“Love this place!”
Reviewed 1 November 2012

I have been going to the Sands for my entire life and can't imagine staying anywhere else. Everyone is always friendly, and each time we go back it's so hard to leave. It is like a second home and we love it! Heading there tomorrow, can't wait to see what's new from the last visit in 2010! Only thing I wish was that our unit had 2 bedrooms so we didn't have to sleep on a pull out couch in the living room or on two separate sofas in the 'adjacent' room since my parents get the regular bed!

We've visited Sarasota Sands 18 times in the last 23 years, but this was our first visit back in the last 5. The resort is located at the very end of Lido key, the last hotel before South Lido Park. It is literally right on the beach, and depending on the unit you rent, you are barely steps away from the Gulf of Mexico and beautiful white sand. The resort is not new, it is made up of several converted hotels. So, while is isn't fancy, it is comfortable, clean, and a good value.
This is a timeshare property, so many guests are regulars that have gone there for years. It's apparent that the management has changed for the better since our last visit. Updated appliances and tvs in the units, more guest interactive activities (such as coffee groups, catered "lunch" -burgers & dogs w/chips & sodas- twice a week). The office and grounds staff have improved over the prior staff, and were a pleasure to deal with. The resort has a game room on the top floor of the end building with a pool table, foosball, board games, and pinball machines. There is a small workout room on the ground floor with an eliptical machine, treadmill, and free weights. There is also a suana and hot tub room on the ground floor of the end building. One nice change from prior years; anybody with a room key could get into those rooms, resulting in unattended kids using them. Now you have to request a key at the front desk, which helps keep that problem down to a minimum annoyance.
Here's a few recommendations based on our multiple experiences with this resort:
Look at the resort map before booking if possible. Units near the pool can be very loud due to the activity at the pool up to 10pm. The closer you can get to the beach, the quieter your stay will be.
Unless you absolutely have to get one of the efficiency units, don't. They are extremely small with minimal appliances (dorm size fridge/two burner cooktop).
Be prepared to buy bottled water, the taste of tap water may not be to your liking. But, you can refill a gallon water jug at a special filtered water fountain in the sauna room, so get at least one at the grocery store when you shop.
Speaking of shopping: the grocery stores are not close and are very crowded on Saturdays and Sundays.
St Armands Circle is a short drive (or longish bike ride) away. There are terrific resturants and shops there. Can get very crowded, but great for people watching from a sidewalk cafe table.
After having been away for 5 years, we were very pleased with our stay. We will not wait 5 years to go to Sarasota Sands again!

Room Tip: Units in the Dockside and end of the Sailmaster buildings are the best for more quiet evenings.

I was just there last week and am trying to go back next week! This resort is not fancy but it is very clean, the beach location is perfect, and the staff is very nice. There's someone in the office 24/7 which is nice. We stayed in the quarterdeck unit which is a kingsize bed, 2 pull-out sectional sofas, full kitchen, 2 separate rooms for tv/ lounging, and the best part of all = 2 bathrooms!! It's basically 2 hotel rooms made into 1 unit. The bed was super comfy. This resort is very family friendly. It's only 50 steps to the beach, which is why we went. Northern part of Lido is very crowded whereas this resort is on the end so not it's crowded. The bus picks up every 30 minutes for a mere $1.25... Downtown Sarasota is great= alot to do. St. Armand's is nice but very $$$.

Room Tip: Even though the quarterdeck does sleep 6, and does have doors separating the sleeping areas; if trav...

Stay during week of July 4th. We stayed in a two bathroom unit with seven guests. Toilet broke on one side of the unit. Manager's answer was to use other bathroom. He did not consider eight people using one toilet an emergency and refused to call a plumber until the following day. We are owners, I wonder how renters are treated.

Room Tip: Will consider selling our unit!

The plumbers were called but they were not able to come the same night to fix a toilet, which it was not considered a true emergency for them since they had two bathrooms in the unit. We apologized but they wanted the toilet fix that night, which was actually clogged by them.

The Sarasota Sands Resort presents as a converted motel; that said the unit was spacious, clean and well kept. The one bedroom we stayed in had two baths which proved to be a plus. There is a great pool and the walk to the beach is less than a minute. The negative of this resort is you are nickled and dimed for small things. Two dollars an hour to rent bicycles in very poor condition, two dollars a day for a beach chair or umbrella (these could be rented for ten dollars a week each), if you wanted to wash your car; five dollars. The most infuriating problem is this is a beach resort that does not provide towels for the beach. You can buy a towel in their store for $19.99. Other than that issue if you want to stay on the beach and don't need a gold crown resort this is a great place.

Stayed the last week of September with a friend who is an "owner". Our condo was the penthouse suite. Large, clean, spectacular view from the lanai (windows from floor to ceiling). Easily sleeps 6-8 people. The rooms while super clean really need updating. The master bedroom has mirrors practically everywhere (mirrored headboard even). Only had one interaction with front desk staff. She didn't come across super friendly.

Other owners were older than we are, but that meant no late night drunken parties to contend with.

Overall, great place to stay- great access to the beach, lots of fine dining and shopping boutiques close by.

I have grown up going to Sarasota Sands every November. It is an absolutely amazing location at the tip of Lido Beach. Extremely quiet and semi-private beach. The units are older, but don't let that deter you. It is very well kept and upgrades occur to units every year. It is a fabulous spot that I will continue to visit every year as long as I can.
