“Very Good Country Inn & Suites”
Reviewed 24 April 2007

We've stayed at this hotel twice and found it to be clean and quite. We normally like to stay at Country Inns or Hampton Inns (with interior entrances). Even though the names are the same, we've found much variation within brand names. We've had both good and bad experiences at these chains. The price is much better if you call ahead instead of showing up later when the rooms start to get booked up. We called at about 4 pm and were still able to get a room w/queen beds for less than $80. We paid much more last time we stayed here because the rooms were getting full, we didn't reserve ahead of time, and we got there late. The first time, 2 years ago, we paid over $100 for a room. There were cookies there when we arrived around 9:30 which was nice becaue most of these places don't keep cookies at the desk consistently. There wasn't as much variety of breakfast items like we're used to at Hampton Inns, e.g., no yogurt, no danishes, no donuts (we had some at a Hampton Inn in Philadelphia). Additionally, the orange juice tasted aweful.

  • Liked — Clean, consistent, inexpensive (<$80), close to I-95
  • Disliked — We weren't visiting downtown St. Augustine, but if we were, this hotel was far from downtown

I booked this hotel, thinking it was near the historical district, it wasn't. It's at least a 3 mile walk to get there.
The hotel was nice, clean, comfortable, but you have to pay for internet access. Nice, hot breakfast in the morning, with oatmeal, and cereals, and juice.

  • Liked — Alot to see if you like to walk
  • Disliked — Too far from historical district

The hotel was easy enough to find and is close to the historic district, about 5 minutes. It is right around the corner from the Fountain of Youth and Ripleys Museum. It was a bit of a pain to get in and out of and parking is limited in the back. No real complaints about the interior of the hotel, it has a quaint lobby with stairs giving it a B & B feel. The room was decent, it needed a little work as it had some peeling paint and the shower leaked. However, we were put off at check-in by a very rude employee who did not bother to greet us nor tell us what paperwork to fill out but just kept pushing things over the counter at us without saying a word. We discovered that we had left some of our toiletries at home and when we called down to get replacements were told no one would walk it to our room but rather we were expected to come and get it ourselves, despite the fact that it was 11pm. Luckily, we did not see that employee the rest of our stay and the two employees who checked us out were very friendly and the cookies at the front desk helped make up for our initial disappointment.

  • Liked — Close to Historic District
  • Disliked — Unfriendly Staff at Check-In and limited staff (i.e. no room service, no housekeeping at night)

Great location, easy parking. We had a clean, spacious room and bathroom, comfortable bed. (third floor) Ours was a suite with refrigerator, microwave, coffeemaker and sofa. Loved the cookies at the front desk, and the fact that vending machines had both Coke and Pepsi products. Front desk staff was very nice and courteous. Breakfast was good, cereal, waffles, oatmeal, boiled eggs, bagels, muffins, fruit, yogurt, juice. Negatives: -"High-speed" internet was very slow and not wireless, but this may not be the hotel's fault, it may just be the area. Hallway smelled like cigarette smoke, though all surrounding rooms were non smoking. We think this is due to the ventilation system. Shower water pressure was very weak. Pillows are TERRIBLE. Even with extra, they flattened so much we tossed and turned all night and awoke with our necks killing us. We would probably stay there again, but would definitely bring our own pillows.

We are currently staying at this facility. A relative is in a local hospital in critical condition. I have been trying for 30 minutes to get someone to answer the local phone at this facility. I cannot get an answer. I have verified with operator the phone is in service. My relative is in need of a family member right now and I have no way to reach them in the room. I am having to send someone for them. We had a similar incident two nights ago in trying to get someone at the front desk to answer so we could leave a wake up call. I belive this is a dangerous situation and for that reason we are checking out this morning (7/20) and going to another facility. Time trying to reach someone 7/20 from 0530 to 0605 and still no answer. No issues with room/cleanliness/breakfast bar, etc. Just communication - for this reason I am rating a Terrible. Just to confirm the number it is 1-904-827-1766

Orignally we booked at another hotel in Saint Augustine but decided to move due to the condition of the hotel. When we arrived we were quoted a rate of 139 for a room with 1 king bed but decided to leave. After visiting a few other hotels we went back and were told the room was now not available but a suite for 169 was. We decided to take it since all the other hotels were either more or booked. The room was clean and big. Located right next the bed was a hot tub however, we did not use it due to the fact that I worked in a hotel and know how often they are cleaned. The breakfast selection was wonderful and had a lot to offer.

  • Liked — Breaskfast bar
  • Disliked — nothing
  • Tips/Secrets — go during the week the rates are cheaper

My husband and I stayed here recently. The outside of the hotel looks new and well maintained and the lobby is homey and inviting and the staff members are very nice. The room was not as nice as expected. It was dark and had a slight musty, moldy smell, which was strange because the lobby and hallways smelled very clean and fresh. The room was clean and comfortable, but just not as nice as expected for a newer hotel. It is nicer than most of the other hotels in the area though, but it is not very convenient to the historic district. The free breakfast is better than some places with quite a bit to offer. The pool is somewhat small and was always packed during our stay, but it was to be expected over 4th of July weekend. Overall, it was fine for the few days we were there.
