Air boat tour is worth the trip. Also treetop walk was neat. Great gift shop. Wildlife was plentiful. Our Grandkids loved it...

“Still real Florida nature after all these years...”
Reviewed 7 July 2014

I have reviewed this place 2 or 3 times before - I've come here since the last century (plus a few decades) and always enjoy the opportunities to appreciate nature as it exists on its own. I'm an avid photographer, also a hobby I've indulged here for many years. I used to walk trails and listen for the land animals, and then grew more interested in the birds and gators. They're all there, along with reminders to be safe (gators and vultures) and lawful. Don't offer or become the gators dinner! It's safe for accompanied children.

This is the first time I've ever explored Myakka in June/July. I sought images and oddities and beauty walking behind the old Outpost, watching the vultures descend upon the picnic tables, as an alligator seems to clear his throat.

Anyway, there are rivers for kayaking, hiking and walking trails, campsites and cabins which can be rented, permits for outer trails, the quaint commissary (which used to sell alligator chowder). And now I replaced my old Myakka hat to learn about an organization (Friends) who are working to maintain the park services and offerings.

There is the long-time favorite attraction, the Gator Gal (a fan-propelled swamp buggy) and also a trolley tour, the latter of which may be nice for those for whom long walks are not possible.

It's a huge amount of acreage, donated long ago to the state as a nature preserve and state park, and for me, one of the places I could visit every week. I have not been here in early summer before. The rangers note the prevalence of roseate spoonbills, though they were somewhat sparse the day I visited, with more blue herons, huge alligators, and a big vulture convention at dusk.

“Very peaceful”
Reviewed 5 July 2014

This park is everything you need for a nice relaxing day or weekend. The day was very hot so wildlife was scarce but we did manage to see a little group of 3 deer. There are nice campsites bikes and kayaks to rent and airboat and trolley rides. Also a cafe with a large selection of beers and snacks and a variety of gift items.

“A Quiet Activity with Much to be Seen”
Reviewed 4 July 2014

The Myakka River State Park experience is one which is quiet but alive with possibilities for observing wildlife, pleasant hiking, photographic opportunities, exercise and just pleasant non-structured family being together time. There is so much to observe within the park: birds, deer, gators, vegetation and wetlands, that a slower pace might be a preferable option. The airboat ride, enhanced by the ranger led explanation of the surroundings, certainly adds a great deal to this peaceful, educational and enjoyable time. Also, the brochures available at the gate are very helpful in explaining the observable surroundings and also serve as wonderful reminders of time well spent.

“Lovely laid back park”
Reviewed 4 July 2014

Well worth a visit if you're in the Sarasota area. Unspoilt and not too commercialised. Fees are reasonable and staff are very pleasant and knowledgeable. Although didn't see many gators it was later in the day. The best bit was the tree top canopy walk, amazing views from the top of the tower. Saw wild deer as we were leaving. A lovely way to spend a few hours away from the roads and cities.
