we just happened to be in town Saturday, when the train made it's first run in maybe 6 years? Plenty of seats, plenty of history in the engine and some of the cars. We sat in the padded seats with the propped open window car for our first leg of the journey from Mt. Dora to Tavares. We made the return trip in the open car ( I called it a cattle car), all open air, and bare bench seats.More a non restricted view from this car. It was fun to hear the chug-chug and people lined up here and there on the street and in their yards, waving at the train. Lots of smiles all around. From the little kids to the big adult kids, everyone seemed to enjoy a good time. I'd recommend it to anyone traveling there on the weekend, especially if you have children. They seemed to get a kick out of it. In Tavares, there's a giant play park right at the train station, which has a water splash park that was crawling with kids and parents on the day we stopped over. Looked like fun. You could take the kids there early, and make a return trip, which comes back to Mt Dora at 4:00.

The Steam train and carriages are amazing, but that's it. It's expensive and when you ride the train, there is nothing to look at. We were taken for a ride that went behind run down ghetto shacks, overgrown backyards, dumped automobiles and industrial yards. The ride was advertised on the website and on the tickets as a scenic journey to Mount Dora and return. However, we were only taken to Ellsworth junction and then reversed back to Tavares. Rubbish, false advertising, don't bother.

I think the train by itself is amazing, The history and the beauty of the train is great. BUT the view when you ride the train is nothing to look at. We did a ride that took us to an empty field and then we had to wait 15 mins OFF the train while the unhooked the train. I think that the themed rides are great, like Santa and Easter bunny but the other ride I went on were not worth the price. the staff is amazing.

While a little pricey for ride (apprx. $25) , the steam engine train provides a glimpse back to days past in Florida.

Definitely worth including on your weekend plans! They run their trains usually during the weekend with steam locos, whilst during the week diesel engine will take you. New schedule added which allows you to get from Tavares to Mount Dora and back.

Particular to recommend are their special services, such as the Christmas train. We have been joining "Santas train" now every year since our daughter was born. And still, as sure as the sun rises, she will continue to ask when we finally meet Santa again.
Great show by the team, fantastic entertainment.
