“Doing the Sanibel Stoop”
Reviewed 18 February 2012

Spent 3 nights at this family run property the end of January. Everyone was as pleasant in person as they had been via email. It is a lovely, beach front, quiet and cozy location. Our room was large with a great front porch area .... perfect to display our shells !! The rooms are very close to the beach and shelling is great there at low tide. We will definitely be back again!!

Room Tip: Off the beaten path ... everything you need for any meal is included in the kitchen !!

to reviewed, but all in all I can recommend it, if you are prepared to not to meet perfection in every detail. We spent 2 nights in one cabin and then had to move to another one, but we knew that in advance. Both cottages were well equipped, plenty of dishes, large fridge, clean and a bit of shabby chique here and there. But no complains about the rooms. The beach's is short walk away and you have to secure one of the few beach chairs that have not yet completely desintegrated and carry it down, as well as an umbrella, if you wish to have some shade. The beach is nice and endless, the water wonderful with dolphins circling really close around us as we swam out somewhat. My son wasn't convinced it were dolphins, so he hurried back to the beach! If you travel with children this is a perfect spot to go to. Everybody - including myself, I have to admit - became totally addicted with collecting shells, taking them back to the bungalow in the evening and checking in the reference book what a rare specimen we found! It' s really great fun for young an old and a visit to the nearby shell museum worth while. we never cooked at home but went to one of the many diners along the main road. Anyway, we loved the place despite it's little imperfections! After all, we were on holdays!

Off the beaten path, literally. You turn off a main road onto a dirt one to find these cottages. Immediately, we were charmed by this old world Floridian beach front property. It is nestled into the landscape where you go back in time which is unusual in this day and age. Gulf Breeze Cottages are a stand out gem. The accomodations are very clean and the hosts are friendly & helpful. We weren't going to stay overnight but ended up staying two nights.

The property is surrounded by a cookie cutter style hotel whose owners understandably want to purchase this property. I can only hope it is never sold. You can stay at regular hotels anytime, anywhere. Sanibel Island is an escape from the same ole, same ole. Why stay at a location that is the same ole, same ole?

I rate the kids activities as excellent according to my standards. Yours may differ. The beach, bikes, and grilling were a hit for us. If you want your kids to have more stimulation, this might not be the place for you.

I totally fell in love with Gulf Breeze Cottages and found it incredibly difficult to leave.

great beach hut style accomodation a few steps from the beach. The only criticism would be the price is a bit steep for what you get.

First of all thank you for taking the time to review our cottages on this website. I am glad you had a relaxing trip. However, I disagree with you on the price of staying here. I feel we are one of the better deals out on Sanibel. Maybe for your next visit you can come in the fall.

Thanks again.

We stayed in the one bedroom cottage and loved it. The cottage was only a short walk to the beach and there were bike rentals on site. The staff was extremely friendly and the cottage itself was clean and comfortable. For the two of us, there was plenty of room, but I think it would be a bit tight for a family of four. There is a kitchen with stove, microwave, refrigerator. The kitchen itself was fully stocked with pots, pans, plates, etc. There is also free wi-fi.

There are umbrellas you can take to the beach, as well as beach chairs. They also give you beach towels. There was also a plastic container to be used to collect shells.

There is NOT a dishwasher which is a bit of a drag --especially when on vacation. There isn't any daily room service; however, they will replace towels if you put them in the container and leave them outside. Check-out time is 10 am, which I find a bit early. The cottages are also fairly close together and there is a building that is also very close to the cottages. IN other words, there isn't as much space between the cottages and other buildings as the photos on the website would have you believe.

Overall, we really liked our cottage and would stay there again.

Thank you for taking the time to review us online.

I will try to address some of your concerns. Few cottages on sanibel offer daily maid service or kitchen with dishwashers. 10AM is standard checkout time for most smaller hotels and resorts. We try to accommodate late check outs when we can. Hopefully next time you come to visit us we can arranger for a later check out.

Thanks again.

We just came back from Sanibel Island, Florida. This is a small hotel with both King and Queen rooms as well as one and two bedroom cottages. We loved the quiet location. The one bedroom guest cottage had both indoor and outdoor space to enjoy. It had its own outdoor table with umbrella, a small living room with flat screen tv, a VHS tape player (no DVD), a small kitchen (with all the needed pots/pans/plates) with range and oven, microwave, and large refrigerator, as well as a bedroom and small bathroom with a tub/shower combination. It was decorated in beach type motif and wicker furniture. There was also an enclosed, screened porch with a day bed and a rattan table and two chairs.
The property is well maintained and clean. There are bicycles to rent on site and numerous bike trails around the island. There are also propane barbeques scattered throughout the property. Coin laundry is available on site. In front there is a patio area with additional seating, BBQ, and lounge chairs and a large grassy area dotted with palm trees. The beach was approximately 300 feet from our unit. There are free VHS movies to use as well as free paperback books available on the honor system.
What we missed most was that there was no pool. However, the beach was close and also good to go shelling. The water was calm with almost no waves at all. It was only about one to two miles from Jerry's Grocery Store.

Room Tip: Cottages are quiet and feel like your own guesthouse. Cottage 2 had a direct view to the ocean from...

We stayed for one night in cottage 11 which is the one nearest to the beach. Office staff are lovely and extremely helpful. The cottage is cute from the outside but a little tired inside. No dishwasher and very basic amenities. Lots of rust spots on anything metal inside, dead flies in the crack in the bathroom windowsill. Noisy aircon unit. Chairs a little battered. Overall the place was clean but could just do with a facelift. If you want to be close to the beach, this is ideal. Value for money is probably not that bad considering the prices on Sanibel.

Thank you for taking the time to write your comments and concerns about Gulf Breeze.

We are sorry you thought the room seemed "tired inside". A lot of work has been done on that cottage since September. New mattresses were purchased and a new AC unit has been purchased as well. The noise should no longer be an issue. Also, in October new chaise lounges and beach chairs were bought.

Let us know if there is anything else that needs to be addressed. We hope to have you as a return guest again soon.
