The room was a great price and clean. The bed was hard and neither of us slept at all well. The location is nice, as it is nice and close to the historic downtown area. The staff was friendly. I knew I was not paying nice hotel price, but I at least expected the bed to be somewhat comfortable. We were not planning to spend any time in our room so we did not need to pay for a nicer hotel. However, we will not stay there again because we want to at least get some sleep.

This hotel is very conveniently situated not far from the historical area of Saint Augustine. However only use the front entrance as the road leading out the back of the hotel (to the historic area) is dangerously potholed.
Desk staff were very polite and pleasant but the room is quite pricey for the old and worn nature of the rooms ($109 plus tax). No fridge, no breakfast and sheets/bed cover that kept popping up off the mattress leaving us sleeping on a bare old, worn, stained mattress (YUCK!). Our toilet barely flushed with the water rising up to a scary height before slowly sinking back down. We called the front desk and a polite young man arrived immediately with a rotor-rooter affair in a big plastic bag (to prevent gross dripping) and went to work on it. Afterwards it was improved in it's functioning.
BUT THE WORST PART....... on arriving we realized that none of the locks on the room were very good. Our room had a door leading into the adjoining room which had two bolts. Neither bolt worked. There was a sliding bolt, which slid into .... .nothing. Or there was a deadbolt - which slid into an empty space! We put a chair against the door. Worse yet, the deadbolt on the actual hotel door slid into a metal plate that was badly damaged and could be moved back and forth by hand! We could have complained and asked for a different room, but the hotel was very full (so what room would we get?) and we figured that it would not be an issue - why would anyone try to come into our room? Well, that was the wrong decision!
We got to bed very late - after 1:00 am due to a lovely evening out on the town in Saint Augustine. At 2:00 in the morning, a huge ruckus broke up outside our room. A truck began driving back and forth in front of our room with music up so loud that the entire room and door and windows were shaking, and then parked a couple of rooms down. Groups of youths with gang insignia began wandering back and forth yelling at each other and at the world in general. I was afraid to look out the window but peeked out the (unusually high!) security peephole on the door and saw various intimidating individuals coming (loudly) past our door. All of a sudden, willingly remaining in a room with that flimsy lock-plate seemed like a really dumb idea on our part. About 25 minutes later police arrive - one cruiser which did nothing to end the music blasting or the yelling - it just added police megaphones to the noise mix - police giving loud directives and rowdies yelling back at them. Eventually more police arrived and after some time the noise and foot traffic ended (about 3 am by this time). I lay in bed unable to sleep until 4 a.m when I fell into a fitful sleep.
Until.... 7:44 am. At which point someone in a souped-up, jacked-up truck began revving his engine as loud as he could (which was incredibly loud) and cranking HIS music. He then began yelling "Oh, yeah, are you awake NOW???? You were wide awake at 3 a.m. but NOW what about it????"
I am unsure whether he was one of last night's rowdies who were trying pay-back to whoever complained and brought the police, or an irritated fellow hotel customer who wanted payback for the revellers. Either way, I was once again lying in bed with heart pounding. So much for a night's sleep!
When I checked out in the morning I complained to the front desk about all of the noise and showed her pictures on my phone that I had taken of the broken locks. The front desk clerk was sympathetic and took $30 off our bill for the disruptions, and promised someone would fix the locks.
Next time I would stay in a more expensive hotel and hopefully they would have better clientele. To save money, it was not worth the terrible night's sleep.

Room Tip: If you insist on staying here, at least go for the second floor where you will feel more secure.

St. Augustine is an extremely fun place! This hotel is pretty good location wise. You can walk into town in about 15 minutes. It is pet friendly, clean, and a good size room. GREAT value.
