“An outstanding opera for a small city”
Reviewed 30 March 2014

I subscribe to the Sarasota Opera, so clearly I think it's great. We are so fortunate to have such a high-quality opera available to us in a city of this size. My only complaint is that the winter opera season is so short that in order to subscribe, one must see an opera each week for four weeks, rather than over a longer period of time. However, that is a small price for having such a gem available to us.

“Sarasota Opera - Top Class”
Reviewed 30 March 2014

The Sarasota Opera presents about 4 or 5 different opera productions each season, which extends from December to April. For the past few decades they have been engaged in a cycle to present every opera by Verdi, but other operas are also included in each season's schedule. We saw a performance of Verdi's Il Trovatore. The production was first rate with an excellent orchestra and singers. Good production values in terms of costumes; scenery was effective, but not quite what one would see at the Met in New York. The Sarasota Opera house is a real gem. It seats less than 1200 people so all of the seats in the house have a good view. The building dates from the '20s but it has been very extensively modernized and is both opulent and comfortable. The location in downtown Sarasota is within walking distance of numerous restaurants. (These seem to get crowded in early evening so perhaps reservations would be a good idea.) Also, there is a large parking garage around the corner from the opera house and parking is free! in the evening. If you are visiting the area or nearby Tampa/St. Pete a visit to the Sarasota Opera is very worthwhile.

“Good Productions From Small Established Opera Company”
Reviewed 29 March 2014

This is a seasonal repertory opera, now in session for about 30 years, located by the bay in downtown Sarasota. It's focus is on traditional presentation. The cast is mostly young but the direction and conducting is superb. Generally there are 4 operas rotating in the winter and one in the fall. There are also apprentice and studio recitals at a much lower cost than the fully staged opera. There's an on-site box office open during daytime hours. You can hear well from anywhere in the concert hall but some visuals might be blocked from side balcony seats. Dress is casual though some followers prefer to snazz it up a bit.

“See four different operas on four consecutive days”
Reviewed 28 March 2014

We visited Sarasota primarily to take in the opera. We were very pleased with the performances we saw: Flying Dutchman, Jerusalem, Barber of Seville, and Il Trovatore. they use young (read "cheap") singers, all of whom were competent and several of whom we'd love to hear again. Another reason they can get away without the big expensive stars is that the theater is small--probably seats 1,000--so they can get by without the huge voices that are necessary in houses like the 4,000-seat Met. It's a charming theater right downtown with a stage that is small and shallow, so when their chorus members (all 20 or them) are onstage with the principals, it's a bit of a traffic jam. The opera house even has free valet parking! Of course you tip the valets, but that's nothing when you can pull up in front of the opera house and walk right in. Anyway, we're definitely considering returning next year.
