“Great little trip. Excellent operators!”
Reviewed 28 August 2014

It's a quick shuttle ride over to the Island and then you are off to shell collecting, playing in the surf or just hanging on the beach. There are tons of shells to gather up of every kind, not just the little ones you find on most the beaches but some of the big guys they sell at the stores, plus lots of sand-dollars out there too!

THINGS TO BRING: Drinks, snack, SUNSCREEN and that is about it. They will supply you if you like a snorkel, goggles, an umbrella for shade, and a shell bag (Shell bag was a BIG perk for us, it's the little things that count sometimes!)

OPERATORS: They were great, had excellent knowledge and were so friendly! Even on the way back from the island we spotted dolphin and the captain stopped the boat for us to view while of course providing us with information about them and other sea critters in the area.

HELPFUL TIP: ALWAYS CALL, this goes for any tour or trip. Tour guides and these operators can't control the weather or the seas, seems like a lot of people forget that.

All and all it was a good time and we got exactly what we expected based off the reviews and the website. Have a good trip!!

“Great excursion”
Reviewed 26 August 2014

A great way to get off the beaten path and do something that kids and adults will both enjoy. Great shells and sand dollars to be found as well as the occasional manatee swimming by. Pack sunscreen, hats, water, etc. This was our second year with these folks and we'll do it again next year.

“Sunburnt but worth it”
Reviewed 20 August 2014

Ok sunburn my fault, not enough sunscreen in over 90' weather. For only $25 each they take you it island and leave you there for 2-4 hours.they provide snorkel stuff and shell bags. We had a ball but the best was while I was wading a manatee went by me within spitting distance ,my husband jumped in and patted the creature.WOW. The staff were super and had everything planned.you even get to keep the shell bag. Loved it....

“quiet, full of shell, and lovely!”
Reviewed 20 August 2014 via mobile

my daughter (6) and i were trekked down from st. pete beach and it was well worth the trip. after a short boat ride to shell key, we explored the island and found some amazing shells - the further out you trek, the better the shells! take some drinks and snacks with you...

“A tired organisation, bossy, a glorified boat commute, too expensive”
Reviewed 19 August 2014

A warm welcome in the shop, downhill from there. The couple running it have lost their mojo, rules regulations and orders about snorkels and umbrellas. Woe betide anyone who separates snorkel from mask, we didn't fortunately but the poor family who did were treated to an underhand dosing of sarcasm. All you get for your $25 per person is a short boat ride and a cheap guide shell identification key sheet ON THE RETURN JOURNEY! No talk, no help no guidance. A lovely safe and special place but find a different way together there, unless they improve positive outlook and customer relations or value for money.

Shuttle54, Owner at Shell Key Shuttle, responded to this review, 20 August 2014
Our roundtrip fare includes the use of mask and snorkel (or mask only if that is the customer's preference), beach umbrella for each group and a mesh bag for shells. We give a briefing at the dock and hand out a visitors guide to each group that has a lot of great information about the preserve along with a detailed map. Another briefing is given on the ride over. Captain and crew are available to answer any additional questions our guests may have after the briefings. We do ask that if a mask and snorkel is taken as a set, that it not be separated as we lose a lot of gear that way. We also ask that the large beach umbrellas not be assembled and left unattended as they can (and have) blown away if there is a wind gust. We give the same instructions every day to our guests and this is the first review we've had stating that someone felt we were being sarcastic. Although we lose gear almost daily, we never charge anyone for that but we will ask if the gear is perhaps somewhere else, like in a tote bag. Sorry you felt that we were bossy and sarcastic, that was certainly not our intention.
