“Great place”

My husband and I have stayed at SanDestin 4 times in the last 6 years. The first time we stayed through the resort itself, it was alright, but the 3 times since we have rented through owner, we do not go through SanDestin as they are higher and they cannot tell us exactly where we will be staying. We always stay on the bay side of the resort. This for us is very quiet just like staying at home. We always rent a home either on the links or on the lake with a view. The last time we stayed we ate one time at the new Baytowne area, it was way too expensive and the food was terrible. We stay away from all restaurants at the resort and always eat in town where the locals eat. We always shop at Winn Dixie and eat breakfast and lunch at the home and eat out for dinner. We always stay either in the Spring or Fall as the rates are cheap and the weather is better usually not as humid, in the 70's- 80's. The golf courses are great on the resort, a little pricey but there are other courses in Destin and Niceville that are half the price. The down side of renting from owner is no ammenity card, some have it some don't. We love the beaches just taking walks, we find it is never crowded during this time of the year. Fishing is free no license required if you fish on the resort. I'm always excited to go to this area and love it. Enclosing pictures of the last home we rented. The price was right less than 200 a night. It had 3bd 3bath., very clean.

We have just returned from another wonderful get away to Sandestin. Since our last visit the resort has opened a new water slide (huge inflatable that is great fun!), a new restaurant in the Market Shops - Beef O'Brady's an incredibly run family sports place and new stores in their village of Baytowne Wharf. All the staff is always friendly and our room in Westwinds was perfect. You get what you pay for, and dollar for dollar this is the best. We can't wait to return again.

We have 5 children and frequent Sandestin several times a year. We own a home in the Fountains, a gated area across the street from the Baytowne Village. We rave about it to friends and family and encourage them to visit. When our friends decided to join us for spring break, we put them in touch with the reservations people. For some reason, every time we've referred someone there, the reservations people put them in the most disgusting dumps in the resort. On more than three occasions, our friends and family have come down, at our recommendation, and have been put in something that looks like a tired Days Inn...dirty, old, ugly, etc. We know the place well and have told our friends to request certain condos, etc. but they always tell them they have to rotate the rentals, otherwise everyone will want the new, well decorated units. I'm embarassed that I keep raving about this place...the resort should have minimal standards that property owners must abide by if they want the resort to rent out their units. One instance the carpet was so disgusting...it had what looked like pet urine stains all over it. The dishwasher was broken for days and the front desk people were surly. And, the Elephant Walk pool was full of drunks...the kids were scared to go in. Seems like the resort needs to clean up its act if it expects to keep up with the competition.

My husband had to go to a conference and reserved a condo at the Baytowne Wharf, so we all decided to go (2 kids 13 & 15). There were no huge problems during our weekend stay, just dozens of minor inconveniences and disappointments, so much so we'd just laugh when something else unpleasant happened.

We'd been told getting into the room around noon (checkin is at 4:00) "shouldn't be a problem" but it was. There was another huge conference the same weekend which made eating in almost any restaurant difficult--this was just our bad luck, of course, but there was also a billfish tournament which meant certain amenities weren't available; e.g., they wouldn't rent us bikes at the only spot within walking distance "because the weigh-in will be starting in a couple of hours."

My kids were too old for the activities so I can't judge those, but I can't say that a "village" where you can't even buy a quart of milk or a couple of diapers or rent a DVD is very kid-friendly. There is a Publixx right out the back gate, but they keep that fact that well hidden in the maps, lists of shops, etc. (One of the small disappointments--we strolled out with the kids to get an ice cream, but the shop closed at 9:00, only about a half hour after sunset--who makes these business decisions?)

What irritated my husband was that it seemed like every time we stood still, someone tried to sell us a time share. When you're paying three hundred dollars a night, you shouldn't have to dodge sales pitches from salesmen posing as helpful, friendly resort employees.

I must agree with the other reviewers who found the staff's attitude less than ideal. In many cases the help seemed to be "privileged" high school or college kids with a summer job, and the arrogance they felt towards the guests came shining through, even though they carefully said the yes ma'ams and no sirs they were trained to say. This kind of "they can't wait for us to leave" feeling magnified every inconvenience and erased any sensation of luxury.

To end on a positive note, we stayed in Observation Point North and it was lovely--nicely decorated and seemed quite new. Our room overlooked the grassy square and it was fun to sit on the balcony and watch people milling around in the little faux "village." We had good meals in the pizzaria and Hammerhead's and a very good meal in Bistro Bijoux--all three served by pleasant, respectful wait staff.

I just returned from a long weekend - girls trip to the resort and had a fabulous time. We stayed on the bayside at the Pilot House. Room was spotless, roomy and virtually brand new. We were steps away from the fabulous village that reminded me of a little bite of Charleston. You would never know where you were...a happening little village in the middle of a golf resort. No need to go anywhere else in the area! (Although bars in Destin stay open til 4am if you want to try something new!)

Don't miss Hammer Heads for dinner or drinks! It's right on the bay, has live music every night and has killer Hurricaines! The crowd turns a bit older after 10 though.

The beach here is perfect. A little close quarters but with the beach bar right there...who cares. The sand is bright white and the water emerald green. You can see all the way down.

I grew up near the Maryland coast line...it's not the highrise, loud, boardwalk, people filled location you'll find there...it's super relaxing. There is a pool, restaurant, snack bar, pool bar and beach bar all at the same spot with live music every afternoon. You can't beat it. Just bring your check book. Average frozen beverage costs about $7-9 bucks a pop. If you are going to run a tab all day...be careful!

Would return in a second. Great resort for all ages.

We have been coming to Sandestin for 22 years...my grandmother lives there. We hate it. 95% of the time the rooms are extremely dirty unless you stay in the newer sections which look good but always have problems. The rooms in the village look nice but our dishwasher, dryer and tv didn't work - they also did not fix them for us. Our used bath towels were rolled up and put neatly back in the basket (mascara stains were the give away!) - when we notified the manager she sounded nice but did nothing for us - how disgusting can it get!!!! If I was managing this hotel I would have comped our whole stay - but that's Sandestin - always problems and nobody cares. I could tell you about the 3 times a year we have to come to this place and all the problems we have CONSISTENTLY but you would be reading for hours. When I have written them letters and emails, I have never once received a reply - except for advertisements of upcoming specials. It's really too bad Club Intrawest is there - that is a high quality company that we stay often with in Whistler, B.C. and love.

Sandestin is absolutely BEAUTIFUL! We loved everything about the resort. However, I would not spend the $230 a night we spent to stay in the Westwinds Condo again. It was just OK...nothing fancy and nothing overly nice. I've stayed in nicer chain hotels for a much cheaper price. The washer and dryer, which was supposed to be a plus was pathetic. It took four cycles to get our three beach towels dry on the last day before we packed to return home. Also, it's pathetic to have to pay this much for a room and still pay to rent beach chairs in my opinion. The room we were given was on the 4th floor and would have had a beautiful view had it not been for the palm tree top that hung over our balcony railing. The complex was booked so we were unable to move to a different room. The cleaning service was just ok...the floors were covered in sand when we arrived. After spending a lot of time in Baytown Warf I can say that it will be our choice next time we visit. The hotels there are beautiful, especially the Pilot House. We ate almost every meal at Baytown and let me tell you...Jim and Nick's BBQ is WONDERFUL!!!! It's well worth the money and oh so yummy! The worst meal we had was Poppy's Seafood Factory...WAY too expensive and the food is REALLY rich so order light! Another Broken Egg Cafe is great for breakfast and very reasonably priced. Our two and a half year old daughter really enjoyed the children's activities. Staying on the warf side is also an advantage because it's closer to the children's activities. We will go back to Destin and we will stay at Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort...we won't spend the high price to stay at the WestWinds though.
