What can I say that hasn't already been said. Blue Moon villas are wonderful! The first thing you will notice are the incredible views from your verandah. Most husband and I are go, go, go types of people and we can honestly say that we would have been happy if we had never been allowed to leave the verandah. We made a sugar water concoction and the little birds happily cover over to our table and had breakfast with us each morning. The outdoor shower is spectacular...showering oustide under the stars is magical! An image we won't soon forget.
The unit has everything you could want...2 coolers, blender, coffee pot, toaster, microwave, small refrigerator, etc. We stopped off at Gourmet Basket which is located right outside the airport and stocked up on cereal, milk, juice, lunchmeat, cheese and then supplemented with yogurt (Yao is made on the island and is delish!!) and fruit from Bailey's. We made our breakfast each morning and then packed lunches and brought it in the cooler to the various beaches around the island.
Dinners out were wonderful. I highly recommend Abracadabra for authentic Italian, OJs for the whole red snapper and sunset (saw a green flash!), and Trappa's (MAKE A RESERVATION). Very reasonably priced and delicious.
Mershon is incredibly helpful and was able to book us on the EcoTour through Antigua Adventures that takes you on a boat tour around the island and allows you to climb Hell's Gate (thrill seekers only!), snorkeling, a little hiking, etc. It was a wonderful day. Mershon is always available (their house is located right below the villas) to answer questions, provide beach and/or restaurant suggestions and help with any other detail.
Don't look any further. There is no way you would be disappointed at Blue Moon. If it's available, book it now!!
Blue Moon Villas, at Galleon Beach, sets the bar very high for any visit to Antigua or other islands in the Caribbean!
If you are a "tourist" looking for that all inclusive resort, where you never leave the property, need a swim up bar, or have liquor taps in your room, then this is not the place for you. No Carnival Cruise crowd here, but you'll be amongst the international yacht-set where you'll be hearing accents from the U.K., Australia, France, Italy, and some German and Canadian...Americans are not as prevalent. If you are a "true traveler", that wants to feel the real pace of Antigua, then make Blue Moon Villas your home base! This is an ideal location for couples looking for peace, quiet and romance.
There are only two villas on the property, so we never felt crowded. Each villa is identical and is perfectly equipped with a full kitchen, living area, king-sized bed, and private veranda with a view that you'll NEVER get tired of. The outdoor shower is divine! Galleon Beach feels like an exclusive, tucked away, sleepy community. There is a gate that is manned after 6pm and all night, which gives an extra sense of exclusiveness without any pretentiousness. Galleon Beach is conveniently located within a five minute drive to several key locations including Falmouth Harbor (restaurants, nightlife, shopping) and Shirley's Heights (best view on the island). Shonnie and Michael, were the the most wonderful hosts and recommended restaurants and activities, that hit it out of the park every single time.
We stayed a week and rented a 4x4 ($55 a day from Lion's Car Rental). As Americans, driving on the left is not the tough part, but the roads can be. So be alert, since secondary roads can be very gravely - get a 4x4. However, the Antiguans, are the nicest people, even as drivers!
Tips: Go to the local market (Bailey's), prepare breakfasts (local in season fruit is the best). Hit up Carib Roasters for coffee (make your own as a cup of coffee/iced coffee is pretty pricey, no Starbucks here!). The kitchen has a blender, so pick up a bottle of English Harbour aged rum ($8 USD), fruit juices/ coconut water, and make your own rummy concoction, while watching the sunset from your veranda. Have a marina or beach-side lunch, but definitely hit Falmouth Harbor for great dinners. Restaurants are usually run by ex-pat Italians, French or Germans and serve a high quality meal that is reasonable and not overpriced. Finding local Antiguan food is harder to find, but definitely pick up local favorite -Susie's Hot Sauce. Hob knob with the yacht set at Cloggy's for a night cap! Most establishments take USD and the East Caribbean currency is fixed to the USD rate.
So go off and have your own Antiguan adventure! Find those secret beaches where you will be the only ones there, or stop and have a Carib beer at a local beach-side establishment. Remember to smile and wave to everyone, there's no reason not to.
We just returned from an amazing stay at Blue Moon and would highly recommend both the property and the hosts! The villas are beautiful and contain everything you could want for a relaxing stay. The reviews we read were right on point and I could repeat them all--gorgeous location, beautifully maintained villa, and stunning location!
Shonnie and Michael, the hosts of the villas, were so kind and not in the slightest intrusive. They were eager to make sure we understood and enjoyed Antigua and Blue Moon. Gracious and kind, they met our every need and clearly work so hard to make sure the property meets your expectations.
Back at work now for several days, and both my husband and I are keeping a picture of the calmness and beauty of Blue Moon with us!
We stayed at Blue Moon from April 9-16 2011. This is an absolutely amazing spot with the most incredible views. We were looking for a relaxing escape and we found it at Blue Moon, hidden in paradise. The villa is very spacious, clean and comfortable - we loved the shower!! Easy walk to the beach. We happened to get an extremely unusual week with some cloudy days that somehow didn't matter as much with the ability to relax on the porch, enjoy the views, watch the comings and goings of the sailboats and the peacefulness and quiet. We were entertained by lots of hummingbirds and local birds. It was classic yacht race week and we had prime viewing of several of the races. Shonnie and Michael are wonderful and extremely helpful/knowledgeable hosts providing suggestions on all things local. We would definitely stay here again for any future trips to Antigua! We highly recommend Blue Moon Villa!
This was our first visit to Antigua and we were extremely fortunate to find Blue Moon. We drove around much of the island during our stay and found nowhere we would rather be. The villa is situated in the best postion on the bay, slighty higher than other villas which provides both privacy and quiet. The view from the verandah is genuinely awesome. Enjoy a glass of wine while watching the wonderful sunsets over Monserrat or have a leisurely breakfast as the bay begins to wake and yachts make their way out to sea. The disadvantage, of course, is that you are not actually on the beach but the five minute walk for your swim is a small price to pay for the great vantage point.
English Harbour and Falmouth are a 5 minute drive or just a short water-taxi ride away. They are large enough to have an interesting variety of bars and restaurants but not so big as to loose the village feel. So, unless you are looking for total isolation or for the "all inclusive" hotel compound Blue Moon is definitely for you.
One tiny little request from an Englishman, can we have an electric kettle next time please? Tea really needs boiling water!!
Many thanks to Shonnie who is a wonderful owner/manager. She has that great trick of knowing when you need something and when to leave you alone. Also, her garden, that extends right up to the villa, is an absolute delight. I am sure we will return.
As the snow piles up in Boston, my husband and I are packing our bags
for our third trip to Blue Moon Antigua. For the past two years, we
have had such fun that we are restless with anticipation of the warm
weather and reception that we will receive from Blue Moon owners,
Shonnie and Michael.
The rental units are totally lovely. They are furnished with simple
eloquence that includes everything from nice dishes, fluffy towels, good
furniture to local flowers. The unit is spotless. I particularly like to
take a shower under the blue sky, surrounded with the privacy of walls.
We generally take our morning coffee on the veranda, watching the
sailing ships come and go. The outside table is also a good spot for
lunch, if we are not off on an adventure.
Antiqua has a number of hidden treasures that are fun to explore. We like to go into the capital at least once on each trip. The cathedral is a special place and well worth the visit. We also like to walk around the farmers' market, talking about the various fruits and vegetables with the local sellers. We always buy both fruit and vegetables since it is fun to try the local foods. My husband, who is a "foodie," is particularly excited about getting back to the market and buying bags of passion fruit to make his version of "granita."
There is a lovely beach a five-minute walk from Blue Moon. We walk down
a gentle hill, across a grassy yard, and onto the sandy beach. What
luxury! While we share the beach with others, it is not the least bit
crowded. The water is perfect for swimming any time of day. We often go two
times per day, since it is such an easy walk to-and-from the beach to
I also like to get a massage when I go on vacation. Shonnie knows the island and the various providers and her recommendations have been perfect. Just tell her how you like to pamper yourself and she'll recommend the right kind of spa or person.
Most importantly, however, as we look forward to our trip, it is our time visiting with our friends that make our trips to Antiqua so special. We have had the good fortune to rent one unit as our friends rent the other unit at Blue Moon. This combination of friends and one's own space have made our trips perfect, as we do our own thing during the day and gather on the veranda for drinks, food, and friendship. For us, we have found the perfect vacation.
My husband and I visited Antigua for a week in June for our honeymoon. We stayed at the Blue Moon in one of the villas. Upon arrival, we instantly felt at home and were thrilled with the villa as well as the stunning view of the English Harbour. We had seen pictures, but they really don't do this place justice. The villa was spacious and comfortable. The kitchen had everything we needed including a coffee maker, ice maker, and a little cooler to pack for days at the beach. We opened the fridge and were delighted to find a bottle of champagne! (which we drank in the jacuzzi while watching an amazing sunset). The bed was very comfortable, the bathroom and closet spacious, and the outdoor shower was beautiful and refreshing. Our favorite part of the villa, however, had to be the amazing terrace. It is quite large, holding a few lounge chairs and tables, and a large table with many chairs. We spent every morning lounging and drinking coffee here while looking out over the harbour and the spectacular view. We could have been happy to spend our entire time in Antigua there in the villa. We found that there was so much to see and do just outside our door! Joined by our new friend, Chloe (the sweetest dog), we hiked the many trails around Blue Moon, sunbathed and snorkeled on the beach just a short walk from the villa, and even paddled kayaks through the harbor to Nelson's Dockyard.(Make sure to hike up to Shirley's Heights on Sunday evening for a great barbeque and party! Local bands and plenty of rum punches to go around.) Our honeymoon was everything we hoped for and much more. Our hosts Shonnie and Michael made sure of that! They are incredible people and are extremely knowledgeable about the island. They made sure our time there was perfect, from recommending the best restaurants, to arranging day trips, to giving us snorkeling tips, and everything in between. We hope to return to Antigua someday soon, and would only consider staying at the Blue Moon Villas.
