My family and I have been to beaches in all regions on Florida. This is by far the best. You get the white powder sand of Destin without being to crowded because of how deep it is.

Depends what kind of beach you like, I guess. Rated #1 beach in North America, while the sand is a beautiful, white, soft powder, and sea shells LITTER the shores - and the water is pristinely clear - if you're an adventure bum, this will not do it for you. I would recommend it for beach combers or those literal beach bums who only come to the beach to sit. Temperature of the water is comparable to a tepid bath - which isn't necessarily a bad thing. If you're one of those people who enjoy water sports, boogie boarding etc - or have small kids who like waves and tube riding - this isn't the place. Our kids got bored within thirty minutes of being here (consider we'd just come from Daytona which is a GREAT beach) - even with their snorkel gear. To find a hotel etc around the area is also difficult because most of it is timeshare, and there really aren't that many properties along the beach. Overall….didn't suit the upbeat lifestyle of our family (4 younger children)…was awesome to go and see to say we've been, but it's unlikely we'll be going back.

I LOVE coming to Siesta Key Beach, truly a revelation for someone who grew up on Long Island, NY. The snow white quartz sand will NOT burn your feet, no matter the temp. It is as fine as extra fine sugar (not confectioners, but close) and can be made into marvelous "drip castles" as my kids called them. The parking is very close, the restrooms are clean, the ice cream is great, there are showers at each boardwalk crossover, so you can rinse the sand off before the parking lot. Snack bar closes earlt at 5, but that's my only complaint.

My parents retired in Sarasota and would go each morning to Siesta Key Beach for a walk and a
swim from 10 am to 12 noon. It is one of the best features in Sarasota which appeals to all tourists. You must arrive to obtain good parking early before 9 am or you will be waiting at least
15 - 20 minutes. It is enjoyable for all ages. If you visit Sarasota, you need to come to Siesta Key
Beach. Number One!

I've been coming here for years, and think I've reviewed it before, but not within the last year. Revisited today, and it's just as lovely (and slightly less crowded). Now, late November the water temp was 72 (F), clean, and the sand was beautiful. Water a bit chilly as it can be this time of year. Walking along knee-high I felt something I didn't see at first, but it was 'needle fish' swimming into me. (They're like jumbo minnows, named for their shape, totally harmless.)

Sometimes this public beach is totally jammed up in the parking lot, cars circling and unable to find a spot. Today wasn't too bad, but it's a slow week just before Thanksgiving, and a bit chilly water temp, and breezy. Snow cones and home-made ice-cream, volleyball nets and various rentals mostly unused today, no parasailing overhead as is often typical of a warm beach day "in season". Just a few waterboards and paddle ball players.

Something new I noticed (and see reviewed elsewhere under Siesta Key) was a colorful Free Siesta Key shuttle buggie, with a Facebook logo on a fender, and a sign saying they work for tips.
I guess that's an alternative for anyone staying further up the key who doesn't want to hike, bike, or compete for a parking space. Anyway it's there.

As for the beach and why it is called America's #1 beach - it's not for a boardwalk or 'developed' attractions that this beach is top-rated, it's the sand. White talcum-like powder. It's been declared the 'purest'/finest by scientific study. Lots of it, too, a wide beach with space for frisbee, volleyball, etc. There weren't many shells strewn about today but as always this is a great place to walk, wade, and pick shells or build sand-castles. Early November-ish there is a spectacular International Sand Sculpting competition amid this sand. When the water's warm ti's a perfect spot for all sorts of water sports and just bobbing about in the sun and surf. Free, nicely maintained, and popular.
