We had lunch here based on trip advisor reviews and were not disappointed. This place has been in business since 1945 and one visit will show why. It is not fancy. The food comes in baskets and you use plastic utensils and drink out of plastic cups. But if you like a down-home kind of place, this is the real deal. The service was great, the food was great, and the waitress we had was very pleasant and really seemed to enjoy her job. They have sweet tea, not just iced tea like so many Florida restaurants. The prices are very reasonable. I only wish it was closer to where I live.
Some details: Our GPS took us the wrong way on Oakland Ave. It is located between S. Oakland and S. Adams. As others say, there is limited parking and it shares parking with a garage but that did not bother us. Be advised Cash Only. eat in or take out. Not open Sunday and they currently close at 6 PM except for Friday which is 7 PM. Also, the name of the place on the menu is "Shell Oyster Bar", not "Shell Oyster House".

We were apprehensive to go in when we pulled up. Looks like it is located in the impoundment area of an old wrecker service. Definitely go in though. It is wonderful, fresh seafood at a very reasonable price. The fried shrimp and oysters were very good. You can bring in a cooler of beer but they don't sell it. Talking about good value, how about a dozen fried shrimp or oysters, two sides, and tea for $7.95. Very basic on the inside, but clean and neat. Very convenient to FSU.

I have been in Tallahassee for 40 years and never been here. Great raw or cooked oysters. Most of the menu is fish. $7.50 for a 13 dozen is inexpensive. Service at lunch was quick and nice.

We stopped in from out of town when I was recently in Tallahassee after reading the reviews here. I was looking for a casual, inexpensive lunch. I recently tried fresh oysters and wanted to try them fried. I had fried oysters with slaw and potato salad and the others ordered chicken nuggets and fries. The oysters were great, very tender. I assume they make their own cocktail sauce (it doesnt look or taste like your every day ketchup/horsradish blend) and it was a treat. The chicken and fries were hot and tasty. We showed up around 1130 on a weekday and had our food quickly and didn't feel rushed to finish. The restaurant had a steady stream of customers that day. It is located a little NE of FAMU. The parking lot is tight and the building is almost behind a mechanic's garage. Not fancy at all, but good food for a good price. Much better to spend $7-8 on lunch here than a drive thru.

My only gripe is that they only offer bottle water. No "ice water" or "tap water"? I've only been forced to drink bottled water on foreign soil where tap water will get you sick. They only have tea or Pepsi products, not even milk. Makes it hard to choose a drink that will not get your little one all jacked up on caffeine.

Go before 5:00. Mid afternoon is best. And, for goodness sake bring a wad of greenbacks. CASH ONLY. If you enjoy beer with your deep fried dinner, bring your own. Shell Oyster house is the preferred stop for sweet salty oysters in Tallahassee. As well, all things fried feature crunchy coatings that are perfect every time!
