Great place to learn even more about Sanibel and the Foundation's efforts to preserve it's environment. There are interactive exhibits - a butterfly atrium - wonderful trails - nursery with plants for sale - and nature at it's best! The observation tower offers the opportunity to "get above it all" and enjoy the scenery. Overall, our stop at SCCF was well worth it and we will probably return there next year to see it again!

Two thirds of the Island is in conservation due to the efforts of this organization. They made it possible for you to see what a pristine Barrier Island looks like.

I kept seeing “SCCF” on signs that were posted on the turtle nests on the beaches so I felt compelled to visit their facility to learn more. There is a $5.00 donation which is worth the cause. They have a few rooms with live animals like snakes and turtles (maybe rescues). There was lots of information to read about the local wildlife as well as the water quality detection technology. There is a walking path behind the facility which takes you to a look-out tower. My husband and I visited during a fairly hot time of day so we didn’t see much wild life; a volunteer working there said that wild life is usually quiet during the hot time of the day. If you plan to check out the walking path I would suggest going early in the morning and wear clothes that you can get dirty since the path is part dirt and part board walk. There is also a native plant nursery to visit.

We only made it as far as the entrance building because it was far too hot to wander the trails (and we're Floridians!). There are some cool turtles and snakes and a small touch tank that the kids liked. I would have liked to explore the rest of the area!

We were on Sanibel over the 4th of July holiday weekend. This was high on our list of places to visit. It was closed all weekend! This seemed a bit odd considering its an island that relies on tourism. Disappointed.
