“Gulf of Mexico View is Beautiful”
Reviewed 8 October 2009

For our 28th wedding anniversary we wanted to relax on the beach. The Helmsley Sandcastle on Lido beach was the perfect place. We requested a king room with a view of the ocean. We loved it . The sand is white and the water temp. even in Oct. felt like bath water. We did share the balcony , but no problems whatsoever. We would stay again. Wonderful!!

We were in town for a sailing regatta and a lot of the folks were staying at this hotel. I had always avoided these old Florida right on the beach hotels - but what a pleasant surprise. For the price, this was a great value. We had a room overlooking the ocean. Rooms were good size, but your standard older hotel room. Inside the courtyard was a lot of activities, nice pools, good food, friendly bar. The beach is uncrowned and pristine and with all of the shopping and restaurants just a two or three minute drive away this is a great place to stay. Downtown Sarasota is about a 10 - 15 minute drive. You really feel like "old Florida" staying here. It was the holiday weekend and booked and it did not seem crowded at all.

Property consists of several buildings of different ages located on the same property. Property is older but attractive and in pretty good shape-in fact our pool view room (which had no real pool view because of plants) had just had new carpeting installed. Two pools, shuffleboard area, ping-pong table, exercise room, pool-side tiki bar, two restaurants (one for breakfast and lunch, and a more formal one for dinner), plus an alfresco dining option, an enclosed parking garage (free parking, which was an unexpected bonus) and direct beach access.

Beach accessories (umbrellas and the like) had a daily rental fee. Our room had two twin beds, one was nice and firm, while the other was too soft. Pillows were plentiful but cheap foam. Excellent A/C. The room had a very feminine feel, with four mirrors-an enormous one over the desk, a large one in the bathroom, a full-length on the bathroom door, and a pull-out magnifying one next to the sink. Speaking of bathrooms, the bath/commode area was very small-one had to enter, then pirouette around to close the door and/or sit down. The shower was excellent-very invigorating. The room contained a complimentary safe. Good variety of cable channels on TV. Five bar cell phone reception on T-Mobile.

We ate 2 breakfasts and 1 lunch on-site. Food was OK (3-4 stars out of 5) but a little pricey.

The big negative for me was Internet access. Three options existed: In-room wireless at $7.95 per day(!), a single PC and printer in the lobby that charged by the minute, and ‘free’ wireless in the lobby. But you better have a small laptop with a good battery to use the free access, as the lobby had no usable tables and no available electrical outlets.

Overall, we would be glad to return.

You really never know what to expect when you read these reviews and we are all wired differently when it comes to expectations and likes and dislikes. I don't travel for a living so I'm a no fuss, no frill kind of person. When I leave for vacation all I want to do is relax. The Helmsley met all of our expecations and then some. It is an older establishment but well maintained. The rooms are smaller but very, very clean. The pools are great as are the beach chairs and umbrella's. I fully expected to see those notorious Florida bugs that I've read so much about. I didn't see one in the six days I was there.

The front desk staff was awesome.....they are courteous, gracious and always greeted us with a smile on their faces. We had originally booked a poolside room and ended up moving to a oceanfront room....it was incredible....we didn't miss a sunset and hearing the ocean at night was AMAZING! We ate breakfast at their restaurant; the food was good, the staff was friendly and I loved that the gratuity was included...it made things so much easier.

St. Armands has a great selection of everything.....we walked the beach every morning (it takes about 15 minutes at a brisk pace) and had our coffee at St. Armands. There's also sidewalk if you prefer to walk non-ocean side.

I will definitely return to Lido Key again and the Helmsley will be our choice of accommodations. They earned my trust and there were no disappointments.

I read the reviews on the hotel and yes it is a little dated compared to some, but it's a great locaton on a a lovely stretch of beach only 5 minutes from Almand Circle.

The room we had was overlooking a courtyard and was clean, spacious. The maids we excellent and always replaced our sheets and towels.

Our only complaint was that the staff didn't really seem that interested, tips were automatically added to EVERYTHING and they didn't go out of their way and a smile would have cracked most faces, don't get me wrong they weren't rude, but not at all what we were used to and a disappointment.

One must are the sunsets, as the light fades, the dolphins and pelican are feeding in the sea and is a must for all.

We had a holiday at the helmsley, we had 5 rooms and 11 family members, it was a beautiful place near to the beach, the staff are amazing. We had a problem that one of family members where rushed into hospital a few days after we arrived, all the staff where helpful , kind and understanding, we had a lovely maid who really made us welcome, all the rooms where clean and tidy . All the staff encluding the hotel shop and resturant are great and friendly, We will be coming back to the Helmsey.

The Helmsley has a perfect location on Lido Key. The rooms are okay, my only complain is why carpet? They have two pools, we never used because if we traveled that far we were going to enjoy the beach!. The breakfast buffet is fairly priced and good. Armands circle is close, Siesta beach, and Longboat key, you do need a car. We flew into Tampa and the ride to Sarasota is very close. Coquina Beach on Santa Maria Island is the best the water, and the location old world. We celebrated my husband's 55th birthday and can't wait to go back. This is a wonderful place to relax my teenage son and nephew both 15 really enjoyed this trip. The Helmsley is a great place to be, I even printed my airline tickets for free ! Its not a 5 star hotel but it is very convinient and their prices are hard to beat and you have also free parking most hotels charge you for the parking!!!
