“Old Florida Charm”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 March 2014 via mobile

Though the place retains the charm of what we call "0ld world Florida," the rooms and cottages have been renovated. We loved the layout of the property and enjoyed meeting a family who had been coming for years. No doubt, there are many as the place lends itself to families meeting up here from all over the country. peaceful, quiet atmosphere. Every staff person was friendly and helpful. We will be back!

The Island Inn definitely exceeded our expectations for a great wedding stay! My fiancé and I had a great time and the staff was so sweet and added many personal touches to make us feel special on our big day. Their newly remodeled Kimball House suites felt brand new and the view was killer! The restaurant, Traditions, is also very good. We can't wait to visit again for anniversaries in the future!

Spent last week at the Island Inn. Can not say enough good things about this place. Everything from the sunset view, to the friendly staff was perfect. Already have a week next March booked and can't wait.

Beautiful Location right on the beach. Hotel is old. They have done a decent job keeping it updated. Price was pretty outrageous, but with Sanibel limiting supply on the island with non-franchise rules this is inevitable. (Prices will be high and quality will be lower). I have stayed in some pretty amazing hotels for half the cost of the Island Inn. If you are staying on Sanibel with the limited options available I would recommend this hotel. Nothing to get excited about however.

Thank you for staying at the Island Inn and for taking the time to share your experience. I’m glad you enjoyed your overall stay and that you recommend the Island Inn to others.

For prospective Sanibel Island vacationers, we encourage folks to learn about Sanibel Island’s specific appeal (no chains, no stop lights, no buildings over 3 stories, low density beaches, seashells, etc.) and research all accommodation options to ensure the destination, accommodations and amenities are the best fit for their overall vacation expectations.

The location on the gulf beach was lovely, but we expected more of the decor, amenities, furnishings, grounds plantings and breakfast. We would have liked a second chair in the double room, something better than cheap plastic on the small lanai, airing of the musty drawers, a bit of cutlery in the efficiency kitchen, and some healthier breakfast choices. The staff, however, was friendly and accommodating. No fitness center or room service. There is a pool, volleyball court and shuffleboard.

Green Features: Though we hung up most towels, I think they were changed daily. Nice, but not so environmentally friendly.

This was our first trip to Sanibel Island, as it's somewhere my wife has wanted to visit, and we had been scheduled to make the trip in November 2012, and then we got caught up in the "unpleasantness" associated with Superstorm Sandy. Luckily we were able to unravel all of our travel plans without penalty, and this was the "make-up" trip. We had been booked into the West Wind Inn on our first attempt, but my wife switched us on Round 2, based on something . . . (reviews, spider sense tingling, etc.).

The Island Inn is located on Sanibel Island, off West Gulf Drive, and is pretty easily accessible after you come off the causeway from Fort Myers. As this was our first trip, we learned that at certain times, traffic on the island can sometimes be "congested" - although local law enforcement does a remarkably nice job of keeping things moving with "manual traffic direction" at major intersections, at peak times. That said, going to West Gulf Drive is made a much better experience by making a left turn off Periwinkle Way, onto Casa Ybel Road - which turns into West Gulf Drive.

The Island Inn has apparently been a property on Sanibel Island for a long time. You're greeted with a beautifully landscaped driveway, with Reception on your right and the Matthews Lodge immediately on your left. The Front Desk staff were very nice (genuinely nice), and checking-in was very quick and efficient. The exterior of the Matthews Lodge can be a little unsettling to guest by its initial outward appearance. In this instance, you're wise not to "judge a book by its cover", as the rooms and the rest of the other accommodations are really quite splendid. The rooms are as they appear in the professional photographs, and appear to have been renovated relatively recently, with all the facilities and furnishings in the room, in good condition, and very clean. There are no elevators in the Matthews Lodge, but it's only a single flight of stairs - but just a word to those with mobility issues.

Our room came with a kitchenette, which included a full stove, microwave, coffee maker (complimentary coffee), kitchen sink and a nice size refrigerator, and all the kitchen utensils you would need to fix any kind of simple or more elaborate meal (if you were actually so-inclined to do so while on vacation). We didn't have any issues with anything in our room, the kitchen or the bathroom during our stay, although setting the room thermostat to find the "sweet spot" on temperature and ambient fan noise level - was a brief challenge (which we solved successfully).

The rest of the property is very well-maintained, with an very spacious center courtyard, which while just sand, is very open and with nice trees and landscaping. The pool is very nice and clean (and heated), and the beach is just a very short walk - and you're allowed to take the resort's chairs/lounges down to the beach (just bring them back . . . ). And the weather cooperated (warm) during our time there. The property is remarkably dark at night, with minimal light. While we never felt "un-safe", a trip down to the beach at night was made much easier by the Mini-Maglite flashlight I always bring on trips.

We only ate on the Island Inn property once, splurging on a shrimp cocktail ("to-go") from The Traditions restaurant. The shrimp were good, as was the cocktail sauce, although a smaller size shrimp (below Jumbo), might be a better idea for the restaurant to experiment with as even when cooked properly, Jumbo shrimp can sometimes be tougher than what is desirable in a shrimp cocktail. Just a suggestion.

As is often the case in any lodging experience, the staff are sometimes "make or break" for the guests. The staff we encountered were all properly trained on the "make" side of the equation, and were all great, friendly (genuinely friendly) and helpful - whether that was the front desk staff, or Anna, from Housekeeping (yes, she made the effort to introduce herself to us). Nice touch Anna! For a February, the property seemed very quiet and "un-crowded" (which was exactly what we were looking for . . .), and we're already considering a return trip - perhaps in November (when reportedly, it's even less crowded - Yikes!). This was a very good experience.

Room Tip: Most, if not all rooms have ocean views, but a second floor room probably provides better views, mor...

We have just returned from our first trip to Sanibel Island and the Island Inn. WOW! From the front desk staff to the cleaning and maintenance crew....this place was top notch. It was clean and inviting. Not sure if and when we will return to Sanibel, but if we do the Island Inn is the only place we would pick to stay. Thanks!

Room Tip: The Kimball Lodge is beautiful...recently updated in November 2013. Room 267, facing west, was nice...
