Ranked #5 of 19 Hotels in Sanibel Island

Reviewed 14 May 2014

Located at the eastern end of the hotel area of this tropical island, the West Wind Inn provides a nice alternative to the pricier hotels on the beach. Pool, grills, a poolside bar all included. Rooms are clean and well appointed. Nothing luxurious but comfortable.

Room Tip: Try to get a room facing the Gulf.

My wife and I have stayed here on a number of occasions and this time we had a most enjoyable holiday. There are only private houses further north of the hotel so the beach never becomes too crowded. As well as having a good sized pool, the hotel will provide you with beds and umbrellas on the beach for $20 a day.
Staff were excellent. Their Normandie restaurant is now open 5 nights a week and the food there is excellent. However, note that the bar closes at 9:00pm which is somewhat early for European tastes!
I would agree with a previous contributor that the hotel is ageing but this could be due to the fact that it may be up for sale. Whatever happens, some money needs to be spent on the gardens, new pool bar tables, new pool bar umbrellas, more umbrellas around the pool and more staff on duty when Happy Hour comes around. The locals seem to know when the snacks will appear and have consumed them before hotel guests can get near!!
My only real gripe is that the air conditioning system in the room is noisy if you want it to work effectively.

My niece had her wedding on the beach and it was perfect. Kim and her staff were very helpful. Kim knew everything my niece wanted. My niece was relaxed and stress free on her wedding day. The restaurant on site catered the wedding and everyone raved about the food. The entire staff was very friendly during our entire stay. I would highly recommend someone having a wedding at this hotel.

The West Wind is getting a bid long in the tooth but we think it is still worthy of consideration. This was our first visit to Sanibel, so we don't have basis for comparison, but I didn't see many other properties that were right on the beach at this price point. Our stay was only 2 nights as we were doing a multi-stop swing throughout Florida.
Our room (213) had a great pool view and a very good ocean view. We saw another room that had a much larger kitchenette but didn't have much of a view. So, if you're travelling with kids or a group, you might want to make that trade-off. This other room had 2 queen beds and a table that could seat 4 for a meal or games. It also had a full size fridge and 4 burner stove/oven, so you really could use it as a full-service apartment.
If you are used to mid-range hotels, you will probably notice that the mattress is a little worn, the towels are a tad on the thin side and the furniture's not exactly Ethan Allen. But... you didn't come to Sanibel to stay in your room, right? I will say the facility appears to be clean and reasonably well maintained.
The beach is very clean and tidy. It's not, however, where you'd do your championship shell collecting, but there are plenty for you to choose from. When we were there, the beach was pretty deserted. If you want to hang out for the day, the hotel will set you up with 2 chaise lounges and an umbrella for $10 or $20, I think it was $20, but we didn't do it so I don't recall exact cost.
As far as dining, we only had 1 breakfast. The food was tasty and prompt but the post-delivery service wasn't good. Our server seemed a little distracted with regulars and/or those wanting to chat. The hotel is situated in a row of resorts/hotels, vs. the center of town, so dining options are a little limited if you're trying to stay on foot. We enjoyed a Happy Hour at The Sandbar. It's a 15-20 min. walk so if it's not too hot, that's an option for dinner/drinks. The snack menu was great and we made a meal of it.
The other highlight at the West Winds property is the pool bar. One night they had a guitarist/singer and some freebie snacks and drink specials. I wish I knew his name as he had a great collections of 70's -90's folk/pop classics and a knack for nailing the signature acoustic guitar riffs for each. Kerrie the bartender is a great host and the locals add a little color.
I don't know if we we'd go back to Sanibel since we've not been to other gulf coast spots, but if we did, we would give the West Winds another shot. If you decide to stay, just manage your expectations accordingly and keep in mind that you will be a 1 minute walk to having your feet in the water!

Room Tip: Ask for a room behind the pool.... that will also get you an ocean view. See comments regarding kit...

Thank you for your review. We are happy to see that you had the room of your dreams and had a wonderful view of Sanibel Island beach. Our poolside bar with live music and snacks is one of the many reasons guests love our hotel and we are happy to hear you were able to experience that. We understand we have regulars and apologize for our server being slightly distracted by them. All guests are our importance! We appreciate you choosing us for your stay and hope to see you on the Gulf again in the future.

We returned to the West Wind after a four-year interval, having planned to spend much longer this time round. We are here four 10 nights and have another 4 to go. Our room is a cool haven from the heat outside and is kept spotlessly clean with linen and towels changed daily. We opted for a room with a kitchenette so that we didn't have to dine out every day. Our ground floor room has a screened area for sitting in and we can see the sea from here, as well as the area around the pool. But the best thing about the West Wind is the direct beach access; every morning I go out to see the sunrise, joining the early bird shellers out there. I am on the lookout for the many varieties of shore and sea birds and dolphin, since my first visit here I watched dolphin come right into the shallows near my feet! This has not been repeated ...... so far. We spend many days just walking up and down the beach, but have also been more energetic and explored the island on bikes which are available right here at the hotel, provided by Billies Bikes. We have some thunderstorms forecast for a couple of days but, you know what, it really won't matter because it's still beautiful and warm and exciting. We will keep coming back to Sanibel whenever funds allow and we will always stay at the West Wind.

Room Tip: If you want a view of sunsets, try asking for upper floor of the beach end of Buttonwood. I think yo...

Thanks for returning to West Wind Inn! Our cleanliness and prompt service to our guests is extremely important to us. Biking riding is an extremely popular activity on the island, with over 30 miles of biking trails! We also offer umbrella and chair rentals on our beach for the next time you stay with us as well!

My husband spent couple of nights searching for a good, affordable place in Sanibel. As a result we decided on West Wind Inn.
Pros: located in a nice quite area, but I guess this is how the entire island is. The room we stayed in had a small kitchen with all the utensils which allowed us to cook our own breakfasts. The hotel has very nice swimming pool and access to the beach. Each room has a private patio. Staff is very friendly and courteous. Minutes away from State Preserve, supermarket, dining places and Captiva island.
Cons: cannot think of any. Maybe just that there is no wireless connection (or very poor one) in the room, Only in the swimming pool area. It's not cheap, but hey, it's Sanibel, people are paying money to come and enjoy the nature in a secluded place. The hotel was actually one of the cheapest in the area.

Thank you for choosing to stay with us at West Wind Inn. Our clean, private, quiet rooms make our guests very happy. We also have biking rentals near the property to experience Sanibel the "islander" way. Thank you for enjoying our pool. We are currently working on upgrades an increasing the wireless signal is one of them!

We stayed in Room 211 on the second floor right on the beach. The room was nice with a small kitchen and nice bathroom. The best part was the balcony overlooking the ocean where we had tea or cocktails. You can rent lounge chairs and umbrellas for the day for $20 for 2. They brought them out and picked them up at night. There was a pool bar with food and drinks. We loved the convenience of being right on the beach, with chair service and dining & drink service at the hotel. The hotel also had a pool, tennis, shuffle board and bikes for rent which we didn't use. Would definitely come back.

Room Tip: If you get a second floor ocean front room such as #211 you have a beautiful view of the ocean. On...

An ocean view is probably one of the most rewarding experiences one can have when on vacation in Sanibel Island! We are glass you enjoyed your view and cocktails. Don't forget to enjoy our pool and poolside bar to enjoy some cocktails down there as well, while being able to take a dip ion the pool and sunbathe there as well!
