Owner description: When course designer Mark Alden was charged with the Serenoa Golf Club project he obviously set out to design a course unlike the typical Sarasota golf course. His vision combined with the existing wetlands & natural lay-of-the-land to create a masterpiece that Florida Golf News calls one of the top 100 courses in Florida and one of the top three in Sarasota! What Alden did was to take the rubberstamp Florida golf course and throw it to the wind. He took the short 6270-yard layout and made it play more like 7200 by bringing water into play on almost every hole - creating a true shot-maker`s course! So forget the usual tee-shot between two bunkers to a slightly elevated green guarded by two bunkers - the typical Sarasota course - and welcome the variety and stiff challenge of Serenoa Golf Club.

This course was difficult and long. We had a tee time for 10:00, the price was reasonable. We got breakfast and lunch which was included in the price. People were very friendly, the course was in good shape, just two greens were messed up a little. Good golf day

Had many happy memories of a beautiful golf course, played in 1998, and returned today in anticipation of an enjoyable afternoon. However this was to be far from reality as the Greens were totally covered in pitch marks and tees full of divots, evodence of drainage non existent, condition generally untidy and unfortunately too many people being piled onto the course. For example we booked a two-ball at 12.04. The starter had us down as a four-ball and the same time was given to a three-ball, all causing much confusion and delay and resulting in a queue at the 1st hole and a unnecessary backlog thereafter. Before leaving the clubhouse for the 1st tee at 12 noon we overheard a golfer telling his partner that they could get a tee time of 2.30pm to which his partner asked how they would be able to complete a round before darkness fell at 5.30pm. Just a case of collect the fees and pile them out regardless. Due to an inflated opinion of their ability, guys playing from the back tees were continually hitting two balls off the tee because they were spraying the balls everywhere, causing lengthy delays and resulting in a very frustrated four and a quarter hour round. At no time was there evidence of a course ranger/adviser.

Could we suggest that the starter advises that the colour of the flags denotes the position of the hole on the green. Perhaps reference could even be displayed on the cart.

An experience NEVER TO BE REPEATED!!!!!

This course is decent and challenging track. Many holes are narrow and tricky, with lots of places to get in trouble. Your tee shot requires some control but if your in the middle, your rewarded with ok but quick greens, many elevated with sloping sides. You may decide to use 3 woods off many tees if your playing the middle tees.
The practice facility is ok, small, with one practice green good for about 4 players at once. There are seldom carts available mid day. You wait and hope, and pray the refreshed cart makes it through your round. We lost one in our groups, Seldom if ever do you see a ranger to prompt quicker play especially on the first 5 holes. I would go back but only if I can get a good rate.

We knew we were in trouble when we overheard the Starter describe the greens as S****y. Like putting on bad asphalt. Bumpy with lots of bare spots. Tees just as bad with fairways marginally better. Rough nothing but hard dirt. Pace of play not bad on front nine but back nine a different story since Starter was squeezing groups in on #10 between groups coming off #9. By 11th hole backed up two groups. Took almost 3 hours to play back nine. Their lunch and two sodas or beers is a scam. We were told we could get our drinks and sandwiches either on the course from the cart girl or in the snack shop. When we attempted to order from cart girl we were told we could only get a half of sandwich and one drink from her and if we wanted the full sandwich and two drinks we had to get it from the snack bar. Oh, and watch out for holes in the rough that aren't marked. Lucky no one in our group broke an ankle after stepping in one on #9. Sitting here right now with ice on my ankle while writing this. Lots of nicer places to play for the money. By far worst course we played in area.

This is one of those courses that packs them in. This was my first exerience here and I wasn't impressed. Course is decent but nothing exciting. Staff generally unfriendly. But what frosted me was the 5 hour round after we teed off 20 minutes after our scheduled time. The pace was dreadful with a lot of snowbirds who should have been on a driving range. The few rangers did nothing to improve the pace.
Rates are favorable and include lunch in the afternoon (breakfast in the morning) and the coupon could be used with the beverage cart but we didn't see that until 4:00.
Too many other choices in the area to put up with this.
