It has taken a long time but downtown Tampa's Riverwalk is almost completed ... the section under the Kennedy Bridge and behind the two hotels is the major area to finish. The use of informative signs, good maps, and statues of Tampa's pioneers give the walkway more significance. Going under the Platt Street Bridge and Crosstown is an interesting experience for people who have spent decades driving over those bridges. Now we need more restaurants although there was a vendor truck waiting for walkers early in the morning.

This is well worth the drive to go over and canoe down the river and back. You can take a nice slow pace and see all kinds of wildlife. The trees give you a good amount of shade and there are plenty of picnic tables for a picnic before and after. The staff that handles the rentals and the cafe are super friendly. Try the home made chips and salsa while you are there.

Part of the charm is that it is hard to find this remote place even though it is so close to Tampa. The Hillsborough River which takes its name from the county or vice versa is a wonderful wilderness experience. You will meet the friendly staff at Canoe Escapes outpost at the John B Sargeant Park on Hwy 331 just East of Tampa. Here you will be outfitted with life jacket and paddle for a delightful adventure. You can canoe or kayak and both offer a nature experience unlike anywhere in Florida.I have canoed this several times and each time I see tons of gators big and small in their natural environment. As a birder I also enjoy the variety of long legged waders ,raptors, and woodpeckers. There are also waterfowl including coot, duck and gallinule all along the river. This is one of The last true old Florida experiences left for you to do.It I is also a family friendly excursion.

I have only visited the urban section of the Hillsborough River so cannot comment on the more rural parts. The walk is particularly recommended early or late in the day because the intense sunlight reflected off the white stone and concrete surfaces can heat up the entire experience at other times. You can choose among elevated views of the historic U. of Tampa campus with its turrets and vaguely Oriental spires, the eye-catching Tampa Art Museum's perforated stainless steel exterior, a park that makes the most of Tampa's highrise panorama as a backdrop, and - further downstream - a marina with expensive yachts named Bada Bing, At Last and Filthy Rich, among others. For the first time visitor or the returnee, definitely worth the effort.

The Hillsborough River area is a very nice park setting for family enjoyment. I was there on a photo shoot and was impressed by the cleanliness and upkeep of the entire park. This place will provide hours of family enjoyment. If your a photo junky you will enjoy the numerous photo opportunities.
