We recently returned from our third annual visit to Shalimar. It’s now a tradition for us, although we are still rookies versus other guests whom we have met along the way with ten or more visits there.
The island clearly took a beating from Hurricane Irma. Piles of debris lay alongside the roads, and it may be some time before the cleanup is complete. That said, Shalimar was pristine, and the grounds and pool were immaculate.
We were fortunate to be in the cottage nearest the beach. Housekeeping is a hot button for Shalimar, and our cottage was immaculate as always. We delighted in leaving the windows open at nite and falling asleep to the sound of the surf. Only once were we distracted by noise from a nearby cottage porch, whose occupants could have been a bit more respectful of others. Otherwise, not a sound.
The beach was loaded with shells, and there was no evidence of storm damage. If anything, the shelling may have been better than previous years.
We made the usual 25-yard trek to the Sandbar Restaurant for a couple of great seafood meals during the week. In general, business at the various restaurants we visited seemed a bit depressed versus previous years, but not so at the Sandbar.
Once again, Shalimar was just exactly what we look for in a Florida getaway. Lord willin’, we be back next year.More
