“Lovely quiet Bistro with great wine & delicious food”
Reviewed 17 July 2013

Had another amazing dinner tonight at this quiet little Bistro on downtown Venice. Wonderful wine, attentive service and good value. Tonight's meal was the monthly Czech dinner which was delicious as usual. It's quiet here and you can easily talk to you table partners and enjoy a leisurely meal.

“Nice to see they are still using old chef Lisa's photos of the food.”
Reviewed 6 July 2013

Since the old chef left the food and servings went down hill. I wouldn't recommend the restaurant to anybody. Chef Lisa cooked consistent. The food isn't fresh.

“Simple but friendly”
Reviewed 23 June 2013

Stopped in for a quick lunch while strolling Venice Avenue. They had a surprising selection of Czech beers and Greek food. I had the Greek flatbread and he had a pesto chicken sandwich. Both were outstanding. Friendly staff and a fantastic location on the Avenue. Will definitely return.

“Have an open mind, go with an authentic alternative”
Reviewed 21 June 2013

We chose to eat on Czech Night, which is every 3rd Wednesday. The regular menu is suspended and an authentic, fresh cooked Czech menu is available instead. It is very fairly planned, offering a la carte options for each course plus 2 different entrees within a set 3 course menu at around $25pp. This gives options to each diner within a limited, but freshly cooked menu using good quality, unprocessed ingredients.
This is the star attraction, since owners Eliska and Thomas are Czech and enthusiastic, if, at first, a little shy about offering you a genuine taste of their cuisine. They cook food, from scratch, starting with basic ingredients and offering an unusual, authentic outcome.
Within the menu, they also offer a reduction on two of their bottled Czech beers. Czech brands are world class and worth tasting in their own right. Within the format of the menu on Czech Night, these beers are an essential part of enjoying the experience.
Clients will need to be willing to try something they, probably, haven't tasted before and will not be given a replica of what we each order every time at other restaurants in the area. If you are prepared to enjoy this experience then go and try it.

We both ate Stuffed Dumplings with Sweet and Sour Cabbage. The two cabbage tastes were a revelation, we have visited Prague on several trips, including a home stay out there, nevertheless, the cabbage in particular was stunningly and unexpectedly good. A combination of sour white cabbage flavoured with caraway seed and a hint of vinegar (we couldn't decide whether the cabbage was pickled or fresh (we should have asked), and, alongside, a wonderfully sweet red cabbage with (we thought) brown sugars. These tastes alone were worth trying. Coupled with caramelised brown onions and the Ham Stuffed Dumplings... Wow!
The serving was quite heavy, even for the US. We were given 5 half-dumplings each, nicely arranged on the plate. I ate 3 and Karen ate 2, leaving us with a whole entree to box up, share and enjoy all over again, at home.
Thomas came over several times to talk with us, in addition to the careful attention of our waiter. I guess Elisha was cooking. It is certainly worth taking his approach as more that a routine check of "How is the food", "Is everything OK". Make an effort to engage Thomas in conversation, ask about The Czech Republic, the food etc... This is a bonus opportunity to add to your experience of uncommon and distinctive cultures.
Go try. Hope it works for you too.

“Great Authentic Czech Food”
Reviewed 20 June 2013

Isn't it amazing how one person hates something and the next person thinks its the greatest thing? This is a mom and pop deal. Went to the Czech republic recently and the decor is similar to what you would find there - and sit back in your seat and look towards the bar area and this is a cool little spot. I like not being in someone's lap during dinner and having things spread out is a nice departure. Could use a few different touches but as a start up you often need some extra cash and perhaps they are not there yet. Lets talk about food. Reserved last night for their monthly Czech night. The place was sold out. Goulash with layers of spicing and flavors you could never duplicate at home. Beer baked chicken legs over decadent real mashed potatoes. Dumplings that had simmered for 6 hours we were told, filled with ham and vegetables. Fresh sauerkraut and sweet and sour red cabbage as the side. Fresh baked peach tarts. Ice cold Czech beer for $3 a bottle. This was a true authentic homemade dinner. The care and love of food was obvious and the ingredients fresh and complex. The owners don't appear 100% comfortable with English but were gracious and always checking to make sure we were enjoying ourselves. If you are at a level that you think eating at Chilis is a great dining experience you won't do well here. If you have travelled or know anything about traditional European cooking you have come to the right place. As with any restaurant there will be missteps but I have learned it takes 2 visits and trying different things to get an accurate picture of a place. I'll be back July for Czech night if I can get reservations and I know it will be worth the wait.
