room here at the Beachcomber. The guest has the option to choose their accommodations with regards to the amount of space, view, bedding configuration, and amenities and that does vary according to the price.

I got such a great rate on this hotel I really was not expecting much. Its an older building, not extravagant by any means, but very well maintained. The room was very clean & comfortable (although pillows were hard as a rock). Nicely decorated, comes with a mini-fridge and a microwave. Large balcony overlooking the ocean. Because its connected to other balconies there's no privacy, but has three nice chairs, two of which are comfortable pillowed lounge chairs. And the view from there is incredible! Sitting out there is very relaxing. The beach connected to the hotel is great, with chairs & umbrellas to rent for the day at reasonable prices. Servers who come by to take drink orders on the beach or at the pool. Very well landscaped pool area & sitting other areas palm tree shaded chairs and hammocks facing the ocean. Service all around was incredibly friendly & professional. Definitely plan on returning & really would recommend it to anyone.

Room Tip: Go with the ocean view rooms. Probably need to stay in floors 3 or higher to really see the ocean, o...

The secret is out. This is such a great resort that I almost hate to rate it so high for fear that we'll want to go back and won't be able to get a room because it's full or they will have doubled the price. During our last cruise last fall, we decided we wanted to stay in Florida for 5 nights prior. We picked the Beachcomber in Pompano Beach because it was a little further than the Fort Lauderdale beach hotels so half the price. Wow ... did we luck out! So we stayed another 5 nights after our cruise this May. This resort has everything you can ask for. Wonderful ocean views from the spacious and comfortable balcony, great food, beautiful landscaping around the pool area, a fabulous beach, and the service is second to none. You won't believe how friendly the staff are. Keep in mind that this is a very old property but they work night and day keeping it in tip top shape. Our room was huge, although a little dated, but we were very comfortable. The only thing it lacked was an extra chair. Our room in the fall had a loveseat. The only chair we had in the room (809) this fall was the office chair at the desk. A little disappointing. Also, while they have tons of staff they seem to be short of housekeepers. They take a very long time to clean the room which can be a little annoying. But they do give you extra towels each day, so if your room hasn't been cleaned, you can still shower. There is no resort fee and you rent cabanas, umbrellas, lounge cushions, etc. when you want them, all for a very low price so you really save that way. They have a nice dining room but we ate on the covered patio beside the beach which was lovely. Food is great. Waitresses are so friendly. We rented a car both trips so found Fort Lauderdale and everything we wanted to do within a very easy drive. Almost everyone we met were return guests. Some have been going to the Beachcomber every year for years. I know we'll be back!

Room Tip: The first trip we had an oceanfront room. Very nice but it was quite windy on the balcony. So this...

My cousins and I had not seen each other in a while so we decided to plan a quick trip to the Fort Lauderdale area. We did some research and liked what we saw on Trip Advisor about the Beachcomber so we agreed that we would stay there. I called the hotel directly and found out that they have more room types to choose from than what I saw on line and have what they call their European type room with 2 double beds so we booked that.

Our flights landed within a half hour of each other and we all got to the hotel about 4 PM. The people working behind the front desk were checking in others ahead of us but took a quick second to acknowledge us and tell us we would be next. They seemed like they all knew what they were doing and were efficient, but took their time explaining things to the people ahead of us and seemed sincerely friendly. They handled us the same way and we asked if we could split the bill 3 ways when we checked out and they told us no problem and made us feel real welcome.

The check in experience set the tone for the rest of the stay which was just as nice. The room was clean and comfortable and rather basic, but big enough for 3 adult ladies. We decided to save on the cost of the room because we knew we would be spending on eating and drinking a bit over the weekend.

We did hit the town the both nights we were there, but did have breakfast and shared some appetizers and drinks by the pool the days we spent there. The service by the pool and tiki bar was very good and the food portions and quality were also very good and reasonable compared to some of the other bars and restaurants we tried in Fort Lauderdale. Everyone we came in contact with at the Beachcomber, the staff and the other guests all seemed so happy and friendly. We really enjoyed the atmosphere and environment at the Beachcomber and were sad to go when our visit there came to an end.

We highly recommend the Beachcomber and plan to tell the rest of our family and friends about this place. Hopefully we will be back again later this summer or in the fall with more of our family or better yet our significant others for a romantic getaway.
