Functions in the evennings only in the same location as Josh's deli, which is very good but the taco experience was disappointing !

Home made everything. The chips are to die for. I'm ready to go again tonight! Don't let the name "John's Tacos" fool you. This is a gourmet food.

“Hidden gem.”
Reviewed 6 October 2013

This little restaurant is ' Josh's Deli' on Surfside during the day, and a 'pop up' taco diner in the evening. It's is an absolute hidden gem- and the more people that hear about it and spread the word the better.
Everything- and I mean everything is homemade from fresh- from the hot sauce to the chips, the salsa and the guacamole. The chips are cooked to order, and served hot with a heap of sweet, rough mashed guacamole.
The tacos are handmade, again, as you order them, with the choice of steak, homemade chorizo, fish, shrimp, and the occasional surprise filling.
They are cheap, $4 each or $11 for a trio.... And amazingly flavoured.
This is a quirky friendly, tasty little gem, and had it not have been my last night in the area, I'd have been back again.
One last note..... Try the chocolate cupcakes. Amazing, chocolately, gooey, and with a sneaky, unexpected chipotle kick!!

“Everyone who comes through Miami Beach needs to try this place”
Reviewed 18 August 2013

It is impossible to say enough good things about this place. First and foremost, the food is great. Second, everything is made here and I do mean everything. Third, the high quality ingredients are used with traditional south-of-the-border cooking techniques in a very creative way. John, the owner and chef, works behind the counter where the cooking takes place. If you sit at the counter you see all the care and attention that goes into your meal. Sitting at the counter, one of the things you notice is that there are three jars. The largest is filled with bright orange whole habaneros, the second is filled with sliced jalapenos, and the smallest with sliced onions. They are pickled and after another minute you notice the jars of hot sauce on the counter. The house-made hot sauce is orange, it is delicious and, made of the pickled habaneros (and other secret ingredients), so it has a real punch. The tortilla chips are made fresh to order. The chips get thrown into the cooker on the spot and come to you hot and perfectly crunchy and with just the right salt to put them over the top. The salsa served with the chips is made from charred tomatoes and the pico de gallo you can order with the chips is fresh and tasty.

My wife and I became instant fans of the sangria. It is not pre-made in giant drums. The small batches are made as needed during the evening and when it's time to put a batch together the fruit juices are freshly pressed on the spot.

The care and attention continues into the tacos. The corn tortillas are medium-sized and whether you order fish or shrimp, every one is handled with the same care, with the seafood dredged and cooked on the spot. Night before last they had diver scallops off the usual menu and they were terrific, too. There are not many places where, when you ask for a skirt steak taco, the chef asks if you want it medium rare. They make their own chorizo, which also produces another very nice taco. There are items on the menu other than tacos, but I have yet to get to them because the tacos are so good. The place is small, with a handful of tables and the long counter. Sean rotates behind the counter and among the tables and both he and John are friendly and helpful. Decor is pleasantly understated. The crowd seems predominantly local. Considering the quality of the food, the attention to detail and the service, prices are reasonable, with, for example, 3 tacos coming in at $11. John's is only open in the evening.

A simple menu, well-executed is a thing of beauty.

“Delicious!”

The best tacos in Miami. I can't pick a favorite...mahi, grouper, chicken, short rib, chorizo. Endless greatness! The chips, salsa and guac are good as well.
