“Great Location on Lido Key”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 April 2009

We stayed at this Holiday Inn using points for two nights. The location of this hotel is terrific within about a 5 minute walk from St. Armand's Circle. Considering how difficult it is to park anywhere near St. Armand's Circle or the beach on the weekends, being able to park at the hotel and walk was nice. The hotel is located directly across a two lane road from Lido Beach. The road isn't very busy and is easy to cross. Lido is relatively quiet compared to some other beaches along the west coast especially on weekdays. The hotel provides free beach chairs and towels to take out to the beach (first come, first serve). It's a nice extra. We were upgraded to a gulf front room upon our arrival. The room is a decent size and includes a 27" TV, table and chairs, coffee maker. No refrigerator in the room. There are some plastic chairs on the balcony which is a nice spot to enjoy the sunset. Housekeeping was very good. Room decor wasn't anything upscale, but appropriate for the setting. Free high speed internet service is included. I would stay here again.

The Holiday Inn Lido Beach is a fine hotel that should be much better. The location is excellent--across the street from a gorgeous white sand beach and an easy four-block walk to St. Armands Circle (which offers dining, drinking, and shopping activities.) (Be aware that St. Armands Circle isn't much of a nightlife area--the cab driver told us "they roll up the sidewalks at 10 pm" and he was right!)

The rooms at the Holiday Inn Lido Beach were comfortable and clean. I also felt service was very attentive at the Front Desk.

The gripes I have are that the place feels dated--furniture is worn and the interior design has an 80s feel to it.

The poolside bar is a mess--unattractive, small, and operated as if it's an afterthought. Service was slow and people would back up waiting for the one bartender to catch up. (In the one afternoon I spent at the pool, I'd guess the hotel could've made $400 in additional drinks with an extra staff member or two. People simply got tired of waiting or went into the hotel for soda from the vending machines.)

Food in the hotel was not very good, and the hours of service are strange. Breakfast stops being served at 10 am, and room service is not available for most of the day. Luckily, the restaurants of St. Armands Circle aren't that far away, but I was left feeling the place really didn't give much though to the food and beverage needs and expectations of their lodgers.

If you are seeking a nice beachside hotel, this is a fine option. The next time I stay in the area, however, I might try to find a more contemporary, updated, and comfortable place with a much better selection of food and beverage services.

Location is the best part of this hotel, but we found the accommodations very outdated. For the price they are charging they should remodel. Also they need an water purifier. The water had a very strong sulfur smell. As for the restaurant it was nothing special food wise but it had a beautiful view. They should put more into it it could really be nice. I would recommend it if it was cheaper.

It's all a matter of one's priorities... We wanted to be at the beach, and within walking distance to St. Armand's Circle. Having been to the circle previously, we knew how horrendous the traffic and parking can be. We also love Florida's Gulf beaches, and although we had never been past the circle to Lido Key, we found it to be a beautiful beach.

The hotel itself was just fine. The rate was reasonable, the entire facility was clean, the rooms were spacious with comfortable beds, and the staff were all courteous; and isn't that all of the important criteria when judging a hotel?

There were some VERY nice resorts further down the beach, but they lacked the proximity to walk to the circle.

The location, comfort, and hospitality we found here suited our need perfectly.

I have to admit, I was never too keen on Holiday Inn. I like to be a bit more pampered, but my budget is leaning more Holiday Inn these days. Wow! We were so pleasantly surprised by this lovely hotel. It sits across a palm lined boulevard from the Gulf and the beach is not crowded at all! I read the other reviews and some mentioned the street between the hotel and beach.Don't worry about having to cross the street to the lovely beach. No biggie!! Yes there are fine chairs and towels you get for free. I'd sign up earlier in the day for chairs if it is a busy weekend just to assure you get one. DO spend the extra to get a gulf front room. It is a jaw dropping view. Ask for a higher floor if you can. We started out on the second floor and it was ok but we asked and they moved us up to 5th. Big difference. The other thing we loved is the location. You are a 5 minute walk to St Armand's circle where you will find tons of great shops and dining. We did not eat at the hotel but had breakfast at a great old fashioned storefront diner called the Blue Dolphin on the circle and at another very nice spot called Cafe Galante which is upstairs above the Columbia Restaurant. You can sit along the railing for an outdoor breakfast. It was delicious. They have lunch too. While we were there, the St Armands Circle hosted an outside jazz concert one evening and that was fun too.

Right across the street from the beach-we had a room that over looked the beach. It's within walking distance of St. Armands shopping district. Front desk staff was helpful-there were a couple of people working that weren't the world's friendliest but they were efficient. The room was clean-not the newest room-but quite nice. This area seems to be where the very rich retire or spend the summer months, but if you're expecting that kind of elegance this is not your hotel. It's just a great, comfortable place to stay at the beach. We didn't make to the restaurant-too many choices on St. Armands. Go 2 miles west onto Longboat Key and try the Dry Dock-very good. Also there's a little wine bistro on st. Armands that was very good and had quite a nice wine by the glass list.

We stayed at this hotel for 10 nights and must say that the negative comments we read prior to our departure to the States were a bit surprising. The reception staff were very pleasant and helpful and nothing was too much trouble for them. We had booked and got a gulf view room which was a good size and comfortable. The balcony did overlook the road, but as previous guests have stated, it was a very quiet road so did not pose a problem. The walks around the hotel were super, along to the right from the hotel to North Lido Key, and to the left to South Lido Park which offered numerous walks of varying lengths. Herons, racoons, squirrels, egrets, ospreys, dolphins and various seabirds were all to be seen along the coastline and in the park, which also offers picnic areas and very clean public toilets !
However, back to the hotel. The buffet breakfasts were of good quality and quantity, although if only a small amount is wanted in the morning, could prove expensive.. The Blue Dolphin Cafe certainly offers large quantities, but too much for our needs. The evening meals in the penthouse Sand Dollar Restaurant were good and we must disagree with the contributor who said that the food was poor. The Twilight Dinners were good value and the same proportions as served at any other time. The downside is that you must remember that the Florida Tax is added, as is the 20% gratuity for service. This automatic inclusion of the gratuity is something that most non Americans dislike as we tend to want to pay for the service we did, or did not receive. St Armands Circle, about a 5/10 minute walk, is a very pleasant place to walk around, but it is a very expensive area in which to eat ( again once all the taxes have been added ). There are no convenience stores or supermarkets in the area, but if like us, you do not have a car, you can take the 4 bus ( flat rate of 75 cents each way) to Downtown terminus where there is an Organic Whole Foods Store right there, and you can purchase various items to be consumed in the room .....like wine ! We were fortunate enough to have been given a cool box to use in our room by friends, as the daily rate for renting a fridge from the hotel is $10. There are ice machines located throughout the hotel which means drinks etc can be chilled easily. We bought various items for breakfast latterly as we did not want to eat much in the morning, and also bought wine to drink before and with our evening meal, courtesy of room service, whilst sitting on the balcony looking at the magnificent sunsets. We found that room service for us was good as we had our own wine and therefore the cost was vastly reduced . The pool area was fine and the water was heated. Koconuts( yes, the spelling is correct ! ) bar is at the pool where lunches/snacks can be purchased and consumed. The hotel also has a self service laundry room and there is an iron & board in your bedroom. Guests have the use of free internet access on a computer in the foyer which proved very convenient. All in all we had a very pleasant stay, but must agree...not a luxury hotel, but adequate for our needs and VERY clean.

  • Liked — The huge bed & the wonderful sunsets viewed from our balcony
  • Disliked — Taxes !
