We LOVE Mitchell's Sand Castles! Spent a week there in March/April and we can not say enough good about it. Joel is awesome. He and his staff are incredibly nice and really want everyone to have a good time. The location is great - literally steps away from a beautiful beach. This is not a 5 star resort and it doesn't claim to be; it is a low-key community of comfortable, well-appointed cottages that sit amongst beautiful gulf-front homes. We stayed in Sand Piper and it was perfect - had everything we needed including a fully stocked kitchen with coffee maker (and filters), toaster, and blender. (Tip: bring a hair dryer and beach towels.) It was clean and nicely decorated and the beds were comfortable. When we needed new towels we put them out in a basket in the morning and some were returned later in the day. Our young boys loved the pools which were well stocked with towels and pool toys. Our dogs had a great time too and we are thankful for their pet-friendly policy. The majority of the guests we met were really kind and on a return visit because they liked it so much. We are booked again for next year. I relied on Trip Advisor when we planned this trip so I thought it was important to give back and provide my opinion here. Go if you can and I hope you enjoy it as much as we did.

We recently finished our second stay at Mitchell's--a small family reunion in Ocean Mist--and it was just as good as when we visited here the first time two winters ago. The resort is right on the beach and within easy driving distance of Ding Darling and Bailey's, the local supermarket. You could also take one of the bikes Mitchell's loans free to its guests to either location. Our cottage was right on the beach, and was clean, well-stocked with supplies, and outfitted with decent wifi and cable TV, though we didn't use the latter much. Apart from bicycles, the resort also supplies kayaks, beach chairs and umbrellas and towels at both of its pools, all at no extra charge. The staff is unobtrusive, but their work shows--the place is well-maintained and neatly kept. I've only been to Sanibel three times, twice now at Mitchell's and once at another cottage compound closer to Captiva. I would come back to this place in a minute. The resort bills itself as "old Florida". I'm not sure exactly what that means, but if it means very laid back, informal and relaxed, Mitchell's has nailed it.

Room Tip: Make your reservations well in advance. This place sells out quickly.

We had a lovely visit in cabin #1 on the gulf. It was great to have two pools, as well as bikes, kayaks, umbrellas, and beach chairs. Very convenient. Our family of five was comfortable in the cabin and loved being right on the beach. Quiet location so there weren't too many crowds, but convenient enough to the stores.

Perfect place to escape the winter blues. Most places have great ocean view and many have screened in porches-a necessity if you want to avoid bites from the "no see um" insects. Two very nice pools on the property to enjoy. Cottages are older but clean and comfortable. All units have Weber charcoal grill. Our only complaint was the sheets-clean but had been used too many times and were "nubby" and not comfortable to sleep on. The location is in a very quiet area with limited traffic

Cottage #9 has become my favorite place within Mitchell's Sandcastles, on my favorite end of my favorite Sanibel Island. Peace, quiet, shells galore and even an osprey in the pine out back. Comfortable beds with plenty of space to spread out - and a wonderful lounge chair on the private deck - that comes complete with an umbrella'd table. And don't forget the pools!! We made our return reservations before we even left! Highly recommended and still my favorite place since the 70s.

Room Tip: any one in the complex has a wonderful view of the Gulf

Stayed countless times on Sanibel and always look for small properties as just the 2 of us and we like to be as close to the beach as possible whilst having peace and quiet.

This is our first stay at Mitchell's and we were very pleased we had chosen Sea Grape Cottage as it only takes 2 and has a wonderful view of the sea from the screened porch (another must have as far as we are concerned).

The internet pictures of Sea Grape are very accurate - it is small and wood is very much in evidence. No dishwasher unfortunately (no room for one really). Only criticisms of the accommodation are that we found the bed a bit too soft and the bed is pushed up against a wall on one side so one of you has to clamber up or over the bed to get into it. Fine for us but anyone with any form of mobility problem would not find it fun. Another consequence of this is there is only a bedside table or one side which is really annoying. This could be easily remedied by not having a huge 3 seater settee replace this with a 2 seater and have a small table each side with room on bothy sides to get into bed.

Although attached on both sides to other cottages we were not disturbed at all by noise from adjoining units which was really good.

It is great that beach chairs and an umbrella are provided to you for your personal use for the duration of your stay (but bring your own umbrella anchor - you will need one). There was a pleasantly warm pool and although pool towels are provided none were available by the pool when we used it and when I asked for one I was happily given one but the stock by the pool was not replenished.

One unusual item provided was free use of kayaks which I really enjoyed using - great fun and very stable with life vests provided (just make sure your holiday insurance covers their use - I found I had to pay a small extra amount for each day I planned to use a kayak.

A lovely clean beach in front of this resort and really quiet as surrounded mainly by expensive beach homes. Saw dolphins galore every day and manatees on 3 occasions (that was a surprise).

Would we stay again - yes - although quite expensive for the size of the accommodation but I suppose you are paying for the location.

Room Tip: If just 2 of you definitely go for Sea Grape but you will need to book early.

We just returned from our 2nd stay at Mitchell's, and have already signed up to return same time next year. My husband and I have a 2.5 year old, and she absolutely loves it. The 2 pools are wonderful, with lots of pool toys, and we often had one of the pools to ourselves. The beach is large and filled with shells, and the sunsets are just beautiful - all things that are very attractive to a toddler. There are bikes (with child seats and child helmets!) for use, free of charge, which is fantastic when your activities are limited with a young child. We stayed in #6, which is spacious with a private and inviting outdoor space. The unit has everything we needed, including pots/pans, dishes & cutlery and great wine glasses. We used the unit's outdoor grill many nights. One thing - there is no hair dryer, so if you can not be without one, remember to bring your own. The other guests were warm and friendly, and many told us that they have been returning to Mitchell's for years. From what I can tell, Mitchell's is also a great destination for friends, larger families and couples, and it was perfect for us. Joel and the staff are wonderful and always helpful.

Room Tip: #6 does not have a gulf view, but it has a king size bed & queen sleeper in the living room. It...
