“ok hotel, not up to intercontinental standards”
Reviewed 12 June 2011

The hotel was not like any other intercontinental that I have stayed at before. The sheets had holes in them, a piece of the chair was broken off, and it smelt like cigarette smoke. It is in an office building in an area with nothing really to do.

InterContinental Tampa was a surprisingly good value, and nice place to stay. In a portfolio of inclusions that should be a part of most urban luxury hotel experiences, at the InterContinental Tampa, parking is free and in room internet is free. The recent renovation of this hotel was nicely done, with a vaguely nautical, island/Balinese theme, rich in blues and neutral, natural materials.

The hotel has a unique position as the middle tower in a three tower complex connected by twin atriums--most guest rooms have interior views then, and can be a bit dark. Rooms are standard size and freshly renovated--with high beds, dark blue accent walls, and new furniture, down to flat screen TVs. Bathrooms have been renovated as well, though the features are standard combined tubs/showers--with anemic water pressure.

The fitness center is small, lots of cardio but few weight machines. The pool on the 9th floor features rooftop views of Tampa Bay and the surrounding Westshore neighborhood.

Two substantial shopping malls and the TPA airport are close at hand, and the downtown and Ybor City neighborhoods are about 10 minutes away by car. Tampa is spread out, and most travelers would want to use a car if they stay at the InterContinental.

For a hotel of this stature, the rates are surprisingly low. Standard rates for the night I stayed were $99; an online promotion got me this room for $50. In either instance, the public areas and guest rooms feel like a hotel much more expensive--particularly when the free parking and internet are figured in.

Highly recommend this hotel, and would choose to stay here on a future trip, again.

PS--while identified as an InterContinental hotel, this hotel is owned and operated by Destination Hotels & Resorts.

Room Tip: If natural light is important, req. exterior rm.

I stayed at this hotel w/ my husband while he was at a work conference. The hotel itself is fine, except for when the toilet wasn't flushing very well and when I opened the one and only (large) window to basically flash a bunch of office people...(the rooms open to a atrium!)
Fine for business meetings, but if you live out of town, stay at Renaissance Hotel at International Mall..much more to do there w/ Bay Street and the mall.

I arrived at the hotel for 1 night 9th May when we pulled up we decided to do vallet parking which was 18$ which was to be expected .Smooth checkin asked if 5th floor was ok went to room which was spotless and looked onto front of hotel staff were polite the food in hotel was excellent but pricey but outside hotel is mall with all the food chains in usa we know and like and seasons 52 eatery right next to hotel. Drinks in hotel will set you back 11$ for cheapest wine! breakfast buffet 18$ each the pool is agreeably small but well set up with good quality towels water machine shower ect ok not designed for kids but to be fair think the hotel is business based and maybe that is why airport easy 10 minute drive away I like good hotels and cannot find anything to complain about apart for beverage and food prices which where high I cannot understand someones posting about bed bugs find it hard to believe that a hotel of this standard would overlook that! as for the toothpaste would like to say I was in deluxe room and there was no toothpaste but wouldnt travel without my own any way! thankyou for a memorable stay and will be back

Room Tip: ask for low floor

This hotel exceeded my every expection from the accommodating staff to the beds that I never wanted to get out of.

Location is perfect...depending on what you consider perfect. You are at the entrance to the highway that takes you to both St. Pete's or Clearwater. Directly across the street is a huge mall with Macy's, Saks, Penny's, PF Chang's, AMC theatres and about 150 stores and restaurants. Also across the street is a 24hr Walgreens and a Starbucks. It's about a 10 min drive to Howard Street where there are great boutiques and restaurants and less than 5 minutes from the airport. To me, that's perfect.

Hotel ammenities - first, let me say the staff can not do enough for their guests. A special thank you to Brian the Conceirge. He gave us great restaurant recos and followed up the next day to see how we liked it. Whatever we asked for was "no problem". The lobby is beautiful with a lot of seating, a nice bar, coffee shop and steak house plus a business centre with 4 computers...no waiting. The pool is on the 9th floor and is small but very nicely appointed. And parking for hotel guest is FREE. Yes...FREE. Even with a wedding going on in the hotel while we were there, we never had a problem finding a spot.

Rooms - pure luxury. The bed was so high off the ground my feet dangled! That was due to the impossibly thick and cushy mattress. The linens were soft and luxurious. Bathroom is beautiful and even the toiletries (from Aroma) are fantastic. The only problem was the blackout drapery made us feel like we never wanted to get out of that amazing bed!!!

Overall...this is where I would stay on my next trip to Tampa.

I stayed here on a Friday night and got an exceptionally low rate through priceline the day before. Knowing this, I was aware that I would not get the best room in the house, but I'm pleased to report that the negatives were not nearly as bad as I've encountered at other hotels.

Very nice TV setup and device to input your ipod or computer input, if it would have worked. The TV in my room was not operative. It would not power on. Fortunately, I don't watch TV, but did want some music (which also did not work). I did not bother to complain.

Beware the mini-bar. There are sensors under every can or bottle. If you so much as remove a can to look at it, or in my case to take it out to make room for my own beverage, it instantly charges to your room. I had to call to have the charges removed, which they did without an issue.

Wi-fi is free, though it was slow and at times seemed to have no connection for a minute or two. Most business hotels do not offer free wi-fi, so even in this state, I was grateful for it.

Self parking is free in the indoor garage next to the building. Another unusually good deal for a business hotel.

Overall, a terrific value for the $55 I paid.

Room Tip: Ask for a mid-level floor, street view.
