“Call the exterminator”

In all my years of traveling for business and pleasure, don't think I've ever written a review that is going to be as bad as this one. A group of associates and I stayed at the Westin Tampa Harbour Island for 2 nights. The first room we were given had some kind of bugs in it, we thought it might have been fleas, so we called down to the front desk and the clerk was most apologetic and moved us to another room. He even offered to comp our breakfast the next morning, which we thanked him for, but declined. The next room looked good and we got settled and left for our meeting. The next morning, as we were getting ready to leave for our meeting, we found a roach crawling on the wall and killed it. We called down to the front desk and they said that they would send a maintenance man up to investigate. (They actually referred to him as some sort of engineer). We left for our day of meetings and assumed they had sprayed while we were gone. When we returned, we began to get ready to go out for the evening and just as we were ready to leave, we found another roach crawling on the chair right next to my suitcase! We called the front desk again and again they sent their engineer person up to our room. I handed him the dead roach and he again sprayed. They did ask if we wanted to move to another room, but really??? Everyone knows that if you see one roach, there are many more that you don't see, so what is the point of moving to a different room? How do you explain the bug bites all over my feet and ankles. We think that's from the fleas in the first room and elevator.

A couple of other things were disturbing too. As you exit the elevators, there is a sign asking you to keep the noise down as a courtesy to the other guests and giving the impression that partying in rooms is frowned upon. I didn't find the hotel to be loud, or guests to be discourteous, but the hotel is right next door to the convention center, so who knows what might happen when the hotel is full with vendors and participants. They claim it is newly renovated, yet the rugs in the lobby and hallways look old and dirty. They charge a ridiculous amount for WIFI, seriously crazy for what is supposed to be a "luxury" hotel. The shuttle service took us all to dinner and told us to call when we were ready to be picked up. We were less than a 10 minute drive and we called when we were being served dessert and they took an hour to come pick us up. By the time we were picked up, the restaurant was closing and we were on the verge of calling for a taxi, instead of being left standing in a dark parking lot.

When we checked out, we saw that they had credited us for one night at the hotel in return for our inconvenience. That was nice of them, but all they really needed to do was say they were sorry and a promise that they would take care of their infestation problem. However it didn't stop there. The manager contacted me after I posted on Starwood's Facebook page, expressing my shock that the hotel was in such disrepair and he came just a few words short of calling us liars. He called me and left me a voicemail saying they had investigated our "allegations" and found them to be false. Allegations? Really? I handed your maintenance man the dead roach.

I called him back and left a voicemail for him asking for a return call and never heard from him again. I'm shocked and appalled that a manager would behave in such a manner. I've struggled with writing this, because as a whole, I enjoy staying at all hotels that are associated with Starwood. I've never had a problem at any of their hotels, from the smallest, to the biggest, St. Regis in NYC. I've thought long and hard about it and have told others of our experience and they all agreed that if I could save one person from having the same experience then I needed to write this review. So, here it is, better late than never. Perhaps by the time this is written, they will have solved their infestation problem and perhaps the manager, who if I recall, his name was Rafael, is no longer there.

First, the location of this hotel is astounding. Perfectly located for the Tampa Convention Center, the Forum, and downtown more generally, the spot is excellent.

The hotel is nice. It is not as nice as the Embassy Suites or Marriott across the bridge, though. They severely outclass the Westin in every way (in terms of looks).

The staff at Westin is nice and helpful. Very courteous.

Big issues: The shuttle service the Westin contracts with is terrible. Incredibly poor communication, (I'm still getting calls asking if I'm at the airport), awful service. They need to change quickly.

No free wifi. Seriously. 21st century, 'luxury' hotel? Free wifi.

This is probably a 3.5...but we'll round up for the view.

Room Tip: Don't use the shuttle service they recommend.

This harbourfront hotel has a nice lobby but the rooms are very plain, not what you'd expect from a Westin. Décor is minimalist, not trendy in any way. Pool is nice for a swim but you have to take a special elevator, that must be from the early days of the hotel as it is excruciatingly slow. The exercise room is the best amenity in this hotel and it is open 24 hrs. a day for hotel guests with new, state of the art equipment.

I highly recommend the Westin at Harbour Island in Tampa. The staff was amazing and helpful for so many things. We were there to see the Bolts play and we were within easy walking distance to the rink. Jewell impressed us so much with her help and kindness that it compelled me to write this review. She, along with Jackie and Angela at the desk were super helpful and very nice. Loved the room, the view and the smell of this hotel. Great experience!

Room Tip: A room with a view of the harbor is nice!

Settled on this property when deciding to do a quick weekend getaway. We had tickets to attend the Tampa Bay Lightning game and wanted a hotel with close proximity to the Tampa Bay Times Forum.

Check-In:
We arrived at the hotel around 530PM and found the Reception desk awkwardly tucked into the 2nd story of the building. While checking in, the frond desk representative asked if we had already checked in, when we answered "no" he seemed puzzled and proceeded to disappear to the back room. This left us very confused and a bit of an awkward first impression on the property. The rep came back and apologized for taking so long, he asked us for any special requests and what type of bedding we wanted. He was able to give us a room on a high floor with a king bed (we appreciated his efforts). The check-in process took much longer than expected (close to 20 minutes), especially since we were the only ones checking in at the time.

The Room:
Our room was located on the 9th floor. There was a note at the front desk explaining the numerous renovations that have taken place at the hotel over the past few years. I don't think these renovations have made their way into the rooms. While the bed was comfortable, the room definitely needed some TLC. Paint was peeling behind the bathroom door, the room entry door was sticking. Overall, for a hotel that was classified as a "4-Star", the room didn't live up to what we expected for that rating. One item that took me by surprise was the lack of free-wifi in the room. It just seems that free wifi is everywhere now and charging close to $15 for 24hr access seems a bit ridiculous. It's sad that free-wifi is offered at much lower end properties, yet the Westin decides it likes to squeeze more money out of its Guests.

Also, parking was $17/night and when we returned from a late night somewhere else in the city, we found it difficult to find a parking space. There were lots of cars double parked on the garage's roads making it difficult to navigate. We eventually found a space that looked like a parking spot after driving around for a while.

Overall our stay was pleasant and it was nice to be able to walk to the arena for the hockey game. While I'd recommend this hotel to others heading to the area, I'd advise them to look for other properties first before deciding on this one. It wasn't a bad experience - but it didn't leave me with the desire to come back immediately.

Locaton, Location, Location is what they say makes a property valuable, today we learned that the Staff is what will keep us coming back! From the moment we handed the keys of our vehicle to the Valet attendant to check out this afternoon the experience was perfect. Mike Napoli, at the Front Desk was prompt, helpful and amazingly helpful getting us a beautiful view and a great room at an affordable price. Breakfast was great. The bartender, Gino was friendly and engaging. We have stayed here many times and we will be back again!

We stayed at the Westin Tampa Harbour Island Hotel last Tuesday. We were going to the Tampa Bay Rays baseball game that night and choose this hotel because it was a Westin. Believe me, we were not disappointed. Our hotel room was beyond our expectations. The room was spacious and our view was spectacular. The staff went out of their way to meet our every need.
We were new to the area and the staff at the front desk went out of their way to answer our questions. They told us about the river walk area and a great spot for lunch. We did both and the walk and the restaurant and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. If you are looking for a great place to stay, we highly recommend this hotel. We plan to return again next year.

Room Tip: If you are an SPG member, you are guaranteed a great room
