My wife and I stayed at the Shalimar Motel for Memorial Day weekend and the experience was less than the romantic getaway we had hoped for. On the plus side, the room was quaint with a usable kitchen, and you are really just a few steps from the beach. On the negative side the bathroom looked old and the faucet only dispensed hot water. The problem with this old building is that the walls are paper thin. If you stay on the bottom floors you will hear everything (I mean everything!) going on upstairs. The first night we barely slept because of the people upstairs, we had to go to CVS and get earplugs to get some sleep. Would stay here again?...maybe in one of the cottages, but the I would stay clear of the Motel....

Room Tip: Anything but the bottom floors of the Motel

We have visited Sanibel and Captiva many times over the years. This was our first time staying at the Shalimar....and it won't be our last!! The grounds are well maintained and the rooms very clean. We stayed in one of the motel rooms and it was more than adequate for myself and my three children. Being located right on the beach was perfect! The resort provides beach chairs free of use. The resort has a nice small, homey feel to it. You will not be disappointed!! The gentleman at the front desk at check-in was so accomodating and helpful.

We can't wait to return!!

Room Tip: Our only caveat was staying on the first floor of the motel. You could hear noise coming from the u...

We stumbled upon Shalimar by coincidence in december 2007 and have come back every year since. We always stay in a cottage and feel Shalimar suits our purpose just fine. It is clean, quiet, near the beach and staff is friendly. All in all a great place to stay, we will be back. The pool could be warmer though....

We stayed here for one night whilst on a tour through Florida, and hadn't pre booked. Our room was on the ground floor, and we could hear some noise as people walked around upstairs, but it didn't disturb us very much. The location is great - right on the beach, with chairs available should you wish. I cant imagine there is any better location to stay. Our room appeared to have been recently refurbished, and there was a small kitchenette as well. Outside there was a pool, free parking, and a bar b q for use. We would consider returning here if we return to Sanibel,

Shalimar is on a nice part of Sanibel, and is literally just steps from the beach. We stayed in the motel and had great sunset views and ocean views from our room. You can hear the waves at night. I expected it to be a little noisy, but it was really quiet when we there. We rented bikes on site (Finnemores) and used them everyday. The bike path is right across the street and runs for miles. There's a restaurant two doors down you can walk to. Shelling on the beach was great. The beach is pretty flat in front of Shalimar, but I noticed big drop offs from sand erosion further down, where you would have to jump down to get near the water.
The cottages and motel have clothes lines, grills and shell washing tables. There are two washers and two dryers in the laundry room behind the office. Bring quarters for laundry, and the laundry detergent pods are easy to pack.
Baileys store is a short bike ride away, Tarpon Bay is close by.
Our room was clean and roomier than I expected. I liked the screened in porch. Our floor squeeked a bit. Parking is very convenient right next to motel. You can hose the sand off as you leave the beach. Never a problem getting a chair. Bring a lanyard for your room keys. Pool area was nice, they hosted a Friday night happy hour. We would definitely stay here again.

We've been staying at The Shalimar each year for more than 15 years, with our most recent visit early March, 2014. We absolutely love this place. It is "old Florida." It is attractive, clean, very friendly ... and right smack dab on the beach. In fact, we stay in Unit #1 of the motel building which is touted as the closest to the water you can get on the entire island--and it is. We walk out our door and we're on the beach. We've gotten to know some very wonderful people there over the years and one friend says, "This is a special place with many special people." The management is very friendly; in fact, they host a poolside reception each Friday for the guests. We look forward to our visit every year--and would stay no place other than The Shalimar on West Gulf.

Room Tip: All of the rooms are good rooms, but we opt for #1 because it is the closest to the beach ...

Was able to get an efficiency at the last minute here. Office staff friendly and helpful. While the bedroom was spacious and clean, the bath and kitchen areas were very worn. Both the bathroom sink & toilet tank lid had cracks...tiles worn. Biggest problem however, was that walls are not well insulated and coughs and conversations durng the night from the units on either side of us were audible. That being said, the location is prime, the view magnificent, but a cottage would eliminate listening your neighbors during the night. .

Room Tip: Try to get a cottage...
