“Pleasantly surprised”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 March 2014

When we first entered the courtyard, we were leery. It was chilly so people were not at the pool or beach but were sitting on their plastic chairs in the grass with their coolers. But all concern fell away when we had lunch at Jimmy B's while waiting for our room to be ready. The staff are super friendly and the atmosphere was exactly what me and my friend were looking for. 3 bands, 7 days a week. Lots of singing and dancing till wee hours. Felt like a kid on spring break, but without the annoying spring breakers (at least not too many). Room remodeling is nice. The new-model window air conditioner did not keep me awake, as older models usually do. It was no 5-star hotel, for sure, but that isn't what we were looking for. We wanted a pool, a beach, a bar and bands! Going back next year with more friends!

Room Tip: We picked a beach view room, but couldn't see much from first floor. Next time we will select 2...

We should have known something was amiss when we saw the duck in the swimming pool with the guests. However, having a good sense of humor, we laughed it off. Then we opened the door to our room. The odor hit us like a brick wall as we were unpleasantly surprised at the seediness of the room. I suppose "newly renovated" has a broad spectrum and this room was not at the high end of that spectrum...Still being game, we pried opened the windows and turned the a/c unit on to "get the air circulating" while we unloaded our vehicles. Upon taking stock of the room, we realized we needed to go shopping for amenities that should come standard in a room with a kitchen (paper towels, cups, etc.). After settling in, we embarked on the adventure of cooking on a stove with one burner slanted at an extreme angle and using a plastic bag with holes poked in it as a strainer. Just a note here, slicing strawberries with a butter knife while using the plastic lid to a sushi tray as a cutting board is not for the feint of heart. One must be fortified with a glass (cup) of wine for this!
Seriously though, we tried to be good sports about the place, but the line must be drawn when safety becomes an issue. Our last night at the hotel was unacceptable. The other guests were so out of control, they were fighting outside our door. The police had to become involved and this fiasco went on from midnight to three in the morning. This is not cool. Especially when we called the front desk at 3:00 a.m. and their security wanted us to step outside to locate the problem for them.

Room Tip: Go to another hotel.

Here I sit in Pittsburgh - looking out over the lawn as the snow is falling again and remembering how great my last visit to the Beachcomber was and looking forward to getting back to their great resort. The staff did everything first class and made sure we had a good time. We had stayed at this hotel in the past and never found anything lacking. The pool areas were always clean, the gardens are beautiful and the rooms had everything we needed. The bedding and the room was clean and always updated with clean towels and soaps. The bar (a sport bar with more then enough TV's) and the restaurants are a relaxing place to hang out after the sun goes down. Most of all, we are always made to feel like we are "part of the family" - from the time we arrive until the time we leave. Try the Beachcomber - you will love it & you will want to come back.

We stayed here again in Feb 2014. Over a year since our last visit, the whole place has been renovated, including pools and walkways, and of course rooms. Jimmy B's beach bar is three times as large with a nice mix of soft chairs along with tables and bar stools. Drinks, food are always good.
A number of new staff people, all nice to deal with. We asked for wine glasses at the bar and they loaned us two no problem.
We've booked for next Feb. Hope the weather is a little warmer than 2014.

My wife & I flew down to FL in the morning to attend a wedding in St.Pete's scheduled for 3 PM. Even though we arrived & checked-in at the Hotel around Noon, we were advised that our room wasn't ready yet. Unfortunately, even after an hour & a half wait, all we were told was that the room was not guaranteed to be ready until 4 PM & that there was nothing that even the Manager (whom we also spoke to) could do to get us a room earlier. Clearly, a stressful welcome knowing that we needed to get ready & attend a wedding at 3. Fortunately, after an ongoing conversation that was stressful & going nowhere, our room suddenly was ready at 2. Unacceptable customer service, IMHO. Sad, because the Resort looks nice. SHR

Always something going on at the Beach Comber, while I stayed there was a
stand up comic show each night, and of course there is live entertainment at Jimmy B's beach bar that can be loud, so if you are looking for quiet, this is NOT the place for you. That said, there are two outdoor pools that have bar and restaurant service, I also noted a lift for the walking impaired to access the pool, as well as full menu at the beach bar. The beach bar over looks the Gulf of Mexico where you can walk right out onto St.Pete's Beach. Front desk people where very professional, and had my reservation papers in order on arrival.
Room was clean with two beds with white sheets and quilt, tells me clean bedding, wash room with tub/shower, while showering, hot water was kind of fluctuating. The room came with complimentary fridge, microwave, coffee machine/coffee, hair dryer, there was a flat panel TV that worked fine There was a safe in the walk in closet that I did not us, not sure but I think I saw something about a fee to us it, don't quote me about rental. Parking in front, and on the side of the hotel, but I had to back out, there was not turn around. I enjoyed my stay at the Beachcomber.

Room Tip: First sun to the rooms on the north wall.

Low grade hotel on the beach. This hotel is a rundown spring break party hotel with poor amenities! Famous for its Jimmy B's bar on the beach. Loud music and loud drunk guests until 3 am most nights. Food was mediocre at best but wait staff was friendly and hospitable. The room had a peculiar smell and the carpet stained my feet black. Wireless internet even in the lobby was awful. Could not even print out my boarding passes. I would highly recommend many other hotels on the strip. Take a pass on Beachcomber!
