“Food was good but overall experience was bad”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 January 2013

We dined here this past Sunday for lunch, I'd been looking forward to going since they just opened recently. It didn't start well when it took the hostess 10 minutes to acknowledge our presence and seat us, despite being the only people standing at the counter. She seemed far more concerned about the telephone and her cellphone instead of us. Our server was very nice though and asked if this was our first time there. When we said yes she said 'boy you sure picked a bad time, we're swamped!' Wow, didn't know lunch time was a 'bad time' to come?

She recommended an appetizer as it would be a while before we got our lunch, and then took us over to the line to get our food. We stood in that line for almost 15 minutes holding little bowls of uncooked food before we ever got close enough to hand it off to the cooks. We could see our appetizer sitting back at the table getting cold, but there was not much we could do about that. After we dropped off our food to be cooked, it was about another 20 minutes before we finally got our lunch.

I understand it was busy at the time we arrived and it's probably quicker in off hours, but there shouldn't be a 'bad time' for someone to come to your business. The concept seems like an interesting idea, but it seems to fall apart completely if there's a rush of diners. While the food itself was good, I don't think I would return after this experience.

“Genghis 'Con'”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 January 2013

A lot of people were showing up at the latest culinary incarnation at the old Sonny's
BBQ location at the Sweetbay plaza on Northdale, so we decided to try it out.

Mongolian is the theme, a vision of the mighty Khan's warriors cooking meat on their
shields is presented.
Actually it's a self serve hibachi grill, like Japanese Steakhouse but without the funny cook.

After they offer you to purchase appetizers and beverages, you are presented with a
stainless steel bowl, maybe 6" in diameter, and a small cup for the sauce.
It's $10 for one pass, $5 extra if you want 'all you can eat'.
You then proceed down a cattle shoot to the raw food selection area.
Chicken, Marinated Beef, and Shrimp are the main proteins to put in your bowl.
The Fresh vegetable choices are limited mainly to onion and green pepper.
Drained canned vegetable choices were bamboo shoot, baby corn, water
chestnut, pineapple chunk, even the green bean and bean sprouts tasted canned.
The Celantro was less than fresh.

Your bowl is handed off to the cooks who toss it onto a round flat top.
Orders are separated by wooden sticks, which are also used to cook your meal.

You are offered to watch your meal cook, as they 'put on quite a show'.
Not so much.

The result was poor, the shrimp got very small and the beef was tough.

The staff was friendly and the restaurant was clean and freshly remodeled with quality
new fixtures, but because of the price and poor quality, we won't be back.
