“Highly Recommend!”
Reviewed 11 March 2009

We stayed at the InterContinental in March 2009.

Rooms: The rooms were nicely appointed and very contemporary. The bed was very comfy and there were lots of pillows. They have some neat amenities, There is an iPod docking station/alarm clock, nice flat screen television, a small safe and FREE INTERNET!!! among many other things. They don't have any vending machines in the hotel because they have mini-bars in the room. I am apparently a novice at the mini-bar thing. As I was snooping around in the fridge, I took a bottle of cashews out and put it back right where I found it, only to be charged for it at check-out. Apparently it is an automated system. The guest clerk took care of it no questions asked. The bathrooms are very contemporary as well and large enough for 2 people to move around.

Exercise Room: Is located on the 11th (top) floor. It had several treadmills overlooking the office building that is adjoined to the hotel. There were several bikes and elliptical machines and a small area for weight lifting. The cardio equipment had "CardioVision" televisions attached. The hotel even supplied earphones (located right in the exercise room) in case you forget yours.

Pool: The pool is located on the 9th floor and has a nice view of the bay. We would have loved to use it, but when we were there all the chairs were taken by early afternoon.

Coffee Kiosk: There is a kiosk in-between the hotel and one of the adjoining office buildings. They serve bagels and muffins in the morning in addition to coffee, soft drinks, tea and juice at reasonable prices.

Location: The hotel is about 2 miles from the airport and about 20 minutes from downtown Tampa and it is nearly a straight shot there. We liked that it was located across the street from a mall. There were lots of great places to eat there. They had a Mitchell's Fish Market (highly recommend!) and PF Changs as well as a couple of other nice restaurants.

Our visit to the Intercontinental in Tampa was an overall good, although certainly not exceptional, experience. The hotel is located just a little south of the airport and close to I-275 which allows easy access to virtually anywhere in the Tampa/St. Petersburg area. As mentioned in other Trip Advisor reviews, the hotel is built into a fairly large office building complex.

Arrival at the Intercontinental was fairly efficient. We followed the signs and parked in the garage attached to the building. Since we arrived in the evening, there was not a premium on finding a good parking space. I did notice, however, that upon departing for the day, there were oftentimes a huge influx of cars into the garage. On several occasions as we were leaving, I could not find an obvious spot in the “hotel parking” zone of the garage. Again, we never had a problem as we typically did not return to the hotel until after dinner each evening. The check-in process was a little odd as there was not an obvious reception area. With that being said, you do check-in opposite a set of elevators at a small area where typically one person is standing. Check-in was quick and efficient. We requested a high floor and were placed on the 10th of 11 floors.

The room we received was fairly well appointed. The overall dimensions are a bit on the small size, however, the space itself is well designed. The bathroom was immediately to the right of the door and included a high sink and a shower/tub. The toiletries were nice and an elaborate sewing kit was also provided. Again, the bathroom including the tub was a bit on the small size. There was not much space to stretch out, and certainly the space could only be used effectively by one person at a time. The room included a king size bed which was quite firm and comfortable. An LCD television was on the opposite cabinet which also included a minibar and safe. Of note, our safe would not function correctly. Despite informing the front desk, the safe was never made operational during our stay. The desk is quite useful and includes a pull-out writing board. The view from the room was of the atrium of the office building. Although I doubt any alternative angles of the roads below would be more interesting.

We did use the exercise room a couple times during our stay. There were approximately eight elliptical/treadmill/bicycle machines as well as nautilus equipment and free weights. It was not a huge room, but entirely adequate. Virtually every machine has an attached television with individual controls. They even have a basket of prepackaged headphones to use for your workout if you forgot yours. The pool is located on the 9th floor and is not particularly large either. There is space for approximately 15-20 people. We did not have a problem claiming chairs in the morning, although the situation might be more difficult if the hotel was crowded.

We did not try Shula’s restaurant while we were there. Directly across the street are a Starbucks and Panera Bread which we used at breakfast. Nearby, the International Plaza shopping complex includes a Cheesecake Factory as well as more trendy dining options.

Overall, our visit to the Intercontinental was good. There was nothing particularly memorable about the property or location, however, it does allow for a good base to explore the surrounding areas.

Bought at a greatly reduced price on priceline - checked in late at night after a free shuttle ride from airport - rooms are very small but nicely furnished and decorated - beds were absolutely wonderful & lots of pillows were provided - quiet -no noise from other rooms - coffee maker and fridge - lobby & rooftop pool lovely - great service - within walking distance to some restaurants and right next to a large mall - we will definitely stay here again if we can get it at a reduced price - regular rate is more than $300 a night!!
