St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral
Certificate of Excellence
More attraction details
Attraction details
Owner description: St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral was founded in 1905 and is the first and original Greek Orthodox Christian parish of the Tampa-St. Petersburg area. The present Cathedral was completed during WWII, in 1943. Much of the interior marble, including the iconostasis (icon screen), is from the Greek pavilion of the 1939 World's Fair in New York City. The Cathedral contains actual relics of St. Nicholas of Myra and is a point of pilgrimage for those who seek the intercessions of this most beloved of Christian saints. The Cathedral tower is the tallest architectural structure in Tarpon Springs and serves as the heart of the downtown and city. In the plaza to the north of the Cathedral is the famous "Cross Diver" statue which captures the pinnacle of the annual Epiphany Day (January 6) celebration for which the St. Nicholas Cathedral parish is known the world over. At the base of the statue are the names of young men - Orthodox Christian and non-Orthodox Christian - who made the supreme sacrifice during World War II.

“Some Kind Of Wonderful”
Reviewed 18 April 2014

This Church is amazing. The icons, the murals and the glass windows. It is a spiritual place. You can find peace here among the chaotic thrall of the nearby Sponge Docks. It is a national treasure. It has to be seen to know it's true beauty.

“Beautiful Stained Glass Windows”
Reviewed 2 April 2014

We visited Tarpon Springs Florida the other day with the intention of eating an Authentic Greek Meal. Friends had recommended the restaurant "Mykonos" and the sponge docks too. I always check out an area I'm going to visit for any "not to miss" interesting things. St Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church caught my attention. From the outside you can see the unmistakable shape of the traditional dome. It was raining so we scurried inside. We lit candles, said prayers for our families, and then had the sanctuary to ourselves to enjoy. We wandered around with our necks craned, looking upwards in awe. The stained glass windows are really beautiful, and there are many, especially the ones way up in the dome. However, what makes this church special are the beautifully painted murals with the vivid colors. I imagine worshiping here would be very special.

“Marvellous murals and stained glass”
Reviewed 28 March 2014

I loved this unusual Greek Orthodox Church which you will see as you drive towards the Sponge Docks in Tarpon Springs. The brick-built exterior has a traditional dome and a tall tower. In the forecourt there is a statue of a boy diving for the cross (a local tradition held in Tarpon Springs each Epiphany).

The church is said to be modelled on that of St Sophia of Istanbul, one of the most beautiful churches in the world. Inside St Nicholas Church at Tarpon Springs the stained glass, gold-topped columns and painted murals were just jaw-dropping. The beautiful colors and fantastically high standard of workmanship were wonderful to admire.

I wish there had been a leaflet or self-guided tour to enhance the visit, but all-in-all it is a great place to visit and admire.
