We were so excited to be staying at this hotel. Our shuttle driver praised it, the trolley tours lauded it and we loved it too - the first 2 nights. We were looking for an elegant, sophisticated, understated and genteel throwback to the wonderful old days when glamor and ambiance were treasured. And that's what we got - the first 2 nights. And then the music started.
The lounge at the hotel is a part of the smallish lobby/reception desk area that you enter immediately upon coming in the front door. On the first 2 weekday nights, the lounge was only open until 9 PM and it was relaxing to sit and sip a drink and take in the beauty of the place. But on the weekend! As soon as you open the front door, the noise and screaming ladies and music assaulted your ears. One night there was some kind of reunion and the next night there was a wedding. Needless to say, everything suffered including the lobby ladies' room which not only ran out of paper towels, but had trash on the sitting bench, water all over and overflowing trash cans. Luckily we were able to move on down a few doors to the Old City Lounge for quiet drinks and conversation.
I know that every hotel needs to host events in order to make money. Certainly, I would have loved to attend a reunion or wedding in this hotel and would have joined in the fun. But I was there for another purpose and was disappointed as such. The rooms are quiet and we didn't hear street noise. We had a preferred view king and it was lovely. This was how we had perceived the evenings relaxing in the lounge.
We had dinner at Cordova 95 and were disappointed. The salad of feta, arugula and strawberry was very sad with a tiny sprinkle of feta and a couple hidden strawberries not even arranged appetizingly. The filets were excellent but the lamb and side dishes disappointed. Lunch, however, was excellent and the Kessler wines are very good.
The Casa Monica is more like a good time girl on the weekends instead of the Grand Dame that she should be. A major pro is that it is located in the heart of the old city within walking distance to everything.
