“Ballydougan Pottery Cottages”
Reviewed 10 July 2013

Over the weekend I was in Northern Ireland visiting relatives. So instead of booking into a hotel miles away we rented a cottage at the pottery. It is a nice secluded place. It has its own coffee shop/ restaurant. the cottages are fully equipped and kept in a very clean condition. All bedding and towels are provided. The staff are very friendly and very helpful. If you are visiting Northern Ireland and don't like the hustle and bustle of a large town/city. Then I would recommend the
Ballydougan Pottery.

My wife and I have stayed at Ballydougan several times, previously in the Potters Cottage, but this time, it was occupied, so we stayed in The Wheat Loft above. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, having a full Irish breakfast most mornings before leaving for the day to visit family nearby in Craigavon. The owners, Sean and Marie O'Dowd, and all of the staff, are always welcoming and it is a pleasure to stay there. We will be back again before Christmas.

Room Tip: Have a look at the website and see what suits you best, we've only stayed in the Potters Cottage...

We booked the Ballydougan for our parents' Golden Wedding anniversary in June this year. I had been a number of times before for breakfast and lunch and had always been impressed with the quality of the food and service and the delightful venue. Throughout the planning process Bridget and the staff could not have been more accommodating. We had the entire venue to ourselves for the event and a number of us stayed in the self-catering cottages over the weekend so we could get together before the evening. We stayed in the Wheatloft. The cottages are a delight. They are quaint and full of character but beautifully appointed and with welcoming touches such as a very welcome tray of freshly-baked scones, biscuits and fresh milk to greet us on arrival. The kitchen area is fully equipped and the bathroom well-stocked with a hairdryer. The whole cottage was spotlessly clean and looked out over its own private deck.
On the evening of our event everything went without a hitch thanks to the thorough planning and professional approach of the staff. Guests were greeted by staff with a glass of champagne, strawberries and shortbread while they mingled in the sunny courtyard. The dining room was beautifully set out for our buffet style sit-down meal which was orchestrated perfectly by the staff. The food was excellent as were the vegetarian and vegan meals. We had ordered a cake which the venue had provided too and this was then served with tea and coffee. After the meal guests moved into the courtyard or the other area of the venue and caught up with each other or took part in the ceili. Everyone had a wonderful time and throughout the evening the staff were attentive yet unobtrusive. I cannot speak highly enough of the service they provided and the end result was the happiest and most memorable family evening we could have wished for for my parents. So, thank you Bridget and your hardworking team for making this event so special for our family. I would recommend the Ballydougan unreservedly to anyone looking for a special, intimate venue for an event or just for a high-quality breakfast, lunch or afternoon tea in a unique setting or indeed for a unique accommodation in the cottages. We will certainly be back.

We stayed here for seven nights

Very good location with nice restaurant and pottery next door
Staff of restaurant were very friendly and heipfull.

Food was excellent and service was good despite being very busy day

Cottage was well equipped and clean,
Laundry on site, Washing machine clean and modern although laundry room a bit sub standard

We had problems with vehicle access to cottages as owner and restaurant patrons parking block access to cottages. You have to walk in to cottages from restaurant
car park. Very inconvenient especially when raining.

Also had noise problems as Kiln is located immediately behind the Potters Cottage
When running made a loud low frequency noise which could be heard above the level
of the tv and was most annoying. Stopped at about 8pm at night.

When approached about vehicle access and noise from kiln owner (Sean) was quite aloof
and not helpful at all.Did not resolve either problem just advised that Kiln would switch off
at 8pm and that blocking of access could occur at any time, Don't know how we would have got our car out of the cottage car parking if we had not left early each day, As it was we were blocked on return twice.

My wife and I first visited Balldougan Pottery whilst staying at my daughters' in nearby Craigavon. As her family has increased, we decided to stay in the ground floor Potters Cottage which was about 5 minutes away. It's self-catering but has an on-site restaurant for breakfast, lunch and afternoon teas and the owners and staff are very friendly. Our cottage had a large lounge/dining kitchen and separate bedroom and bathroom and private parking. It's a peaceful area with little traffic and the Pottery Shop is well worth a visit. We are currently planning another visit to my daughter and her family before Christmas and are looking forward to staying there again.
