“More like an elegant B&B than a hotel”
Reviewed 15 February 2011

This small Tallahassee hotel should be on your list if you travel to Tallahassee for business or pleasure. The entrance way and lobby are beautifully appointed and decorated in a way that communicates charm and warmth. The lobby is nicely used for both a wonderful cocktail hour in the late afternoon, and a pleasant continental breakfast in the morning. There are always guests mingling and you can get a flavor of what's happening in town. The rooms are named after Florida's Governors [hence, the name] and are quite comfortable, if not elegant. The only drawback is the absence of a restaurant/room service, but the hotel's location in downtown, blocks from the Capital and Supreme Court and surrounded by restaurants, easily fills that void. As a B&B owner, the feel is more B&B than hotel. You'll like it.

After I read the promotional content on this hotel's Web site, I thought I'd be in for a treat during a stressful business trip to Tallahassee. Instead of a boutique hotel, however, I was dismayed to be shown a room without any real windows (there was one very small window for the entire room, placed high on one wall almost as if in a basement); an uncomfortable bed with very tall legs that made it impossible to sit easily on the bed; and furnishings and linens that looked like they belonged in a retirement home. Add to this no reliable wireless network in the outdated room and the absence of accessible power outlets and other amenities, and you've got a boutique wannabe that is failing in providing a comfortable experience -- for this traveler at least. Thank goodness that the pub across the street was open late, because at least we were able to have some good comfort food on the two nights we stayed there. The complimentary breakfast snacks and happy hour provisions were nice offerings, but not nice enough to change my rating from "poor" to "average," based on the unearned price and hype. Frankly, I would not stay at this hotel again and would not recommend it to others.

From the time you enter the lobby and see the rich wooden tones on the paneled walls matched by the soft color hues of the furnishings - you feel at home. Sitting areas are comfortable; soft music is low enough to comfortably converse; bar service is deft and offers a complete selection of premium brands. Guests come and go quietly, but are always willing to engage for a few words of conversation. Staff is helpful, but not intrusive. Rooms are tastefully appointed with all the special touches. For a business traveler or someone visiting Florida's Capital City for only a few days - this is a premier property in the best location of all - within a stone's throw of the Capital - with easy access to Museums, restaurants, and FSU/FAMU campuses. You can't beat it for the perfect stay.

My wife, teenage daughter and I stayed at Governor’s Inn for two nights on a football weekend in November of 2009. It was a wonderful stay, and I would strongly recommend the Inn to others.

The Inn is a beautifully refurbished old downtown building on pretty brick-paved Adams St. Several restaurants are within a minute’s walk from the front door. The Capitol, museums and parks are also within walking distance. There are only a few parking spaces in front of the Inn, so valets are on duty to park your car in a nearby garage. The service is fast, but go ahead and call the front desk a few minutes before you leave your room so your car is waiting.

The interior of the Inn is elegant but cozy. A big curving staircase splits the lobby into the front desk area on one side and an inviting antique furnished lounge/breakfast area on the other. Windows and skylights make the interior bright. Even the walk to our room through the oak-beamed, sky-lit halls was a treat.

Our standard (lower-priced) room was a nice size, with twin queen beds and an enormous antique armoire housing the flat screen TV, dresser drawers, and two closets. An antique desk, a comfy chair and ottoman, and a wood cabinet hiding a small fridge were in the sitting area. Ceilings were very high, and two tall windows overlooked the street. From other reviews, it sounds like not all rooms have windows to the outside, but we had one, so ask when reserving. Our antique beds were very high, which didn’t bother us, but a step is available by request. The bathroom was nicely finished, very clean and had everything we needed. Water pressure was strong, with plenty of hot water.

The continental breakfast was very good; on hand were fresh bagels, muffins, croissants, and a bowl of freshly cut fruit, as well as coffee, juice, milk, etc. A staffer kept everything filled and tidy. My wife and I enjoyed eating while sitting in front of the windows with the morning sun streaming in while we waited for our daughter to complete her primping.

The front desk service was very friendly and knowledgeable. Room service was great, and the York peppermint and the weather note on the bed at night was a nice touch. The guys doing valet service were also great. On a couple of occasions when things got busy, I noticed staff people stepping in for others who were busy. They’re a great team.

What a great weekend! We will definitely stay at the Governor’s Inn again.

My wife and I had our wedding in Tallahassee this past October, and we booked all of our out-of-town guests at the Governor's Inn. The wedding was a big success, in large part because the Governor's Inn treated our guests so well!

The staff consistently went above and beyond the call of duty. When they found out that our wedding was on the same day as FAMU's homecoming -- and therefore a section of downtown's roads would be closed in the early morning -- the hotel manager called us and helped us plan the logistics. The staff also helped us keep track of our group, placed wedding favors in each room, and passed out our info packets as guests checked in.

We couldn't have asked for a better experience -- very friendly/professional staff, perfect downtown location, and nice rooms. I highly recommend the Governor's Inn!
