“Good golf course and hotel”

Eight friends from Houston stayed 3 days at Tampa Palms G&CC for a guys' days-away golf outing. We played TPC&CC our final day.

Golfing was 4-5 star. Very pretty course winding through picturesque setting. Beautiful homes along the course. Lots of varied wildlife -- including hawks and alligators. Course has interesting, well thought out holes. Our crew played it forward from the tees that gave us about a 6000' track. The only down-side was that the greens had been heavily sanded the day before we played. Putting on those greens was a crapshoot, especially later in the day when the greens had been walked on a lot. We were there only for fun and no one seemed particularly bothered. Some of us actually ended up playing 36 holes on the course that day.

The hotel was quite acceptable. The rooms were immense -- some suites, some simply very large rooms. My second floor room over looked the 18th hole and it was a beautiful view. The only downside was that it also overlooked the bar's patio which could be a bit noisy at times.

Our main complaint about the hotel itself was that its bar and restaurant were closed just when we wanted to use them. For example, the bar closed at 3pm on Saturday and 5pm or so on Sunday. Kind of crazy, we thought, for a hotel. The upside was that the bartender was quite happy to serve us beers while he was cleaning up, so we didn't have to go thirsty. The restaurant was open for our final night in town. The food was quite good, service was friendly and attentive.

I'd recommend Tampa Palms for golfing. For accommodation, it was a good value (with our ClubCorp memberships). Just be cognizant of the bar/restaurant hours before making dinner plans.

Played it on a golf trip. Greens are fast and there is a lot of wildlife/alligators. It is somewhat tight and requires accuracy but not too overly challenging. It's a very good private course, not great. It would be in the excellent category if it were a public course. The locker room is incredible with a Jacuzzi, sauna, etc. Played with a member and was surprised to learn how reasonably priced membership is. Much better value than my club at home in Pa.

Very fun course that is very tight. You will see alligators. We saw 6 on one hole. Enjoy it! Food was as good as any I found at a golf course. Room? a little dated, but comfortable.

I use a different standard for rating private golf courses than I do for public golf courses. A private course should be superior to public courses. This course, were it a public course, would get a 4.5 rating from me.
The layout of the front 9 holes is ho-hum. straight out fairways from tee to green with only a few hazards. One caveat, you must stay in the fairways. The tree lines on both sides of the fairways are not very forgiving. The fairways are reasonably wide. The back nine gets a lot more interesting with many dog legs and lots of water and bunkers.
The fairways were well covered with grass but many parts of the grass were browned out. Not bare, just brown. The greens were mowed very short and spray painted green. This helped to cover bare spots. The paint (or whatever the material is) tended to stick the grass blades together giving the green a smooth surface that rolled true but not as fast as they looked. I'd rate the stimp at 10.
The course is very well marked and meanders thru beautiful nature areas. Although I saw one walker I would not consider this a very walkable course. There are long scenic trails between holes. The houses that are visible from the fairways are huge and appear to be all custom designed and built.
The club house is what you would expect at a private club. Very large and well appointed. We showered and dressed after the round so we could meet our wives for dinner. The showers were clean and body wash and towels were provided. They even have a hot tub in the shower room. '
Everyone on the staff was extremely helpful and happy to see us.
Overall, it is not a very memorable course.

Great course, well maintained. Greens very fast when I played. It's a tough layout, narrow, precise shots required. Bring lots of balls. Lots of wildlife to view while playing. Club house is excellent with friendly staff. One of, if not the best, golf deal in the Tampa Bay area.
