A very worthwhile way to spend an afternoon. Volunteers are dedicated and knowledgeable about the birds they are tending. It is not very large and takes little time to get through. Try to plan your visit for the 2:30 feeding so you get to hear more interesting facts from the volunteer in charge of feeding. Spend some money in the gift shop. Give a donation as entry is free.

I just returned from a trip to Ponce De Leon Park with my kayak. It was the first time I used my kayak here. I launched at the boat ramp and paddled across the canal and out to the flats. I was looking for fish and I had a fly rod ready. The wind was mild from the south and the water was flat at 9:00 am. Some people were fishing from the two fishing piers on the channel. I went out to the drop off and drifted around , flinging a fly to no avail. It was nice to see how shallow the flats were. I parked the kayak and waded a little. The wind started to pick up and I decided the exploratory trip showed me the lay of the land. Next time I will paddle down south of the channel to the next point. The tide was going out and it was shallow. I will try to time the tides better next trip.

I came back and beached the kayak in front to the parking area and it made loading much easier. There were a dozen cars in the lot. Some people were in beach chairs and on towels sun bathing and some were on a picnic. The Peace River Wildlife Center is a neat place to see some of the birds of the area.

First let me say that this is a beautiful park! The white sandy beach area is perfect for a picnic and the short trail offers a great view of the waterway and all of its many creatures. There are two fishing piers too. The Wildlife Center is in the park and free to visit (though donations are accepted and recommended). The center may be small but the volunteers are so engaging that the experience is well worth the 30-40 minutes it takes for the tour. We learned a lot about the rehabilitation process and met the star of the center - Luna, the albino owl. He's so cute! There was also a flat turtle (his shell did not grow properly), other owls, raptors, and plenty of shorebirds. We had fun watching the pelicans chase a vulture that came into their open air cage just before feeding time. The gift store is great too. There are a lot of really unique items there that you won't find elsewhere.

The Peace River Wildlife Center is aptly, if coincidentally named … a place of PEACE, a respite, an oasis of rehabilitation for crippled, wounded and physically compromised members of the avian family. But it is more than that as well …, a showcase for humanity at its finest where volunteers and professionals join together to revitalize and shelter wildlife and bring comfort to a broad diversity of birds whose bodies have been damaged by humanity at its worst … through violence, carlessness or neglect.

One comes to the Peace River Wildlife Center not to observe caged birds but rather to marvel at the healing processes that fuel and energize this incredible operation. It is a "don't miss" for both SW Florida's permanent residents and for visitors to theregion.

Recently the Peace River Wildlife Center received a juvenile frigate bird as a permanent addition to the family. He (or she- they don't know yet) is now on view in the pelican pond area. Also on display is a rare white screech owl, who was brought in as a baby in the spring. A third bald eagle, also a juvenile ( completely brown coloring) is staying with eagles Captain Arthur and Bilfred until a permanent home is chosen for her. Two moor hens have been added to the shore bird habitat. Take a picnic lunch and enjoy the Pnce de Leon park after your visit to the Center!
